I agree. If another player had very comparable offensive stats to Ohtani and was also a great defensive player who helped his team make the playoffs, that might be a worthy choice. But Ohtani achieved so many historic feats in 2024 and with numbers that no one else came close to, as you say.
as for the argument "DH can't win due to not playing the field". That loses all it's steam when the WAR goes over 9. baseballreference WAR for Ohtani this season is 9.3! That's highest in his league. For reference, Ortiz and Edgar martinez never got over 7 war.
It’s mind boggling that you can reach 9+WAR without playing the field… They complain he is “only” a DH. But even in his injured, rehabbing year, he would be playing as if he had his healthy year. Most other FULLTIME career sluggers don’t reach up to his numbers. The guy is in a IL year. The Dodgers are getting a 2-way player kind of number even while injured.
I take many stats with a grain of salt, but that's an interesting WAR number. I believe they also deduct a certain amount from the score for a DH since he's supposedly not contributing on the defensive end. So his number probably started higher than that. But as Ortiz says, there are many other things a star DH does for his team that don't show up in stats. Mookie Betts said recently that Ohtani has carried the team. That tells you all you need to know on top of his spectacular numbers that exceed everyone else in the NL.
Ohtani has 4 consecutive seasons with a 9 WAR. To put this in perspective Hank Aason only had 2 seasons of 9 WAR. Never had WAR of 6 for one season (Garvey, Valenzuela, Brock). Ohtani's season is historical. Even if you disregard the arbitrary 50/50 achievement, you add up his total base + SB net of CS + walks, he has 547. That's something only Barry Bonds and Babe Ruth have done. To put in context, Aaron Judge has 535 this season, and in his 62 HR season he had 515. Speed kills, and unfortunately in baseball it is seemingly just one stat while walk impacts all % calculation like SLG%, OPS% etc. One little nugget, Aaron Judge has 22 GIDP this season, Ohtani has 7, that's where speed matters, when you can beat a double play and extend the inning, couple that with stolen base you are back in scoring position, that's 15 outs. His offense production more than outweight not playing defense, which is not a requirement for his position, a position that's required in the game. He isn't hurting his team by not playing defense. He should be unanimous MVP.
@@ST-lb9tt exactly, I am surprised not many experts emphasize that. Walk is the single thing that Aaron Judge does much better than Ohtani, while Ohtani beats him in SB by far. However, SB is one stat while BB impacts OBS, SLG, OPS, making it seem like Judge dominated Ohtani in production, when he basically just walks more. IMO, SB should be factored into total base, and that will give credit to those speedy guys in SLG and OPS.

Uh, duh. I am a little more ticked as to why a guy who juiced is still being given airtime to comment about legitimate player performance. How he got into the HOF but Pete rose being banned from the ballot is league hypocrisy at its finest. Ok, rose didn't come clean for a long time, but neither did Ortiz and others. They were caught and even then, a number of them still deny it (bonds, sosa, and Clemens, are on the front of that line). Ok, betting was against the rules and PEDs were not. But don't tell me the players weren't doing it to gain an advantage through questionable means. if they didn't, why have so many denied taking them? Not everyone was doing it because they knew it smacked of cheating. They soiled the game as much, if not more so, than Rose ever had. Because of it, so many current records are suspect. And whenever any current or future player makes a run at power stat records, there will be questions raised as to whether they are doing it legitimately.

Ohtani also has many fans in Korea. We have a dark tragic history of experiencing slavery, forced labor, Unit 731 by Japanese colonialists in WW2, which the Japanese denies and has never apologized to this day. But I am glad we can be united in sports.

But it doesn't really matter because he'll never get enough playing time doing "both" to put up those kinds of numbers (on either side of the ball) -- especially playing under Roberts in L.A.
Are we really gonna bring race into this. if it was measured on stats, who is better?
deep down i think david ortiz loves shohei. i think it's more just stirring the pot, cause a bit of controversy, little contrarian doesn't want everyone to just blindly worship him even though we all worship ohtani
Ortiz is the greatest clutch hitter I ever saw.
👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻
David been very vocal and showed his love for Ohtani but that one tweet. Bout the pretty girl shit was just out of emotions . I’m sure he love Ohtani like the rest of us .
Ohtani also has many fans in Korea. We have a dark tragic history of experiencing slavery, forced labor, Unit 731 by Japanese colonialists in WW2, which the Japanese denies and has never apologized to this day. But I am glad we can be united in sports.
Gee David, way to go out on a limb. LMAO
Never likes Ortiz. Dudes peanut butter jealous
I ageed with you David papi Ortiz king magic goatani should be mvp in 2024😮❤🎉
Triple crown winner but Arraez 🐓
In all fairness, Ortiz deserved an MVP or two. He was robbed of an MVP in 2006 when he hit 54 HR, 137 RBIs. They gave it to Justin Morneau who hit 321/34/130. vs 286/54/137. Ortiz should've won the MVP in 2006.
He wasn't even runner up that season and came in third behind Morneau and Jeter. It says a lot of what writers thought about DH hitters back then.
Yeah, that was a pretty big whiff. Did all three of those players' teams make the playoffs that year? Sometimes that seems to play an inordinately large part (I'd just use it as a tiebreaker, at most).
Pretty girl Ohtani most certainly does
big pappi is a hofamer among hofamers. that 2013 post season with the red sox can't be topped for pure entertainment. to d.ortiz: you da MAN!
オルティーズも納得してしまうほどの大谷の活躍
私は日本人です。大谷翔平に対するOrtizのPretty Girlという言葉は、悪いのでしょうか?
教えてください。
Asians gonna play the race card if Ohtani doesn't win because 99% knows he should win. That just means 1% are racist and in that 1%, most of the voters for mvp are racist if Ohtani does not win. lol😂
When have Asians ever played the race card for you to even post this ?
この活躍で大谷をMVPに選出しなければMLBはクソッタレだ!
Ohtani is the goat of all goats.
Oh really dave thanks for the insights 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Papi is just saying that to avoid backlash but we all know he’s a dodger hater and he doesn’t think Otani deserves to be MVP!
Ortiz is a liar and I don’t think is truthful. Liar!!
Ohtani's only downfall is that his skin color is incorrect 😂
