They're pretty birds but a curlew screaming next to your window at 4 in the morning is not how you want to wake up.

I used to live in the bush, sometimes it's even creepier when you can hear it far in the distance, sounds like someone screaming in the middle of the woods.

lol yep, every morning, evening and night. It seemed a little lost and demented though like it kept trying to call out for its baby, not his friends as it was a loner. Felt really sorry for it, was going on for like 6 months

I love their call, I used to go to sleep to it as a kid. it sounded like mournful children lamenting their fate, & it lulled me to sleep.

What a voice this bird has! So tame too. This bird is also in America and on Indian beaches. As a kid growing up in India, we took summer vacations on the beach. The curlew's song arced through the sky on long sultry afternoons dividing the day in half. I always found it mesmerizing and haunting. I heard it again in America. I had to identify the bird. They have amazing voices, so rich and melodious! Thank you for posting, I really enjoyed this!

Living in the colder end of Australai, I don't have to be woken by that at 4am. Actually, I'm a night shifter, so I'm awake any way. I'd get used to it after a while. Much better than a couple of tom cats fighting. Sounds like a tame version of an Aztec Death Whistle.
