This move changed my entire golf game. Everyone kept telling me to turn my left hand down and do this other stuff to square the clubhead but it never worked. Since I switched to maintaining the bend in my right wrist and releasing it after impact I have gone from hitting 40% of GIR to 70% my last 4 rounds. I am hitting my driver and irons much straighter, and am generating more clubhead speed. It is much easier than trying to time forearm rotation as well.
Really appreciate all the work you put into sharing your knowledge. As another UA-cam creator I know how hard it can be to keep coming up with solid content. Really appreciate what you do Adam!
Adam I just got back from practice. This has made a big difference.Maintaining that angle through the ball creates a lot of powerful contact for me,thanks.
i had a practice session at the range and i kept fatting the ball and hurting my hand. this one gentleman approached me and he said "you look hurt" and i said " yeah coz i keep fatting and hitting the ground". Then he was like "dont hit down on the ground, brush it" followed by a wink then he walked away. This entirely changed my mental approach into hitting a golf ball and i hear the crispy sound of irons 90% of the time!!! Feels so effortless and smooth. Big thanks to that gentleman. When i went home i literally search that concept on youtube and it exists! BRUSH IT!
Adam, I’ve used this drill the last couple of times at the range and notice a huge improvement when I execute it successfully. I’ve been in “scoop prison” for years. Thank you very much
Really impressive instruction: a terse, memorable presentation of the kind of shortcuts to getting the right feels that improve our games till we dumbly realize at some point we stopped doing them. By finding so much solid info in one place, I'm going to save your videos that help me in a dedicated playlist so I can reinforce them with scheduled periodic reviews. Thanks.
I like how you often focus on the mental side of the game too. I really have developed an appreciation for tempo & not trying to kill the ball all the time. Changing my grip has resulted in my losing the slice & hitting the ball straighter. I never really paid attention to grip before until watching one of your vids.
Thanks Adam. Good point about the fairly level brush stroke with forward tilted shaft. I was probably trying to squeeze down the club head on the driving range today, with poor results.
thanks Adam- purchased the Master Class program a few years ago, great resource. I practice the iron impact drills and am able to make great contact on the abbreviated swings and follow through. Problem I'm having now is mid irons are launching too low on the full swings. Any suggestions?
Amazing lesson as always! So simply explained. I was curious to know your thoughts on the common advice of not lifting the head upon impact. I've heard so many differing opinions on this. Would love if you had a video on this! haha
I understand the apply pressure part but when do you do that approximately? From set up or on the start of downswing? And do you keep that pressure on or let up after making contact with ball. Thanks
I think it does apply to the driver. Thanks said, with the ball more forward in stance, and torso more tilted away from Target there should be a pretty level hit. It would be like painting a table that’s tilted higher on the target end. Best, Adam
I'm certain I watched a video of yours yesterday incorporating the release as a flick of paint off the brush. How does that incorporate to this long brush stroke feel? I know this is an old video but I am hoping.
Jason, Each person has to find what’s needed in their swing (a good coach, video camera will help) and work on that. These different drills should be applied as needed, some promote more of one thing (release etc) or the other. Best, Adam
@@Scratchgolfacademy Thank you for the response. That helps immensely. I was trying to make all of it fit together in my swing and losing the intent of your instruction.
As the angle or loft of the club face changes do you change the angle you bend the wrist and reduce the delofting of the club? A five iron had a lower loft than a pitching wedge. do I reduce the amount of angle of the club according to the loft of the club?
Ross, Yes, according to each club. With long clubs the ball position is generally farther forward, so even though the handle is in line with lead arm (give or take) at impact, the delofting is slightly reduced. Best, Adam
@@Scratchgolfacademy I use fitted single length clubs so my ball position doesn't change much but the loft on each iron obviously does. Thanks for repkyong to my question!!👍👍👍
I worked with this drill yesterday and was making solid contact like never before. I have a question though because I was hitting off a mat, not grass. My feeling is hitting off a mat is more forgiving than grass - that somehow the mat helps the club face make better contact with the ball. Has anyone ever raised this question? What is your feeling about this? Thanks for all your work. You've helped make the game fun again for me.
Thanks, and glad you made progress. Regards mats, they help if you hit the ground (mat) a little behind the ball, as the club skids into the ball. Other than that it doesn’t really help. All the best, Adam
First round trying this: much straighter on the range, and on the course, irons to 3 feet from 100, 110, and 160 and a couple more inside 10 feet. I'm a mid-teens handicap, 2 of those were par saves - NEVER hit like that before. My misses trying this were topping a few balls, but at least they rolled 40 yards toward the hole. Now let me find Adam's video on controlling the bottom of the swing....
This has been a very effective tip for me. I've always tried to keep the right hand very passive in the downswing. Every once in a while after hitting a great shot I would sense that the right hand helped the downswing, but I had no idea how to implement this feel. Your tip definitely is a great visualization but I wonder what you think of the following swing feel/thought. The hands have many proprioceptors in them and until seeing your tip I've tried to think about anything but them. I find it a little easier to think about the trail hand lifeline gently maintaining downward pressure on the lead thumb, by imagining that the lead thumb has a stiff bristle brush texture. I think that this is a very good way to keep the hands soft but connected throughout the swing and it helps to maintain a constant grip pressure. It is a feel that makes me very aware of what the right palm is doing when it pressures the shaft during the downswing.
OK. I worked on this lesson and I surprised myself!! I hit my 8 iron as far as I would normally hit my 6 iron!! I'm afraid to hit my 6 iron because I have a deep wooded area 190 yards behind my house!! I'm afraid I may lose the balls!! LOL I am really happy with how this worked for me!!

I watched again to see your shoulders move back & through, pulling the brush through the ball, do we tend to get more handsy as we get older?
Bob,
As we get older it's harder to be as dynamic with the body, So, yes, we likely get a little more handsy.

what generates club head speed if the wrist is cocked at impact?
Jack,
The wrists are certainly unlocking, just relatively stable at impact.
