Frankly speaking, "I need to think about this" is actually an admirable view. As humans we will not always be right in our lives, so it always surprises me when someone is willing to admit they don't have an answer on the spot and they need to think about it.

First of all: The "our people" were Ukrainian citizens. In December 1991 there was referendum in Ukraine and 76% of all inhabitants of Luhanskaya und Donetzkaya Oblast voted for independence from Soviet Russia. So "our people" were a minority.

It is the decision of the Russian people, and Putin is constantly terrified of a "color revolution". That's why the Russian economy is such a touchy subject in Russia. It's also why Russia vastly increased salaries for military recruits to avoid a major mobilization. Paradoxically, so-called "dictatorships" have to worry far more about public-opinion than so-called "democracies". The reality is, almost everyone in Russia supports the war. The ones who oppose it are liberals/leftists in big cities(especially women). They're the same leftist types that live in New York and Los Angeles.

To be quite honest, the Third Reich's invasion of Poland was negotiated and planned in detail, and carried out jointly with the USSR. *Stalin and Hitler began WWII together, as de facto allies* for the first two years. After Germany's defeat, the Germans (at least those living in the sectors administered by the Western Allies) went through some serious reckoning, including arguments, confessions and soul-searching within families. Nothing of the sort ever took place in Russia. Stalin's policies led to the deaths of more Russians (not to mention the non-Russians!) than at any other point in Russian history, yet even today most Russians view him as one of their greatest leaders. Hence the repeated obsession with militarist imperialism and brutal authoritarianism. Hence the grotesqueness of a proud KGB apparatchik, poisoner and war criminal masquerading as the defender of Christendom...

If the Russian federation breaks up, who is to say that any other stronger country won't try and take advantage of it by annexing those broken states? That's the risk you take when you demand independence but don't have the resources to maintain it. Many younger people seem to know better, from what I have seen as they know how to use a vpn to access outside information and they are not as gullible. I think some of this is built-in to the society there, too, as for ages, they were basically lied to / told what to do / think under communist rule. The older generation, especially are used to this and some actually miss it. Of course, that can get passed down to their children, etc.

not entirely true. European countries have found other suppliers (Norway, Algerie, Kazakhstan and others), they can import processed petroleum products, but at the market price, so nothing changes for buyers, but the raw product is paid to Russia with a price cap.
PS: India pays in rupees and not in dollars or rubles, this implies that the money collected in India must be spent in India.
      "Don't tell anyone" 🤫:
On May 2, for the first time in 24 years, Gazprom declared the 2023 budget in the red for 6.8 billion dollars - against profits of 21 billion dollars in 2022 - due to the collapse of exports to the European Union (from 64 to 28 Gm3), as well as prices (from over 300 to about 30 €/MWh).
As a result, in 2024, investments will amount to 17.8 billion dollars (-20% compared to the previous year) and there will be no distribution of dividends.
