People don't realize how epic the old testament really is. Folks think that 'Game of Thrones' is amazing, but it doesn't compare to the stories in the Bible. When I was twenty, I had a boring night job as tech support (1997) and as a Christian, I decided to actually read the Bible from start to finish instead of just picking scriptures like common Bible studies. I made it all the way to Chronicles (which actually is rather far) and OMG... You would be so amazed how good the stories in the Bible really are. Samuel is one of my favorite historic people (who passed the torch to Nathan). I was actually upset that Sunday school never told me about Jacob, Issac, Joseph, etc... as a kid. They made it sound like the Bible was a bunch of old desert stories, but it really is the opposite. Did you know that David didn't just kill Goliath but also was attacked by Goliath's brother who was also a giant? Did you know that Saul was actually a really good king up until his latter years? I can not express enough how enjoyable actually reading the Bible really is. Even if you don't have faith, I still suggest you read it. I'm a movie nerd and nothing I've seen on film compares. Well, I do give credit to the old 'Ten Commandments' movie (which is the best film in my opinion with the best poetic acting), but the movie got allot of things very wrong. Ok.. I have to end this before this comment reaches the size of a novelette. lol..

Notice how Israel's downfall occurred the same day some fool decided to say: "Let's have a king like the other nations do and have him lead us", this was basically the same as saying: "God we don't need you anymore, go away". When you choose human leadership over God's leadership this is what happens. Ever since then the Israelites couldn't get on their feet.

I'm not sure what you are suggesting they fell from... the time and rule of the Judges?
There are actually provisions in Deuteronomy for how a king should rule (suggesting a human king WAS part of God's plan for Israel) and in Judges the cause of Israel's heinous behavior was because they didn't have a king, and were all doing what was right in their own eyes. I think the video shows that their motives were wrong, as you say, but not that a king, in and of itself, was a bad thing.
Does that make sense?

Ruling in and if itself is not a rejection of God. David was called to lead, and I don't see it as a plan
B (according to God's stated plan for humanity in Genesis 2)
@Baribefe Kpurubu absolutley on ruling the world and not each other.
If we want to talk about plan A or B, I guess we can disagree on foreknowledge and predestination type issues. Plan A was given in Genesis 2. With his foreknowledge though, God knew giving his creation rule there was the potential (certainty?) that they would rebel. Thus the rescue plan was all God's plan, including the means (Davidic Covenant) to complete it.
I don't want to read Samuel's lament about Israel's request for a king as being solely about having a king. Scripture as a whole shows kingship through a son of man as Gods plan from the beginning. The only place I can think of suggesting that a king was not part of the plan is where Samuel is told "They are rejecting me, not you". Implicit here is that God chose Samuel as their leader at that time, not that no other future leaders would be chosen, nor that those future leaders would remain in the mode of Judge/prophets rather than king's.
Whichever leader, or leadership style, God needs to be ultimate king. Thanks for your thoughts.

A couple of weeks ago, I decided I would read the entire Bible cover to cover, because I never had. I just finished 1st Samuel. I’m glad these videos exist because they help put it all together mentally.
Always felt this was an amazing book. Watching David trust God and continue to love Saul despite his wanting to kill him.
Even when Abishai was next to David telling him to let him kill Saul for him , David declined! Lesson: Don't listen to the opinion of others telling you what God's will for YOU is. Have faith and lean on God!

All those outcomes in Deuteronomy 28 are directed at the actual descendants of Israel.
The Bible couldn't be more clear that the Israelites were descended from the 12 sons of Jacob- who is one of the sons of Isaac, who is the promised son of Abraham- who descended from the patriarch Shem. Blacks are not of Shem.... of course throughout the millennia the Israelites mixed with some blacks, but they also mixed with asians and whites- most of them are pale skinned..
You are not an Israelite and you have no evidence to prove that you are- much less entire people groups that have no connection whatever with the chosen people.

I am Muslim, living in the UK and reading the entire Quran now. I want to understand and know other Abrahamic religions closely too. I wanted to read the Bible and the Old Testament, but struggled to find comprehensive versions. I just wanted to read the original texts. Then, I came across these video series and they are helping me a lot to understand the bullet points and compare the holy books. For example, Prophet Moses has a huge part in the Quran too.
As a Muslim, I wanted to thank you. I hope a similar one for the Quran will be made soon.

@@thomasmartin8100 dear Thomas, Muslims believe and love Jesus, Moses, and all the other prophets before them. And the last one of course, Muhammad. Quran mentions the previous books too which revealed to Jesus and Moses and some other short scripts revealed to some other previous prophets. Some parts of these holy books unfortunately were changed, thats why always people needed new prophets and new books. This is a line starting from Adam till Muhammad. So, being a Muslim means, bearing witness that there is no God but Allah, and bearing witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God. In a comprehensive way. God is one, religion is one, and all prophets are His messengers.

Salaam. The most common misunderstanding of Muslims is that Christians worship three gods (ash-shirk) but of course we do not. The trinity is like three personalities of one God. There are numerous instances starting in Genesis where Jesus reveals himself to be God. How can the Lord physically walk with Adam and Eve in the garden, for one thing? I hope your eyes are opened and know that his return is imminent.

I read the Bible cover to cover two times already and currently working through my third round. I learn something new every time I read it! The Bible also gives answer to my current circumstances; it’s truly the living word of God.
The impression I got about Saul is that he was literally insane as a king(at least at some point). He seemed to be pretty repentant(even if he lost his mind afterward) and humbled when David showed him that he(David) had his life in his hands and spared him(twice).
I finished 1st Samuel. I found it interesting, sad, pretty brutal, but despite that pretty exciting(or at least I was wanting to find out what happens next).
I also know and keep in mind that the biblical stories are not meant to provide perfect role-models/paragons for us, they are often flawed and sinful, even especially sinful. Even the Bible itself acknowledges that. We ought to be careful to avoid the argument from silence. That is not to say that we should be too judgmental of them. That is actually one of the things I found interesting, many of the biblical characters/"heroes"(if they can be called that) are simultaneously highly virtuous and highly viscous(having strong or many vices). Saul and David are good examples.
The story of Saul is pretty sad, it appears that he started out as a relatively virtuous guy but lost his mind when he was king. Even though he was insane and was trying to kill David out of envy and paranoia multiple times, he repented multiple times when David proved to him that he could have killed Saul, Saul had the guts and the virtue to admit(to himself, to God, to David, and to anyone else present) that he was in the wrong and had done evil and considered David the better man, rather than hiding in denial or trying to save face.
So far in the story, David reminds me of Saul's beginning and demonstrates virtue like his personal loyalty to people(even to Saul as Saul was repeatably trying to find and kill David and driving him into hiding), confidence in God(in the story of Goliath and other places), humility, and repentance(like Saul demonstrated at times). David also seems to have been very brutal at times, unforgivably so by most modern standards, but it is difficult for me to condemn him for too long since he seems to have been sincere about being a good man insofar as he(in his environment) knew how to be and also because he was willing to change when it was shown to him that he was in the wrong. I think that if David was around in the time of the ministry of Jesus, he might have been one of the least offended by Jesus, but if I were in that time, I might have been a pharisee. I condemn David at times out of unrighteous indignation, but I think he had a good heart despite his extreme problems(I doubt I would have done better than him if I were raised in the culture).
Reading about David and the psalms of David is a very humbling experience for me. It reminds me how unjustly judgmental I can be if I am tempted to feel so-called "righteous indignation". I don't beat myself up over my past, but I do not consider myself to have the right to condemn others or to be unforgiving or to look down on anyone on earth. Condemnation of others is a burden that I don't want anyway. Unforgiveness and pride suck!
I still don't know what my response as a christian should be to the brutality in the Old Testament. I agree with this from George MacDonald...
"(I "translated" some of the old pronouns like "thee" and "thy")Let no one persuade you that there is in him a little darkness, because of something he has said which his creature interprets into darkness. The interpretation is the work of the enemy--a handful of tares of darkness sown in the light. Neither let your cowardly conscience receive any word as light because another calls it light, while it looks to you dark. Say either the thing is not what it seems, or God never said or did it. But, of all evils, to misinterpret what God does, and then say the thing as interpreted must be right because God does it, is of the devil. Do not try to believe anything that affects you as darkness. Even if you mistake and refuse something true thereby, you wilt do less wrong to Christ by such a refusal than you would by accepting as his what you can only see as darkness. It is impossible you are seeing a true, a real thing--seeing it as it is, I mean--if it looks to you to be darkness. But let your words be few, lest you say with your tongue what you will afterward repent with your heart." - George MacDonald in his Unspoken Sermon "Light" (note that I don't represent George MacDonald so if I am mistaken about the following, it is not his fault and his sermons like "Justice" and "Light" helped my faith and many others like CS Lewis.)
That being said, I don't know how to interpret if God didn't command those things. Could the prophets have misused their reputation as prophets and told people to do things that God did not truly command, telling them the true commands of God some of the time but false commands at other times(intentionally or not)? Often, the Bible does not directly say that God commanded people to do a given thing, but that a prophet claimed "This is what God commands..." or so on. That may be going too far plus I am hesitant to believe that since I don't want to risk slandering anyone but I am at least confident at that I ought to follow George MacDonald's advice and not accept something that contradicts my God-given conscience.
I am not fully comfortable with concluding that all the unpleasant things attributed to God, are completely false since God is omniscient and we know he loves everyone, but God understands the big picture better than anyone(of course many humans who would resort to killing for "big picture reasons" are neither loving nor omniscient and don't think that I condone that). I believe that his discipline can seem extreme but only when the resulting positive growth/goodness is extreme since he never disciplines in vain. I don't think he throws anyone under the bus or sacrifices unwilling people for others or that he loved the Israelites more than anyone else. His incarnation is proof to me that he loves everyone and that he would rather sacrifice himself than someone else. I have been able to see past the unpleasant parts more where they don't throw off the whole story for me. That is not to say I whitewash them. My current attitude when reading the OT is a sort of agnosticism when that comes up(not of God's existence but whether God really did those things for some loving reason that has not been revealed to me or whether it is misattributed to him).

In my church, there seems to be a consensus that the Old Testament is barbaric and did not age as well as the New Testament. Since I started reading the Bible, though, I have found that to be completely false. The stories and people of the Old Testament are fascinating and very informative.
Samuel is my favorite part of Old Testament. Samuel is like an epic poetry. Samuel is perfectly equipped with the essentials of epic poetry.

This is my first time studying the Bible ( I knew some stories but never how deep they were) and I am so amazed by Gods grace and faithfulness and how fair he is, I love watching these videos right after my Bible story to make sure I didn't miss anything!!

I've been a recent converted Christian after not accepting god for much of my time as a child and teenage years, I have been reading the bible cover to cover and am just coming to the end of first samual. These videos have really helped me understand the message in the bible and I am hoping to be baptised once I finish reading the bible. So glad you guys referred to the Saul/David dichotomy as character studies.
I'm still fascinated by the difference between the two anointed men. Both sin grievously, but David repents after Nathan rebukes him (Psalm 51, 2 Samuel 12:16), while Saul doesn't even after Samuel rebukes him (1 Samuel 28:6-25).
I know this is 3 years later, but I found out that Saul actually does repent, he tells Samuel to go with him to worship God and gets so desperate for forgiveness that he tears off a piece of Samuel’s robe. Instead of true repentance though (a complete turn around) he doesn’t accept David as king unlike his own son Jonathan, who knew that David would be king instead of it being him, being the son of the king. Instead of giving up his throne, it’s like he desperately fights for it out of jealousy, but out of his jealousy, God let’s Saul get worse and worse so David can learn what not to be like. Kinda reminds me how God let Pharoah’s heart harden more and more agaisnt Moses. They chose to be that way so God was still going to use them for good.
Remember after Samuel told Saul that the Lord was not pleased that he didnt kill the King Agag . He said he had sinned then he killed King Agag, 1 Samuel 15: 28-32

As an open minded 29 year old Christian, I experience many curiosities in regards to the beautiful and confusing relationship between David and Saul's son Johnathan, and was quite surprised it was never mentioned in this video. Johnathon aids in David's survival. Johnathan protects David, unconditionally. Some of Saul's anger towards David is in relation to his son's relationship with David. The 2 young men "became one in spirit" with each other, they made covenants and oaths between each other, many times, with the Lord as their witness. Oaths/Covenants they made to carry on between their descendants. Their love for each other is inspiring, uplifting, and perhaps a little "progressive". What say you on this overlooked story line? I ask not in negativity, but pure curiosity. It is a major theme in the book of Samuel. I come to your website, your videos and your podcasts when I am in need of the knowledge and understanding that churches don't/won't provide. I am genuinely thankful for what you all do at The Bible Project and will soon be a donor. The relationship between David and Johnathon and needs to be addressed in this modern world, full of modern Christians. There needs to be some understanding. Please help. Thank you.
Hello, this is from my understand.. the modern church hardly touch on David and Jonathan because people who wont know about the bible and the entire scenario would use that to support their claim on being gay..
Not hate here please..i love everyone as they are but yup they would have use it but i think we should see more than that. The part where David and Jon friendship went over sexual desire and needs. Their friendship is so pure to a point where they just basically love each other without feeling sexual. They are willing to give up their life for each other and i can say it is the kind of friendship that God want us to have with him.
Jesus also said that there will be a friend who would be closer than a brother. I thank God that i have a friend who knows me entirely in and out and vice versa.
To be able to know, care and love someone fully for who they are is truly a joy.

@@aaronlim5595 I think that sadly that's the problem. The modern world won't accept that two men would love each other unconditionally in a non-sexual way. They would demand it be gay to satisfy their own insecurities even though that's not the case. It's a depressing commentary on society in general because there's a decided lack of these kinds of friendships/brotherhoods that needs to be shown. People don't know how to socialize anymore and need to see healthy relationships.
Jonathan dan David, the relationship IS NOT physical, it is soul. Do you know that the bible never mentioned about the relationship between them is physical. It is like when you have a very closed friend, and you like to chat with him/ her but NOT HAVE the physical attraction!!! It is VERY DIFFERENT with the gay community, because they have the physical relationship and attraction
I am a childrens pastor and I teach the story of David and Jonathan every year at least once. I talk to the kids about faithfulness in friendship and what a true friend looks like in good times and hard times. Kids need to know what a real friend is. The story of David and Jonathan is a excellent example of that. Maybe some churches don’t cover it but I do and I think it’s really important. Kids respond very well to this story. And no I don’t think it needs to be sexualized at all.

Just finished reading this book. I know this is a summary of the book but man there was alot more that could have been said about this amazing story.

They're focused on how the story connects to the overall story of the Bible
Thank you very much... A small request from my side is that I really like the parables that Jesus teach so if possible do make some video of it. There are some of excellent parables, like in John 10; I like that one. On the plus side people will know more about Jesus teaching.

there is SO much more to unpack in the book of 1 Samuel. the character of Jonathan, David's grace towards Saul, the part where Samuel appears to Saul through a medium, the many battles and raids in this book, and even the flaws of David when he joined the Philistines and almost fought against his own people and his own God. i would love to see a more detailed analysis of this book from your perspective!

The story of young David is very important. No man should have any murderous hate in their heart. God delivered Saul many times to David but David didn't take the kill. He loved Saul despite his corruption. Even as the new true king of Israel, he wasn't going to kill Saul. Saul had this love/hate relationship with David. Johnathan was David's best friend back then but Johnathan (a loyal son of Saul which God admires) met his death in battle. My long life best friend is a guy named Jeremy. He is part of me. The brother I've always wanted and we knew each other since we were six (1981). I love him so much and he married well. Nothing will break my heart until when he passes. We are 40 now and he is in below heath. I relate to David on this.

In this particular one, the content of Saul's degrading character really convicted me; I desire to receive noble character like David's who is humble in all situations, trusting in God that He will fulfil His good purposes: "For those who are called according to His Purpose, everything works out for the good who love Him!"

We can’t do anything without God. So glad to be a part of the kingdom. This story can tell me a lot about myself. I struggle with trusting God and his timing.
