Right on. As much as I love video games (and I mean I freakin LOVE them) cinema still outweighs in passion for me. There's something about the type of essence that only cinema can convey and watching/listening to someone like James talk about these amazing films is something beautiful. James seems to have such a similar taste in films as I do. However James seems to pick up & pick out so many amazing bits & details about films that most of us don't ever pick up on.
I just realized that I've literally grown up watching James. Started watching this at 19, since then, I've gotten married, had a daughter, living in my own place etc. Feels weird to say this but these videos got me through all these years. Thanks James!

"Badges!? We don't need no stinking badges!" I love that classic line. What a chilling performance by Bogart and great supporting cast too! A powerful cautionary tale that warns of the dangers of greed, jealousy and malice. Whoa. Unforgettable film.
@@garthenar I mean there goal wasn't to recreate the movie it was to create the same basic premise there is treasure and people fight/work together to get it.
This movie really subverted my expectations. I was thinking it would be a rousing adventure flick, but by the end, it was a borderline psychological thriller. Bogart's character goes completely crazy, and was not playing the Golden Age Hollywood hero I was expecting. It was like a film noir in the desert.
I hated the Dead Money DLC when it came out, but upon a second playing, I realised it was way more clever than I originally gave it credit for. One arguably useless gold bar at 35lbs a piece? Brilliant, Obsidian. Can I have some more? (Obsidian: "yes")
It's unironically my favorite New Vegas DLC, even gameplay wise. It's so far removed from the base game and other DLCs gameplay that it makes me love it.
The messages of this film were so great. Learning to let go and move on instead of letting your obsessions, specifically with the past, consume you. Bogart's turn as the villain was great as well, you really saw a man whose mind was twisted by a lifetime of past failures coupled with the ever-looming promise of a better and brighter future built on the bones of the still-fresh past, encapsulated by the titular treasure. Even as you feel threatened by him, you almost can't help but empathize, even as you see the mistakes and failings in his character you question the circumstances and whether you would be found wanting in his position. The supporting cast were all very interesting as well, unique and distinct but wholly believable. Bravo.
My husband introduced me to this film almost 20 years ago, and have since always enjoyed it. I like how you talked about this movie, it's definitely an under appreciated film!

Jack Warner fought against many of Huston’s ideas about location shooting but the project had kicked around so long that they had to get it made and Warner finally capitulated to Huston and Bogart grumbling all the way. When the final cut was assembled he admitted it was the best picture the studio had ever made. It didn’t strike at the box office because it was very atypical but no one who has ever seen it hasn’t come away absolutely pulverized.
Thanks for recommending this, James! I just finished watching this and it was excellent! It makes me realize I’ve probably missed many great films older films over the years. I need to check out more of these olds movies.
I love hearing about media that inspired stuff that I love, and knowing that the Sierra Madre dlc from New Vegas, one of my all time favorite games, was heavily inspired by a classic western film is amazing
I have this movie on vhs. It’s from my old rental store, I remember watching it with my dad. You should do one on the African Queen. It’s also got Bogart and Hepburn. Bogart was the only one to not get dysentery from filming on location because he only drank whisky.

True. The danger of greed is depicted in the final shot of the film. Howard even warns earlier: "Gold is a devilish sort of a thing".
That exact line isn't actually spoken in the film, that is from Blazing Saddles
It is an amazing film and Bogart's transformation from likeable drifter to greedy villain is cinematic gold.
