Changes since review: 1: Multi web browser windows can now be opened and all have their own control of multiple tabs. 5 browser instances can now be opened (separate browser windows) but using my trick mentioned of adding websites as web app shortcuts, this limit can be expanded even further. 2: mouse support is working well within android, but pico connect has (at this time) not been updated to pass mouse clicks or Bluetooth keyboard inputs to the desktop. 3: I did not mention speaker sound quality, compare colours and brightness or battery life to other headsets because this is not final hardware in the video. I have already preordered my own pico 4 ultra and will do comparisons and any further video updates with that headset.
I'm a current Pico 4 user and was undecided about upgrading to the Pico 4 Ultra, especially concerned about the unchanged resolution. However, this review has convinced me to go ahead with the purchase.
Allelujah, a true review.... the pico bashing made me crazy during lasts weeks, thanks for bringing another truth, and it seems a very very good option. I think i'll probably go in, just for the not wavy passthrough ^^
and the trackers! as a dev i can't wait to attach them to racquets etc. this really opens up possibilities. i'm thinking about sport training games which records your movement and swing and compare that to a professional's, or at least give you stats on how hard/fast you did it

Hey mate, great review. Looking to get into VR but its a nightmare trying to find a review longer than 8 minutes that's not blatantly biased. Pico 4 appeals to me as a PC owner whos not a fan of meta. My main concerns are the vibrancy of colours, the locked 360 windows, and the smaller app support. Im primarily going to be streaming from a PC, so i can live without the latter, but do you think it's worth taking a gamble on this over the mainstream Quest 3?
Honestly, it's just something you'd have to try yourself Pico have better comfort, balance and overlap, quest 3 have better lenses but less overlap. Both streaming on VD, ultra just got update that does 600mbps where quest 3 can only do 500mbps (h264+) But then VD can use hand tracking with quest and not Pico yet. As someone who will still choose the older neo 3 link because of display port, I can't really personally say one is better than the other, they are two different headsets and unfortunately you can only understand the look and feel when it's on your head, feature set, os and apps are different which again will need experience to decide what you prefer VR is a massive pain in the ass, there's just no way to show it ( I never do through lenses as that's a waste of time and inaccurate )

I think the main thing tipping me towards the Pico was avoiding the Meta ecosystem, but learning that they're owned by the TikTok people kind of made that argument null and void anyways. The quest 3 is about a £100 cheaper right now where I'm at, which leaves me with budget for a BoboVR strap which should help alleviate some of the battery and weight distribution concerns

Could you please tell me what the max. Resolution is if you use a 1000Mbit USB C cable to connect to your MacBook. I have a Quest 2 and Netflix, Prime Video etc won’t render above 720p. I could use HDMI link to connect to my MacBook but that would only give me a resolution of 1080p and it would be nice if I could take full advantage of the 2160p on the Pico when using a USB C cable to then stream 4k Netflix :)

Not unless you have a pc GPU that can do av1 decoding, hevc and av1 can do 200 bitrate and h264 can do 500 with virtual desktop on the ultra Resolutions are all the same though, you'd only really have that change in brightness and colours which if already opening a p4 and just doing PCVR probably isn't worth it alone for upgrade

Doesn't seem to be different, same magnet points, same forehead heavy profile, same faceplate as far as I can tell. my test unit was different, getting closer to lenses and fit me much better, but had no magnets. Not sure why they didn't keep that profile instead
Amazing review buddy I have the Pico 4 and was tempted for the Ultra but I just got a PSVR2 for 250 euro today. Haven't tried it yet as the PC adapter will be another two days but I think these two headsets will fit my needs 😀
I can't use the Quest 3 as too front heavy. Ive used the original Pico a lot. I also have PSVR2 and fine with using that, as balanced securely. Ive sold Pico 4 say may buy this of price gets lower. For a UK price of £529 its far too expensive. If it were £399, maybe. I will wait.
Latency metrics read differently and can't be compared. Compression at 1000 bitrate by cable is less noticeable than 500 by VD using h264 codec, which is to be expected but then VD has some more features to improve visuals so can get pretty close. I can't show compression in videos unfortunately

Haha, thanks so much! yeah not much left to imagination from stickers, I think it's main purpose was to determine who if anyone leaked headsets before release (as it's said could be told by pattern) 5.12 update just rolled out for everyone now, which has fixed the android stores not working and also introduced the mouse support and the Pico VR mobile app changes shown in video, along with a long line of other fixes and improvements. Will need to do a quick follow up video at some point.
Srry, can you help me chosing between the Pico 4 Pro and Pico 4 Ultra, i would like to have full tracking but I'm not sure if the body tracking with the motion trackers works the same or worse using the Pico 4 Pro instead of the Pico 4 Ultra, I'm more interested in the body tracking so idk which one is a better option. If the Pico 4 Pro or Pico 4 Ultra.
Motion trackers work the same across them both. Pico 4 pro is only sold in china, and has different firmware and different apps available on it stores, you'll need to research what's needed to get a 4 pro working in your country first, flashing firmwares and such.

Spatial video are using 84° of the wider FOV available in theses 32 Mp camera, sadly by using quad bining in MR mode It means that you don't have around 8Mp for a 84°...but a fraction of it. What a waste! Why don't they unable the MR mode and the quad bining during spatial video recording? XR2 Gen2+ is able to record 8K, so i guess it can record 2x8Mp at 60fps...and not only 3Mp at 60fps... Need a firmware to unlock this! With this abilty to make quite good spatial video, i would buy this device !
For the viewing size of the videos back in headset, the resolution is pretty good, can't complain too much for the feature as it's implemented extremely well It would be nice to have the option to focus more camera resolution into the small preview window, possibly by use of externally starting uninterrupted recordings through mobile app (for viewfinding not wearing headset) But if I could only see the small preview window and nothing else for MR (surrounding border) and it causing issues visually with head motion when wearing the headset not binning the cameras, that would be pretty uncomfortable for use.
Would the HDMI capture work for running sim racing big screen from an Xbox without significant lag? Reason i ask is if that works then i could still justify getting a vr now and later invest in a fully capable pc while keeping the same headset.
It won't make the game 'VR' only display a virtual display. Latency is entirely dependent on capture card and any encoding/processing settings for the feed In all honesty, for serious sim racing I think the latency will be just too much from capture cards
@@virtuallyreal thanks for the comment. And yes that was my idea to also use the headset as a virtual display then gradually later upgrade to a fully vr capable pc. I have not even tried one of these on, and do not care about the standard vr games at all, but its a pretty big investment to go all in on pc and headset. Guess I'll hang back for now.

@@PlebiasFate1609 pcvr, virtual desktop has all same graphics and bitrates as quest 3. Quest 3 has hand tracking and elbow estimation with VD I believe. Pico doesn't as they haven't exposed the correct openxr extensions for hand tracking on VD yet Pico connect for PCVR can the use motion trackers in pc VRchat and has beta for handtracking, so that'll be coming soon. Covered pcvr in section of this video Microphone is much better on the ultra
How many screens can you open with pico connect to your pc? With virtual desktop thats 3 total. Like the quest 3, but since the Pico ultra has more ram I would have thought they would bump it up to 4.
The issue that caused VD to only have 3 streams is the quality filtering they do meaning the XR2G2 can only handle having 3 open at onece without issues
Pico connect right now is one window in headset, but can do multi monitor (whatever physical you have) They are working on update to display I believe 3 displays into separate windows.

Good luck folks! I'm returning a supposed "Global" version...its just all Chineese stores; if I wanted an erector set I would do that. Naybe if one lives this stuff...it is no imposition. However, the one camera approch to seeing your living room, and less than adaquite hand tracking by far...etc. I found exhausting. Alternatively, Facebook is the...other "reality". Guess Real Reality is for me. And watch out when youre trying to figure out which Pico 4 you...Really have...
I wouldn't ever recommend people buy headsets from resellers like AliExpress as they will always be china, with different firmware and stores Whatever money is saved just isn't worth it because of problems you will face trying to get it functioning correctly outside of china
If they could just give us back the display port!! and maybe add oled, this thing would be the hootest seller in the VR space. Too bad they are sitting on their hands and not doing these obvious things.
I'd love display port as an addition for the better visuals, but I have to admit, the integration with actually using the PC is much better with Pico connect, as steam VR alone is very barebones for that sort of use. I'm sure Pico hear everyone's screams about display port, can only hope for next time I guess, until then my neo 3 link is safe and still my pcvr headset

Thanks to your enhanced driver and res package this is such a gem of a headset. Would have liked to see Pico making a really meaningful move with the 4 Ultra, it's progress nonetheless but not as much as many would have hoped for.
it would be interesting to know if the recording settings have been improved. With the Pico 4 it was only possible recording at 30fps, which looks pretty terrible. So 60fps or even native refresh rate would be much better, especially for recording PCVR. Unfortunately there is no app like the QuestGameOptimizer available, which allows recording at a very high quality and native refresh rate if needed. I wish the Pico 4 Ultra would also support more refresh rates, especially 120Hz, which makes a massive difference in some games. Also for PCVR recording 60Hz would be perfect, but even this is only supported by the Quest 2 at the moment. I am also curious about the lenses of the Ultra version. Even if the brightness has been improved the visual quality of the Quest 3 is miles ahead compared to the normal Pico 4. But this also seems to be depending on the render resolution, since the Pico 4 needs a higher render resolution to achieve a similar pixel density. PS: All through the complete video the bitrates are not megabyte / second, but megabit / second, which is a huge difference !!
@@ProgrammistMusic my mistake on Mb and MB, was an extremely lengthy process doing this all in headset. Video recordings still at same of Pico 4 but feedback has gone in to unlock more, there is ADB command you can do if wired to pc that will record 90fps video, but I've not tested how this fairs in game use, only testing. Having a game optimiser would be great, I hope that Pico can open up some adb commands to make that possible.

I just hate the guys at Pico... why they didn't add one single feature that makes it better than Q3? I thought multi-tasking... but why do I need 20 screens (Pico4U) when 6 screens (Q3) sounds just fine?! Same resolution, dpi, ppd, display we already saw in Pico4 and about the same as Q3. (just learned HP Reverb hat about the same specs like these HMD... but was released six years ago.. lol no progress at all) Passthrough is better than Q3 but what for? The 32MP cameras actually operate at 8MP and are better than Q3 but there is not a huge difference. And who actually NEEDS passthrough?! Wifi 7 sounds nice but according to user comments is 6e just fine for Q3. And since Pico4U and Q3 are using the same chips, it should be not of a big deal to upgrade Q3 with Wifi 7 in near future. Dammit, just give me a reason to buy Pico 4 Ultra... I am searching for arguments since before its release
They are two very different headsets. Both are better than one another at different things and the only real way you'll know what you prefer or want is putting both on your head and using them, that's the annoying thing about VR Specs can say one thing but aren't the only thing you should focus on, the comfort both ergonomically and visually, the OS, ease of use, feature set and game library is something you need to wear and use the headsets for to get better understanding of 20 windows is maybe overkill to some, but for actually multitasking and being genuinely useful, it's very welcome and something that I personally cannot give up now I have it.

@@virtuallyreal So P4U does not save window positions? This is something I would expect when working with up to 20 window regularly. Especially when using it for work, I wouldn't want to rearrange my workplace every time, several times a day (considering lunch break, meetings/calls, ... edit: I just noticed an error in my thoughts... Those free floating windows... those are special applications that I need to download from some store. And I guess there will be no such package in any store for Visual Studio, cloud services, ... Do you know if any headset supports several Windows desktops next to each other? Windows (pro) shouldn't have any issues as it just thinks it is some multi-monitor set-up. But does Pico/Quest (or Virtual Desktop) support opening more than one Windows Desktop? editedit: Virtual Desktop supports multi monitor VR

Pico needs to use the Meta Horizon OS or just the Horizon store and thisnheadset would be the best headset on the market the only thing that let's this headset down is the lack of software compared to the Quest 3 and that problem could easily be solved if they used the Horizon OS or use just use the Horizon store and then it will have access to all of the Quest games and apps
Somebody who talk about a "lack of software" in pico headset is définitely somebody who don't know pico software... We have a lot of features in pico 4 that you can't find in a meta quest. And personnaly i absolutely don't want méta OS in my pico 🔒

But meta os personally frustrates me constantly, either limiting what I can do or just being broken, the multi window and app experience between Pico 4 ultra and quest 3 couldn't be further apart and I much prefer the ultra for android app use.
Pico neo 3 link is still king and now the quest 3 via usb is also really good until they realize that whoever adds a display port connector on any of these new headsets will dominate the market
LOL!!!!!!! If Pico does not want to sell their products in the US, they can all go pound sand. I am not buying one of their products internationally, and if it should not work correctly, go through the hassle of shipping it back to try and get it repaired. You sound like you live in another country. Buying Pico is probably easy for you and glad you like the product. But I am not going to order their products all the way from the UK and pay they overseas shipping costs, where the could easily put their products on US Amazon for us to buy. Ridiculous. No thanks to getting a Pico product. If they start selling them in the US, I may then look at them.
PCVR for roomscale games I find absolutely fine, and with the ability to raise the bitrate to 1000Mbps over usb sim racing or flying is better, but still not as good as display port due to the better image quality and latency of display port. This would really have been one of the best headsets for every use if it had display port, it's such a shame that the money and focus is where the majority of the market is, and doesn't consider the extra interest all round if it catered for just about everyone with display port....and eye tracking, and face tracking. Maybe next time 😃

Lol, so don't buy it. However I would like to know what you would recommend for someone who wants a wireless PCVR experience for roomscale games? And also, I'm not defending it, I want a display port for sim racing/flying, but I definitely don't want it for room scale, probably like alot of others. Also with gpu capabilities and good market availability, and the quality of wireless headsets like the p4u or Q3, no defense needed, wireless pcvr is awesome-if you disagree, then possibly worth upgrading your system or get your settings more fine tuned 👍
@@picofranceif it is just 150, PCVR users probably would pay double for it to be added, I know I would, there are no new/good headset options in this area. But going back to the original comment, I think roomscale pcvr streaming is very good, the added latency for sim racing and graphical demand still makes display port the best option. 5.12 update just rolled out for everyone now, which has fixed the android stores not working and also introduced the mouse support and the Pico VR mobile app changes shown in video, along with a long line of other fixes and improvements.
Will need to do a quick follow up video at some point.
Srry, can you help me chosing between the Pico 4 Pro and Pico 4 Ultra, i would like to have full tracking but I'm not sure if the body tracking with the motion trackers works the same or worse using the Pico 4 Pro instead of the Pico 4 Ultra, I'm more interested in the body tracking so idk which one is a better option. If the Pico 4 Pro or Pico 4 Ultra.
Motion trackers work the same across them both.
Pico 4 pro is only sold in china, and has different firmware and different apps available on it stores, you'll need to research what's needed to get a 4 pro working in your country first, flashing firmwares and such.

Spatial video are using 84° of the wider FOV available in theses 32 Mp camera, sadly by using quad bining in MR mode
It means that you don't have around 8Mp for a 84°...but a fraction of it.
What a waste! Why don't they unable the MR mode and the quad bining during spatial video recording?
XR2 Gen2+ is able to record 8K, so i guess it can record 2x8Mp at 60fps...and not only 3Mp at 60fps...
Need a firmware to unlock this!
With this abilty to make quite good spatial video, i would buy this device !
For the viewing size of the videos back in headset, the resolution is pretty good, can't complain too much for the feature as it's implemented extremely well
It would be nice to have the option to focus more camera resolution into the small preview window, possibly by use of externally starting uninterrupted recordings through mobile app (for viewfinding not wearing headset)
But if I could only see the small preview window and nothing else for MR (surrounding border) and it causing issues visually with head motion when wearing the headset not binning the cameras, that would be pretty uncomfortable for use.

Would the HDMI capture work for running sim racing big screen from an Xbox without significant lag?
Reason i ask is if that works then i could still justify getting a vr now and later invest in a fully capable pc while keeping the same headset.
It won't make the game 'VR' only display a virtual display.
Latency is entirely dependent on capture card and any encoding/processing settings for the feed
In all honesty, for serious sim racing I think the latency will be just too much from capture cards
@@virtuallyreal thanks for the comment. And yes that was my idea to also use the headset as a virtual display then gradually later upgrade to a fully vr capable pc. I have not even tried one of these on, and do not care about the standard vr games at all, but its a pretty big investment to go all in on pc and headset. Guess I'll hang back for now.

Yes I have a quest 3 here, how they compare would depend on what specific area you are comparing, as they are very different headsets.

Quest 3 has hand tracking and elbow estimation with VD I believe.
Pico doesn't as they haven't exposed the correct openxr extensions for hand tracking on VD yet
Pico connect for PCVR can the use motion trackers in pc VRchat and has beta for handtracking, so that'll be coming soon.

How many screens can you open with pico connect to your pc? With virtual desktop thats 3 total. Like the quest 3, but since the Pico ultra has more ram I would have thought they would bump it up to 4.
The issue that caused VD to only have 3 streams is the quality filtering they do meaning the XR2G2 can only handle having 3 open at onece without issues
Pico connect right now is one window in headset, but can do multi monitor (whatever physical you have)
They are working on update to display I believe 3 displays into separate windows.

Good luck folks! I'm returning a supposed "Global" version...its just all Chineese stores; if I wanted an erector set I would do that. Naybe if one lives this stuff...it is no imposition. However, the one camera approch to seeing your living room, and less than adaquite hand tracking by far...etc. I found exhausting. Alternatively, Facebook is the...other "reality". Guess Real Reality is for me. And watch out when youre trying to figure out which Pico 4 you...Really have...
I wouldn't ever recommend people buy headsets from resellers like AliExpress as they will always be china, with different firmware and stores
Whatever money is saved just isn't worth it because of problems you will face trying to get it functioning correctly outside of china

I'd love display port as an addition for the better visuals, but I have to admit, the integration with actually using the PC is much better with Pico connect, as steam VR alone is very barebones for that sort of use.
I'm sure Pico hear everyone's screams about display port, can only hope for next time I guess, until then my neo 3 link is safe and still my pcvr headset

I don't have the headset here unfortunately
it would be interesting to know if the recording settings have been improved. With the Pico 4 it was only possible recording at 30fps, which looks pretty terrible. So 60fps or even native refresh rate would be much better, especially for recording PCVR. Unfortunately there is no app like the QuestGameOptimizer available, which allows recording at a very high quality and native refresh rate if needed. I wish the Pico 4 Ultra would also support more refresh rates, especially 120Hz, which makes a massive difference in some games. Also for PCVR recording 60Hz would be perfect, but even this is only supported by the Quest 2 at the moment.
I am also curious about the lenses of the Ultra version. Even if the brightness has been improved the visual quality of the Quest 3 is miles ahead compared to the normal Pico 4. But this also seems to be depending on the render resolution, since the Pico 4 needs a higher render resolution to achieve a similar pixel density.
PS: All through the complete video the bitrates are not megabyte / second, but megabit / second, which is a huge difference !!
@@ProgrammistMusic my mistake on Mb and MB, was an extremely lengthy process doing this all in headset.
Video recordings still at same of Pico 4 but feedback has gone in to unlock more, there is ADB command you can do if wired to pc that will record 90fps video, but I've not tested how this fairs in game use, only testing.
Having a game optimiser would be great, I hope that Pico can open up some adb commands to make that possible.
Great review as always, although this should have been pico4s with Pico ultra adding eye tracking and improved displays, with DP, not sure why anyone would buy this over quest 3, unless emotions take over

I just hate the guys at Pico... why they didn't add one single feature that makes it better than Q3?
I thought multi-tasking... but why do I need 20 screens (Pico4U) when 6 screens (Q3) sounds just fine?!
Same resolution, dpi, ppd, display we already saw in Pico4 and about the same as Q3. (just learned HP Reverb hat about the same specs like these HMD... but was released six years ago.. lol no progress at all)
Passthrough is better than Q3 but what for? The 32MP cameras actually operate at 8MP and are better than Q3 but there is not a huge difference. And who actually NEEDS passthrough?!
Wifi 7 sounds nice but according to user comments is 6e just fine for Q3. And since Pico4U and Q3 are using the same chips, it should be not of a big deal to upgrade Q3 with Wifi 7 in near future.
Dammit, just give me a reason to buy Pico 4 Ultra... I am searching for arguments since before its release
They are two very different headsets.
Both are better than one another at different things and the only real way you'll know what you prefer or want is putting both on your head and using them, that's the annoying thing about VR
Specs can say one thing but aren't the only thing you should focus on, the comfort both ergonomically and visually, the OS, ease of use, feature set and game library is something you need to wear and use the headsets for to get better understanding of
20 windows is maybe overkill to some, but for actually multitasking and being genuinely useful, it's very welcome and something that I personally cannot give up now I have it.

Especially when using it for work, I wouldn't want to rearrange my workplace every time, several times a day (considering lunch break, meetings/calls, ...
edit: I just noticed an error in my thoughts... Those free floating windows... those are special applications that I need to download from some store. And I guess there will be no such package in any store for Visual Studio, cloud services, ...
Do you know if any headset supports several Windows desktops next to each other? Windows (pro) shouldn't have any issues as it just thinks it is some multi-monitor set-up. But does Pico/Quest (or Virtual Desktop) support opening more than one Windows Desktop?

I have not seen any benefit in going beyond 100Mbps on my Q2. Granted this has a high resolution, but still, 300+Mbps is just pointless.

Even the 1000mb with wired usb and max settings is miles away from my display port connected headset when sim racing
Pico needs to use the Meta Horizon OS or just the Horizon store and thisnheadset would be the best headset on the market the only thing that let's this headset down is the lack of software compared to the Quest 3 and that problem could easily be solved if they used the Horizon OS or use just use the Horizon store and then it will have access to all of the Quest games and apps
Somebody who talk about a "lack of software" in pico headset is définitely somebody who don't know pico software... We have a lot of features in pico 4 that you can't find in a meta quest. And personnaly i absolutely don't want méta OS in my pico 🔒

But meta os personally frustrates me constantly, either limiting what I can do or just being broken, the multi window and app experience between Pico 4 ultra and quest 3 couldn't be further apart and I much prefer the ultra for android app use.
Pico neo 3 link is still king and now the quest 3 via usb is also really good until they realize that whoever adds a display port connector on any of these new headsets will dominate the market
My neo 3 link is safe for now, the pcvr image is just too good

LOL!!!!!!! If Pico does not want to sell their products in the US, they can all go pound sand. I am not buying one of their products internationally, and if it should not work correctly, go through the hassle of shipping it back to try and get it repaired.
You sound like you live in another country. Buying Pico is probably easy for you and glad you like the product. But I am not going to order their products all the way from the UK and pay they overseas shipping costs, where the could easily put their products on US Amazon for us to buy. Ridiculous.

Still no Display Port ..... Streaming PCVR is garbage .
PCVR for roomscale games I find absolutely fine, and with the ability to raise the bitrate to 1000Mbps over usb sim racing or flying is better, but still not as good as display port due to the better image quality and latency of display port. This would really have been one of the best headsets for every use if it had display port, it's such a shame that the money and focus is where the majority of the market is, and doesn't consider the extra interest all round if it catered for just about everyone with display port....and eye tracking, and face tracking. Maybe next time 😃

Lol, so don't buy it. However I would like to know what you would recommend for someone who wants a wireless PCVR experience for roomscale games? And also, I'm not defending it, I want a display port for sim racing/flying, but I definitely don't want it for room scale, probably like alot of others. Also with gpu capabilities and good market availability, and the quality of wireless headsets like the p4u or Q3, no defense needed, wireless pcvr is awesome-if you disagree, then possibly worth upgrading your system or get your settings more fine tuned 👍
