Restoration of an old "Valve Lapper" tool

- This hand crank valve lapping tool was first introduced in the early 1900s by Albertson & Co. I found this one calling to me at an antique store about ten years ago. Finally, I've gotten around to restoring it and adding a modern suction cup so I can use it to repair modern valves. A few parts ended up getting replaced with new shop-made pieces as well as having to make a few missing parts.
I love fixing old tools. All of my restorations are done on as-found objects. We do not artificially age objects just to restore them. If you have an old object you'd like me to restore here on the channel, just send me an e-mail at Zsartell@comcast.net with some pictures and any history you know of and we'll talk.

Wonderful, I'm over 65 and first time seeing one like this, hats off to you, viewer from trinidad
Thank you! Glad you stopped by 😉
Great video and professional work
Thanks a ton!
Nicely done. I have my late fathers old valve lapper. I've been tossing around the idea of restoring it.
Thank you! That was a challenging one for sure. You definitely should!
It's not just having the right tools, it's knowing how to use them, great job!!!
Thanks for watching!
That is amazing how you restored the valve lapping machine. Equally amazing is how you made some new parts for it and how you electroplated the steel parts with copper and nickel. It looks much better and it works like a charm too. Excellent work.
Thanks! This one ended up being more of a handful than I had originally expected, but it turned out good in the end.
Your resoration level is amazing.

Thanks a ton! There's more on the way
At first I didn't understand what this tool was for, now I know its uses
Thanks for stopping by!
Absolutely beautiful work! I learned so many little tips and tricks in this one video, that’s it’s inspired me to take on the restoration of a couple old antique tools I’ve had for years, one of which is an old antique “James Swan & Co. / Connecticut” beam drill as used in the 1800’s in timber frame construction of homes and barns. Thank you so much for taking the time to shoot, edit, and publish this video for the benefit of all. Great work and much appreciated. Thank you. Subscribed today by the way. 👍
Glad to hear it! Thanks! Good luck with your restorations. Reviving the past is very rewarding.
Nice work, I love to watch this kind of videos ❤❤
Thanks a ton! I'm working on getting more out soon
Really good work and i like that you show it in action
Thanks for watching!
Fantastic work on this little but extremely handsome tool. I have done a lot of valves work and have always missed a tool like this! Thanks a lot for restoring and preserving this tool 👍😎🇩🇪
Thank you!
Great job! I look forward to the next project!
Thanks! There's lots more in the works.
Two of my favorite processes, the blast cabinet and powder coating.
I just got these both setup in my shop over the last year. I don't know how I ever managed without them!
¡Óptima herramienta! Óptimo trabajo. Es útil para talleres
Thanks!
Beautiful restoration and very well produced video 👌
Thank you!
Amazingly, someone goes for the JB Weld and uses a reasonable amount. Most youtube restorers would gloop the entire thing in a thick coat and then spend days sanding it off.
Yeah, it didn't need that much. I feel like it needed to be cleaned up, not absolutely perfect. In the end it was a ton better than when it was new. Thanks for watching!
Nice project. Very good editing and descriptions. Subscribed.
Thanks! This was a fun one. More is in the way.
Nice job, I got a few of those valve gappers at home
Thanks! They're neat little tools.
Very good job! Liked and subscribed.
Thanks a ton!
클레식한 수리공구네요ㅎ
멋집니다!
Thanks!
Bardzo porządnie i fachowo jest to odrestaurowane cacko Pozdrawiam serdecznie twórcy tego filmu. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you!
Great job!!
Thank you!
Well done 👍👍
Thank you!
I remember these. Now I just use my battery drill on slow and lift it a lot. Works perfectly. The reciprocating movement doesn’t make the seal any better.
You're probably right, but I suppose it doesn't hurt either. I've also often just chucked the stem of the valve in a battery powered drill and taken it easy, but I suppose now I can be fancy 🤣
No it's A old-school valve lapper tool for vehicles and small engines from the old Days of course.
It's a pretty neat old tool. One of my favorites.
Hard work
Thanks!
I think the random hold mite have been an oiling point
That's a reasonable guess. Others I have come across had a handle there.
Гарна реставрація,
Та й річ корисна для протирання клапанів .
Я звернув увагу що ви любите ретро станки та ручний інструмент. В цих їнструнтах є душа .
Привіт з України !
Thanks! Yeah, I have a love for old hand tools. Most people don't give them enough credit.
Good work, probably antimony
Thanks!

I suppose the upper wooden handle,must be as a “T” handle .
I found it sort of unnecessary, but I do feel like it balances it out a bit.
From the general appearance, I want to say it's cast zinc? I'm just taking a guess, though.
Yup, might just be zinc! Thanks!
Just wondering did you consider brass ferrules for the wooden handles to prevent future wood splitting, great video BTW 😀
I had considered that, but I really think that would have been overkill. Thanks for watching!
@@Fix-N-Stuff indeed, gilding the lily 😀
posphate acid?
I used hydrochloric acid to give the parts a light etch before plating
That was probably made out of ductile cast-iron.
This was my guess. Would that also be called gray iron?
Yes I believe so. It machines really easy and if you file or sand it, you can taste the metal in the air, if that makes sense. kind of like when you’re sanding something that’s rusted you get that rust taste. Old cast-iron has its own taste as well.

Thanks for watching!
Kya yah item India mein Nahin mil Sakta hai sar yadi mil sakta hai to bataen kahan mil sakta hai sar mujhe bhi yah chahie 🌺👏 mujhe ise mini drill machine banana hai
I'm not sure if it is locally found in India, but I would try eBay and have one shipped.
perhaps the metal is cast iron
I think you're right, or perhaps what they call "gray" iron?
❤❤❤😂
Thanks for watching!
Start the video until you hear the cow
Thanks for watching!
😂 cow
She's always yelling at me 🤣
интересная но бестолковая фиговина.
Well, thanks for watching!
Stupid bullshit? That’s a little uncalled for. It would be quite a handy tool for someone who repairs vintage small engines (like the 70 year old rototiller that I rebuilt last year). It’s definitely an improvement over using one of the newer hand-powered suction cup loppers (like the plastic stick that he removed the suction cup from in the video).
