  • My second pair of stilts, which I'm working on for an upcoming faun costume. I'm really pleased with how they've turned out so far, and I look forward to the rest of the process!
    **Edit: The kind-of finished product can be seen in my Wendigo Costume Teaser video, which can be viewed here:
    • A Glitch in Humanity -...
    It's a very quick glimpse of the stilts. I might make a more detailed video of the completed wendigo costume eventually.

      Go for it! I don't know if I can consider these stilts 'my' design, really, because it's just Gryphern's design altered by some serious MacGyversisms... but I suppose that does put an original twist on things. Haha!
      I'm glad that my video can be of assistance. Please let me know when you finish your build! I'd love to see how they turn out. :) Especially if you find a way to improve the design along the way!

      @InstilledPhearCostumeCavern  8 років тому +2

      Unfortunately, I have been unable to find any photographs. (I'm very bad at documenting my work.) I do know that the modifications are comfort-based. The angle of the toe-guard was lowered slightly to take the weight off the balls of my feet, and I think I adjusted the shoe positioning so my ankle matched up correctly with the pivot joint. I also replaced the shoelaces with elastic so the shoes would be slip-on, and I added velcro straps in various locations to make the stilts more snug. Very minor things, which may not be necessary for everyone, but were necessary for me.

      I made a pattern with saran wrap and masking tape! After I created and attached the hooves to the bottom, I stuck my legs in the stilts and just wrapped and taped it all up. Then I cut off that layer, and voila! A custom pattern to use to cut the fur! Everything from there is just hot glue, velcro, and some good old-fashioned hand-stitching..

      I'm glad I could help! I made a few small changes after I posted this video so they're more comfortable and I can balance better. You might be interested to see. I'll try to post an update here soon!
      Are you building your stilts so you can crouch comfortably or walk upright? I built these specifically so my center of gravity is right over the wooden base, so walking upright is wonderfully easy, even on carpet and grass. Crouching or being hunched over is an entirely different story. Keep that in mind while you're building!

    • @michellek6006
      @michellek6006 9 років тому +1

      What changes did you make to it? I'm definitely interested in any insight you can share!
      I'm building them to walk upright. How did you figure out what your center of gravity was? I just got my materials today, woo. Thanks!

    • @InstilledPhearCostumeCavern
      @InstilledPhearCostumeCavern  9 років тому +3

      Michelle Khuu The biggest change I made was altering the angle of the toe piece from 90 degrees to more like 125 degrees, so it sloped downward instead of being flat. It made a big difference as far as comfort goes! The balls of my feet were taking all of my weight and getting really sore really fast, and changing the slope distributed the weight a bit into my toes as well. I also added some velcro straps to keep my toes and feet even more in place. The less effort it takes to lift your digi-leg, the better!
      A person's center of gravity is usually their core, the chest/stomach area. You want the base of the stilts to be directly below that. Easy enough when you're building them to stand upright! But if you want to crouch when you walk, your center of gravity is farther forward, making it difficult to balance on stilts like mine because you constantly feel like you're going to fall flat on your face. It can be done, but it would take a fat lot of practice and a walking stick. XD

    • @Thegadgetfish
      @Thegadgetfish 9 років тому

      ***** Great tidbit about the toe piece. I'll definitely have that come in at an angle now. Did you use wood glue to mostly hold it together, or screws? How long can you wear the stilts before your feet start wearing out?

    • @InstilledPhearCostumeCavern
      @InstilledPhearCostumeCavern  9 років тому +1

      thegadgetfish I used both! I wood-glued the pieces and then screwed them together while the glue was still tacky. I intend for these puppies to last for years.
      As far as wearing them goes, there are a number of factors that determine how long you'd last... Because I'm used to being on my feet often anyway and I have previous practice with digitigrade stilts (really bad and uncomfortable ones!), it wouldn't be terribly difficult for me to wear these new ones for 6+ hours. Just like any other article of footwear, though, you have to 'break them in,' so to speak. After the preliminary break-in, getting used to how they feel on different terrains and whatnot, you could probably spend all day in them if you had to. They really are quite cozy!

      When I needed paws for my werewolf costume, I added a hinge in the front of the stilts with another two-inch piece of wood. I used foam to shape the toes and glued them onto that hinge. It was a fairly realistic effect because the hinge allowed the toes to curl up as I walked. I recommend it!

    • @InstilledPhearCostumeCavern
      @InstilledPhearCostumeCavern  9 років тому +1

      The pivot joint can be easily achieved with the right nuts and bolts! I used flat washers and nylon insert lock nuts. As long as you don't screw the nuts in too tightly, the joint should be able to pivot! It's difficult to explain in detail, especially because this video doesn't focus very well on the joint... I would recommend going to your local hardware store and asking the clerk how they would do a pivot joint. That's what I did!

    What did you call the super strong stuff? I can't for the life of me find it on the internet, and I have tried every way of typing it that I could think of...
    Otherwise great stilts! I think I might make some like that, one day, if I find the time

    • @InstilledPhearCostumeCavern
      @InstilledPhearCostumeCavern  7 років тому +2

      It's called sinew! I use the artificial stuff, but it's still crazy strong like real animal sinew would be. It comes in lots of colors, too! I got mine at a mountain man rendezvous, but you can find it easily on eBay or Amazon. I constantly use it in my costumes for all kinds of things, especially in place of sewing thread. I recommend using screws rather than sinew on stilts, though, since sinew can rub and fray over time. The only reason I used sinew here is because the piece of PVC pipe on the front was smaller than I thought, and inserting screws through it would have caused the screws to poke and scratch at my legs as I walked around. It made a very good alternative, though, and the sinew lasted a good two years on these stilts before I had to redo it.
      Thank you for the compliment! I may post an update on these stilts and show everyone the final product, one day, if I find the time. ;)

I hope to make a tutorial for stilts someday when I can use power tools again! My design is heavily based on the ones I've found elsewhere here on UA-cam, though, so you might have some luck finding a video tutorial on other channels.

    Would heavy wood be good for a kinda heavy set person?

    • @InstilledPhearCostumeCavern
      @InstilledPhearCostumeCavern  5 років тому

      Because of the structural integrity of the base, almost any thickness of wood an inch or more should be strong enough, as long as it is not plywood! Don't quote me on that, though. I'm only about 100 pounds soaking wet. If you're concerned, there are other tutorials out there about building metal stilts, which will definitely be stronger than wood.

    • @InstilledPhearCostumeCavern
      @InstilledPhearCostumeCavern  8 років тому +1

      +CheerfulCheddar I never quite finished the costume, but I did have a placeholder faun that I threw together for a Renaissance faire. When I completed the padding for the stilts, I used saran wrap and tape all up and down my legs, marked the direction I wanted the fur to go, and then cut it all off to create a custom pattern. Then all I did was trace the pattern pieces onto my fur, cut it out, and hot glue/sew everything together accordingly. (Take your time with that step if you want to make it look nice; you can definitely tell I did all of my furring in one night.)

After I created and attached the hooves to the bottom, I put on the stilts and just wrapped and taped it all up. Then I cut off that layer, and voila! A custom pattern to use to cut the fur! Everything from there is just hot glue, velcro, and some good old-fashioned hand-stitching.

The nylon insert lock nuts that I used for the pivot joint are my favorite part of the stilts because they have stayed in place for three years and still don't squeak. Is there anything specific you need help with?

    How much do your ankles hurt walking at that angle for a long time?

    • @InstilledPhearCostumeCavern
      @InstilledPhearCostumeCavern  7 років тому +5

      I didn't have many ankle problems, but my heels and toes could definitely feel it after a good hour or two. Make sure you use shoes that fit you well, otherwise blisters might happen!
      I would imagine that if a person were used to wearing high heels, stilts would be an easy transition because the angle is similar. I'm very much not used to high heels, so I need to build up to wearing these for longer periods of time.

    Many hours? How? Seriously, how did attaching a shoe and a couple metal brackets and and bungie cords take you "many hours"? Even if you weren't at all familiar with the tools you had to use(and given that you seem to be in some kind of classroom, like a welding or wood shop sort of class, so i doubt that is the reason) it shouldnt have taken an adult more than twi hours at the most. I don't mean to put your work down the look like theyll be decent stilts if you ever incorporate them into a costume, but they're a very simple design. You look pretty young but not young enough for sometgimg this simple to take hours.
    Shit like that kind of gets on my nerves, you did a good job, but you should have with a simple task like that. Its probably because of the shitty "everybody geta a trophy because you woke up and got out of bed today" attitude the entire fucking world seems to have adopted lately. God forbid somebody who doesnt bother to acheive anything noteworthy or impressive actually has to go home with out an equal ammount of praise and a trophy just the same as someone who makes a legimately impressive effort and acheives or creates something worth the worlds attention. And that just lowers the standards for everything, for everyone. Oh, you can't work because you're to depressed and youre anxiety is bad? Heres some drugs and a disability check, sit at home and we'll just send the daily trophies in the mail for managing to wake up amd fight your "condition". Dont forget to wear a t-shirt everyday expressing your battle with your "depression and anxiety" so everybody van know just how brave you are. Honestly, it seems like everybody just wants to makes sure everyone knows they're depressed, or bi-polar, or they have anxiety, or what the fuck ever else. People just live to consume thaf sweet sweet pity, claiming serious mental disorders and problems over feeling that every single person on this planet has. But no, their anxiety is abnormally high, they need that Xanax because they get nervous when going to a party, or when having toface any sort of conflict or difficulty. Everyonrs such a fucking snowflake anymore and its the evwryone gets a trophy shitty attitude people have. And look where thats gotten us to, people are just a bunch of entitled, lazy, pity consuming, failiures that think that instead of dealing with theyre own personal problems the world around them should have to accommodate them. Because its just so insensitive to tell someone to worm on solving theyre perso al issues with depression or anxiety or whatever, you should really just acknowledge theyre disability and then give them the pitu they desire. Validate the lazyness and lack of effort, ita ok to be a complete failure, because evem complete failures at life are 100% equal to people truly succeeding and making efforts to improve yhemselves in life.

      someone's projecting :/
      people like you get on my nerves. she never once acted like a snowflake and this is not an easy project, I bet that you couldn't complete a pair of decent digitigrade stilts. not everything comes easy to people, especially arts such as this. matter of fact, with your POV, I would expect you to be able to draw at my level which I know for a fact you cannot.

      Thanks for the laugh, Tim! I would be grumpy, too, if my head were that far up my ass. Allow me to teach you something. There is often a lot of trial-and-error when building complex items like digitigrade stilts without a blueprint. Since the whole project was done from scratch, frequent adjustments were made throughout in order to ensure proper balance and tension when wearing them. Safety was my top priority when I built these, thus the 'many hours.' Totally unreasonable, I know. How dare I?

      Do you get vertigo up there on your high horse? I'd believe it. Because nothing about this comment makes any sense. I think you needed to be angry somewhere so you chose this nice girl's video. That's pretty shitty of you, dude.
