This is one of those projects I have been wanting to do for a while. And it will take a while to get all the footage converted from the VHS tape to this channel
My uncle was a yellow shirt on the Teddy and the Coral Sea. I went on a Independence Day cruise on both. It was the 43 last in 88 or 89 I think. Super cool to see launches and traps when you’re like 9 years old.
You recorded much better than I did. I was on a cruiser and watched the air show put on by the Roosevelt in 97 or around then. My tape is screwed up but I have two pretty good shots of the supersonic flyby.
Was there any sort of barrier there? I can't imagine what would happen if the F-14 had a problem on landing and made a veer off to the right with all the families in the path. :-/ Nice video, though! I always wonder why video on carriers has the occasional buzz and distortions appear.
Dang I don’t see this ever happening with civilians on the deck today but I really wouldn’t know either. Regardless people today are lawsuit happy babies and I miss the good ol’ days.
I have the up-most respect for our military.. . and know its not really "their" decision, but more the decisions of the higher ups... but Carrier ops is the most dangerous environment and to have young people (children in some cases) standing feet from aircraft landing on a deck of carrier is not only ridiculous, but down right dangerous. If something goes wrong and there is a crash on deck, the ramifications of a tragedy like that would be horrific and a huge public scandal.
It's a dangerous environment for anyone not assigned to the flight deck. That's why the deck has any other Aircraft far from the landing area and spectators are way back from the foul line. Squadron Pilots are the most experienced. No more dangerous than any shore based air show. All and all its the safest that it can be made....Speaking from years on deck for flight operations.
I worked during that dependent cruise I was in VF-84 during that time.

Gutsiest move I ever saw.
You know, in my Squadron - which happened to be 84, any line from that Top Gun movie would result in some really demeaning punishment.
