A general overview of the Book of 1 Samuel records the transition in Israel from the period when they were lead and ruled by judges, to the monarchy of successive kings. This change in Israel's national life revolved mainly around three men:
1) Samuel, a prophet and the last of the great judges
2) Saul, Israel's first inaugural king
3) David, Israel's second king
The theme of this book, similar to other historical writings in the Old Testament, is that faithfulness and obedience to God brings prosperity, while unfaithfulness and disobedience leads to disaster.
The establishment of the monarchy was met with some resistance, since the Lord Himself was regarded as the real king of Israel. Nevertheless, in response to the people's desire to be like the nations that surrounded them, they requested that the Lord chose a human king for them. In granting their request, a requirement was that both the king and the people of Israel would continually live under the sovereignty and judgement of God, under Who's laws the rights of all people, rich and poor alike, were to be maintained.
