I’m at mechanic in a glass container factory, our production machines use them a lot to actuate cartridge valves. Learned a trick for testing them when you think you may have a solenoid going out. Hold a screwdriver to the stem and see if it magnetizes when the solenoid powers on if it doesn’t the solenoid is bad

Oddly enough solenoid valves are used in most microwave and radio/TV broadcast systems. (!) The transmission lines between the transmitter and antenna on the tower have to be pressurized with dry air, as condensation in the lines will cause all sorts of problems. Corrosion, radio interference and complete burnout of the transmitter or melting the line itself etc.
There's a dehydrator unit at the base of the tower which has an air compressor and various drying mechanisms. Coalescing filters, desiccant chambers, membranes etc. The solenoids are used in different designs to facilitate direct purging of the separated water, or to switch desiccant chambers from drying mode to purging mode as necessary.
And yes, I work on these systems, mostly doing repairs of the dehydrator assemblies. When I briefly describe what I do to folks who aren't in the industry, they kind of boggle at the thought of air compressors and such being part of radio systems. I get a kick out of that. :)

It would have been great to see automated irrigation systems included in this video as they are large consumer of solenoid valves and completely dependent on their use.

Definitely a great explanation into how the valve works. In the automotive there are several control valves, one being the purge valve which is part of the fuel tank evaporation system. That system is one of the emissions control systems.

This actually does not explain, why solenoid valves are used.
It only explains why remote controllable valves are used.
Could be also a stepper motor which opens/closes valves.

Hello engineer manset, i put 240 V AC on a solenoid valve for diesel (between diesel pump and burner). The solenoid valve said 24 V AC, did i break it?

You obviously did, i mean not the valve itself but the electronics were probably fried

Ya I can all but guarantee that the magnet is fried the valve itself should be fine though.

Also if the coil is removed from the stem and is left energised it will eventually burn out.
