    Been searching review after review to see if this laser would work for cosplay, FINALLY you said exactly what I needed "this can also cut through 11mm foam floor tile". PERFECT. You win youtube for today and I definitely need this laser, especially for the price. Maybe I'll have less issues than with my 3D printer.
    Creating the enclosure is going to be harder than using the laser I think.

    • @isaac879
      @isaac879  4 роки тому +1

      I'm glad you found this helpful! Originally when i tried cutting through the foam it took about 10 passes! However I recently added a 3d printed air assist to it and it now cuts cleanly through it 4 passes! I would definitely suggest making an enclosure with good fume extraction too.

    • @user-vl4zi9vl8g

      @@beckys4940 I ended up getting this and it works great for cutting foam pieces while I work on other parts of the costume. I actually am fairly happy with my purchase. Getting it set up correctly is a pain and varies from software to software. Once you get things dialed in... you really can shoot productivity up. Barging pieces together while the next few pieces are being cut. Definitely stick a fan near it to blow fumes away and DEFINITELY make sure everyone in the room has eye protection. I legit put a cardboard box around mine with hole for the fan until I can build a real enclosure.

    Is feed rate and multiple passes the only burn depth control you have or can you vary the intensity of the laser?
    Thanks,

    • @isaac879

      Thank you! I don't think it would be practical to cut 1/8" woods with it unfortunately. I have seen a few videos of people cutting 3mm balsa wood but I think any harder woods would require too many passes to be practical.

    One piece of feedback, on laptop speakers, you're voice is a bit unintelligble. The issue sounds like the music is a bit louder than it should be, but also your voice may benefit from a little EQ to pull out some of the low frequency content.

    hi isaac what process you used for the lastly TOKEN thing and what was the material metal or SS

    • @isaac879
      @isaac879  6 років тому +1

      the token was made out of galvanised steel. To create it, I used a matte black spray paint on the metal then etched it with the laser exposing some of the areas. I then used electroetching in slat water which removes the exposed meta. To electroetch it, the token must be the anode at +5V and I just used some scrap metal as the cathode. This video shows the process of electroetching: ua-cam.com/video/ncWXVOzNGbA/v-deo.html

    A 10k resistor between + and - on the TTL control signal line should sort out the initial laser power-on issue. At least, it does when using a Ramps board and Marlin. (This will also depend which laser control board you have and if you're using TTL)

    • @isaac879

    Hi, great video. Planning och buying the same machine but wondering if the 5000 mw is worth the extra cash? I thought 2500 mw would not cut through materials. Which one would you recommend?

    • @isaac879
      @isaac879  6 років тому +1

      Thanks! I haven't had much experience with any other laser but from what I know 5000mW isn't really able to do much more than the 2500mW. It will be able to engrave and cut slightly faster and deeper but not by much. When I bought mine it was about £150 and the 5000mW was around £300 so really didn't seem worth the extra cost for so little benefit. I wouldn't really advice this machine for cutting unless it is cardboard or a thin material less than 2-3mm even then it takes several passes. If you want to cut anything more substantial then I would suggest getting a CO2 laser.
      I hope this helps!

  • @ritvarsallin
    @ritvarsallin 5 років тому

    Hi, as i know, that this laser can't or is not sugested to work without stoping after 30min, so my question is 1) how long it took for you to engrave that round labyrinth in the glass? I am just looking forward to manage better my continuous work with that laser. 3) Other suggestions? 2)And did you had some improvements for your box, regarding to cooling all that laser or system, did you touched with the hands which parts is hot after work (don't forget to switch off in case you will test it :) ) I would be very very appreciated to get some answers. Thank you, its great video.

    • @isaac879
      @isaac879  5 років тому

      With the 2500mW laser the cooling should be adequate to run it continuously. I have done several engravings that too hours with no problems. The laser module gets slightly warm to the touch after about 10 minutes but then doesn't get any hotter.
      The vents and fan position in my box weren't very good because the side of the engraver machine partially block airflow over the work piece. I would probably suggest changing the vents to the front and back rather than sides.
      I hope this answers your questions and helps.

    Hi Isaac. I am looking at buying the same piece of kit but would like to know if your laser is able to "cut" 3mm thick balsa (parts for RC plane... cutting speed or number of passes is no issue to me.)

    • @isaac879
      @isaac879  6 років тому +2

      Hi Richard, I haven't got any balsa wood to test and try to cut at the moment but I believe it would be able to with enough passes. I have cut 3mm acrylic with it so imagine balsa should work too. Originally where doing research before buying my laser I found this video which apparently shows a laser of the same power cutting 3mm balsa: ua-cam.com/video/e2zY00KaERQ/v-deo.html

    • @isaac879
      @isaac879  6 років тому

      Thanks! I would strongly suggest testing the settings on a scrap piece of the material you want to engrave first as each material is slightly different. These are some of the settings I used so hopefully will be a good starting point. I'm using the EleksMasker software and have the X and Y axis acceleration set to 1000. For relatively soft woods I have been doing 1 pass at 200/1000 power and 600mm/min. For harder woods 450/1000 and 600mm/min. I did my leather wallet at 180/1000 power and 650mm/min. Glass with the black marker was engraved at 1000/1000 power and 700mm/min. Etching black paint off metal was done at 1000/1000 power at 1100mm/min. Cutting card took 2 passes at 1000/1000 power at 700mm/min.

    • @isaac879
      @isaac879  6 років тому

      I've actually just upgraded changed the firmware and software I'm using with it to GRBL and LaserWeb4. One of the issues with EleksMaker software is that it wouldn't allow you to perform an engrave and cut. When I made some leather keyrings, I had to cut it out first then alight the engrave and do that separately. With LaserWeb it allows you to perform both in the same operation.

      The fans were just standard 120mm pc fans. I believe this is the one: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120mm-x-25mm-12V-2Pin-Sleeve-Bearing-Cooling-Fan-for-Computer-Case-PK/322552096253?epid=1369074037&hash=item4b199a65fd:g:RAEAAOSwwvZZPqQL
      I used 100mm (4") pvc ducting: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FLEXIBLE-PVC-DUCT-DUCTING-4-100MM-HOSE-PIPE-PER-METER/283028718860?epid=1190945491&hash=item41e5d3850c:g:~B4AAMXQlgtSwUQl&frcectupt=true
      Here is he 3D model I made of the adaptor from the fan to ducting: www.thingiverse.com/thing:2699237

    Hello mate, great video!!! Can you engrave some acrylic please? I am looking to get one of these to engrave glass and acrylic, but mostly acrylic. cheers

    • @isaac879
      @isaac879  6 років тому

      Thank you! Unfortunately I have taken the laser module out of my engraver for my laser gun project so i can't engrave anything else just yet. I did do some testing with clear acrylic before though. Just like with glass if you use black marker on the surface then you can engrave it but I found it didn't work as well as glass for refracting the light of my display stand.

    Can it engrave anodised aluminium?

    • @geekguidance3753
      @geekguidance3753 5 років тому

      It can remove the anodized coating for metals. You can then use chemicals to actually etch the metal if desired

      @isaac879  4 роки тому +1

      No. You would probably need a 40+W CO2 laser to cut it.

    Can we upgrade it to 7w or 15 w..doesnt changing software

    • @isaac879
      @isaac879  4 роки тому +1

      It shouldn't change the software but the different power laser modules are often different sizes so check the mounting bracket size/hope positions.
