Put little crossbars on the ramps for steps and better traction....Love seeing Asa so excited about a new project...Sometimes we need to invest in something just because it makes our heart happy....Good luck with the new friends....😊
I grew up with my Dad raising all kinds of birds including quail. Their new home looks great and they are already really happy and at home in it. Gradually getting into homesteading, even urban homesteading is the way to go. 🙂👍
Great job! The birds really seem to enjoy it there! Mentioning snakes and holes, You may better watch out also for ANY other sort of potential intruders, as beyond snakes, especially rats, raccoons, crows, gulls and herons, Moskitos and even mother nature herselve can get really nasty, when it comes to delicious little dwarf quails! Judging from my own 'learning curve', I'd strongly recommend not only to widen the roof, but also "hiding" it and the cage a bit, so it gets harder for preditors to detect the quails. A few branches or plants on the roof and beside the cage or a simple piece of camouflage net should do the trick. Also better put a big stone onto the roof and some steady door locks or something other "unopenable" for raccoons, gulls, crows, herons etc. to the doors. And yes, little sheets to hide, a big bowl with sand, and adding some additional rungs to the ramps and a more "closed" floor for the bottom part should make things not only more comfy, but also prevent diseases and collateral damage from rats and other stuff, who tend to try to bite of little pieces of bird even through the wire. As quails are notorious for rubbing themselves literally 'into' anything, or better anything into themselves, You do quite good in removing any kind of rusty, rough or spiky surface, wood, splinters or anything else the birds can hurt with or rub themselveves into. Learning it the hard way myself, I also would highly recommend to disinfect the cage and the area around it very thoroughly with some bird apropriate' desinfectant about every two to three weeks - in Florida maybe even more regularly, as the climate there is especially beneficial for all kind of bacteria and viroses, not only dangerous for Your birds put sometimes not completely harmless for humans, too. So if You're already at work of renovating the cage, a coat of disinfectant- and waterproof colour, may would make things a bit safer and easier to clean, too. Sorry, maybee I'm worrying too much, as You, growing up in the countryside, shouldn't be "new" to the birdbusiness, and Your mum owning birds for years and years knows it maybe even better. So I'm convinced, the little featherballs will do very well at the Maas mansion, and will provide a fantastic addition to Your already existing Family Zoo - Also I'm quite convinced Nola and Cindy won't kill them, at least not immediately. Also Abby seems to be very interested and amused by them, and poor Priscilla...Well, she will shower them with love and care, like she does with any new 'family member'...At least You and Isaiah haven't dragged along any of those nasty Ostriches, beasty Zebus or gluttonous Antelopes from the wildlife park into her backyard - the only tiny problem might be, someone would have to explain to her, that quaileggs must be eaten, before delivering into especially cute dwarf quail hedgelings - other ways the quails sooner or later will take over, as they are phenomenally fertile...😂
Nice job on the coop instead of buying oyster shells when they start to lay save all ur egg shells an dry them out an crush them up an mix them in with their food... It does the same thing makes them lay nice good eggs. Just save ur money .❤😂
I saw this really cool quail house/greenhouse. They were raised and layered beds and the quails were out during the day and went in at night. It was one of those homesteading in the city.
Paint cage in jaguars colours and name them after players might persuade Priscilla. Alligator in the pool? Or take after ur mum with pigs you can transport them in your car like she did xx
This is so important. Start where you are with what you have. It doesn't need to be designer quality. My garden is like this, a bunch of things put together for trellis' etc. It may not be the most beautiful, but it's kept neat and tidy and provides a joy like no other. The joy these quails will offer, the process, the learning, the responsibility, it's EVERYTHING. Love this series ❤
Great recycling the old Rabbit hutch into a Quail coop Asa. Aww Sandy wanted to play with her new buddies. Obviously I noticed Cilla forgot to do their nails lol. Blessings.
To offer some roaming options for the quails, I wonder if you could rig some tunnels lining that back area/fence with chicken wire and some holes in the housing unit. You could also make doors so you decide when they roam. The tunnels themselves wouldn't need to be very big but would need to be enclosed obviously so they are protected. It would make them super happy! They'd also be helpful with any pests you may have around the fence area! 🐜and you'd just need to hose it down to clean!
Maybe a few small pieces if wood in the ramp to act as rungs like a ladder for them to climb up the ramp? Some mesh to line the floor to prevent foot injuries and dip their beaks in the water so they know where to get water from. ❤
There’s already slats on the ramps. It has the proper size wire for their feet. You don’t have to lead animals to water. They find it on their own typically. They were excited to get fresh food this morning and knew right where to go. A couple of them have figured out the ramp so far.
@@moremaass its hard to see so I didn't see the slats just the birds sliding down the ramp lol. I've seen foot injuries on bird before so just offering advice because again it's hard to see in a video. And I know when they are newly hatched you usually have to dip their beaks and generally when you relocate them and they are still young its a good idea as well. Just offering suggestions. I'm a huge animal lover and only wishing the best. 💘
@@amyrobles4780 I didn’t know that about the chicks. I’ll keep that in mind when we hatch some. Of all the animals I’ve raised I never saw one that can’t figure out drinking lol and of course they drink water like it’s going to be their last drink! I’m assuming where they came from had similar feeders and water containers because they knew exactly what to do.
Love the new quails they are so cute. Asa you did a really good job turning old rabbit cage into a quails coop. You are amazing engineer. Love watching your family.
Asa that’s so cool! Didn’t know Quail eggs was thing. You should make similar nests like hens in front of doors, then you open door reach in ! Dang you handy!
Can I ask, and sorry if someone else has already asked, why quail and not chickens? Was it a space thing? Do you get foxes and things like that in Florida, like we do here in the UK? I know you mentioned snakes but just wondered. Can you bring the birds in during a hurricane at all? Yes, I know these are daft questions but I'm both nosey and ignorant about these kinds of things and like to know.
My sister has them. Their eggs are delicious but you can eat like 6 at a time because they’re so small lol.. she has a special tool to open the eggs because I guess they can be tricky?
Do you have nesting boxes? Not sure how relatable they are to chickens as far as laying. My sister has chickens. Also, is that temporary housing? I was thinking a run could be really easy with the fence and fine plenty of space.
They just drop eggs wherever usually. It’s permanent housing but I am going to add onto it. Along the fence is exactly where I want to add a run for them.

Do you realise the eggs will be fertile 😢 ? so you might not want to eat them. There's also a stong possibility the might get leg injurues from the steep ladder.
Yes, many people eat fertilized chicken eggs as well. I think they will be ok on the ramp. Chickens and quail use ramps to their coops all the time…not to mention quail in nature don’t have soft hand crafted habitats and they manage just fine.
@@moremaass yes, they absolutely can be eaten but it isn't the nicest of thoughts 😬 completely personal preference. @@vicki472I gotcha. Fortunately the ramps were made for rabbits so they have more clearance than needed. I could tilt the ramp to make it less steep or even put side on it…like little quail hand rails lol. One of my projects is to remove the wood from the top floor so it’s easier to clean. I may come up with a different configuration when I do that. Another option is to separate them once the males have hit breeding age in a couple weeks so half are in the top and half in the bottom. What a cute little coupe condo ✨
Love it! I would say more bedding, they love to fluff it up and make a small nest. Ours do anyway.
I think they need something for traction on the ramps. They are pretty steep for birds. Maybe shims glued onto the surface?
I was going to say this ☀️ But other than that, you did awesome without spending money and repurposing things you already had! They are so cute!!!
It has strips all the way up the ramps.

How noisy are quail?
What is that for
I may have missed it. But what made you decide you get quail verses say chickens?
Quail require a lot less living space than chickens, are significantly quieter, and don't require a permit to raise.
Has Cilla named them all yet?
FYI quails love dirt.....
Asa, has Abby held the little quail yet?
Why did you get them? Maybe I missed that in a video. They are cute, but do they lay eggs or anything?
No, they give live birth.
I’m just joking, yes they lay eggs. A lot like a chicken egg but much smaller
Yes, they lay eggs. That's what I got them for.
Can we get s go pro left in the hut for a day? With ot without commentary.
Haha, I have actually looked into that
hi Asa
i would also put something n the bottom floor bc i have friends here the birds foot got stuck and birds got hurt, so i would do something about that

What are you going to do with them! Eggs or meat?
Mainly eggs
Did I miss why you are getting qual?
For eggs
Are raising them as a hobby, going to eat them or want the eggs?
For eggs. However when we hatch some if we have too many males they will be culled.
Is it safe 2 grow veggies n stuff so close 2 the birds with all the bird shit in your garden area??
Well the waste they produce will be put in the compost for about 6 months then added to the garden.
Worried about their feet getting stuck on the bottom level
