Czeckie The fact that they are soldiers shouldn’t be what makes them a celebrity though. in about 5 years with the whole spacex tourism I see Destin himself up there filming and interviewing. Imagine how amazing that would be. The question is tho, would he do it? if he got the offer
@@Cyrribrae Yeah, Chris Hadfield (Canadian astronaut) has been an amazing ambassador for the space program in general (at least within English speaking countries, though being Canadian perhaps he's fluent in French as well? Unsure if he podcasts/vlogs in French though).
Man, this was so interesting. And I saw in one of the comments that Jonny had done another podcast with Jocko (who I had heard of, but didn't remember anything about). Saw a random comment about how his father abused his family and was ultimately shot by police in his house before Jonny enlisted. And I just finished listening to all 4 and a half hours of that interview. Wow. I take Jonny at his word when he says he's not the smartest or the strongest person, but he is certainly one of the most impressive. But he has both an intensity and a humility that shine through at all times. I was somewhat demotivated when I realize he's only a little older than me.. but seeing how he has approached overcoming obstacles from abuse to being shot at to medical school, I find it energizing to think that it's all about just setting one achievable goal at a time. Step by step by step. Even I can do that.
I think his confidence that he can accomplish anything... while still being so incredibly humble "a tadpole with big shoes to fill". That's quite a winning formula. Oh and of course the never ending drive to get it done.
Destin, I’ve been learning alongside you for many years. I’ve loved every video but this was, by far, the most impact your content has had on me. Beautiful work. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Hope to see you in the ISS someday.
Hey Destin, I really appreciate what you do. It's my job here in Huntsville to repair and stress test electronic equipment. (mostly for the Navy) I just work with the hardware but this video is a good reminder that real people rely on the work we do and that it matters. Thank you.
LMAO best comment by far. all i can see in my head when i hear the words “SNATCH BLOCK!” is that goofy expression on Destin’s face during that video and how hard i laughed when i first watched it 🤣
Lol, they are actually working on a drop pod technology, though the prototype versions would most definitely kill their occupants right now on the landing, haha. It's not the durability that's the problem, but trying to cancel out all of those Gs on impact, they may decide to just stick a small rocket booster on it, but then it might as well be like a modified lunar lander which could probably get shot down easily.
" sometimes it's easy to forget who you are, and the fact that you're an astronaut" pretty chill advice from the man itself. really important to always remember and feel who you are.
What incredible human beings Chris and Jonny are. I can see why Americans are so proud of their military and their country. Sadly here in the UK we seem to have lost both. What an awesome episode and not at all what I was expecting.
@CL CL I wasn’t talking just about military service in my comment, although that is service to all of us that benefit from the freedoms we enjoy as a result (I’m talking in the U.S. here). I am also talking about any type of service to others - volunteering at a homeless shelter or food bank, teachers who help our child learn, helping out neighbors after a storm. Those are also example of service to others.
One of the best segments you've ever produced in my estimation. The interviews and responses were thoughtful. The word "humble" is fitting indeed. What a remarkable bunch of people! I believe the pivotal aspect is the "service to others" perspective, one that it all too rare in today's world. Segments like these serve as a reminder and a challenge to each of us to try and purvey that perspective, that mission in our own lives. I know that in all too many instances I fail at that mission and I appreciate the gentle tap on the shoulder from people like you, which work to bring me back to center. (if you ever wonder whether you're making a difference, Destin, I assure you you are) As always, thanks so much for sharing. Wonderful job, sir! Steve
12:38 "Stop and smell the roses." Everyone should stop, take a breath and appreciate their life from time to time because no matter how bad you would have it, if you're alive and healthy everything is good.
@@uv-al To live is to suffer; Get over it as horrible as that may sounds it's just how things are. The sooner people wake up and realize those roses can hurt you the better.
Honestly, most people 16 and up should read those types of books. They need to learn history, the good and the bad, no sugar coating, as young as possible and appreciate what has been done for them.
I read that book in the 6thgrade and that's why I joined the US Marine Corps. It's exactly the kind of book young men should read nowadays. The amount of integrity, energy, commitment and dedication these men have is inconceivable to 98% of the population.
SUPERCAR GALAXY when I told my family I wanted to be a SEAL when I was 10 my grandfather, a Navy vet himself, gave me a couple spec ops books from all branches and said “read these and then decide if that’s still what you want to do”. It took the glamour out of it and put what they do into perspective. It didn’t change my mind but in-fact fueled me. However, shortly after I enlisted I was told I was partially color blind and I couldn’t do anything other than rescue swimmer in the spec ops community and since I didn’t have ANY other plans for my life I went ahead and went in as a seabee.
@@HickLif3 The seebees are great. I worked with a few seebees when I was an ironworker they were awesome to work with we had a great crew drank like fish when work was over then did it all again the next day. Rogue warrior was the other favorite book when I was in school.
Could you imagine being Jonny Kim's brother? "Why can't you be like your brother?" An elite decorated soldier, combat medic, medical doctor, and astronaut. To surpass him would require someone to cure cancer *and* defeat an alien invasion.
Unfortunately Kim's father was an abuser.. who eventually threatened his own family with a gun and was shot to death by police in their home. I don't think 'why can't you be like your brother' is something they worried about with that kind of parent.

Confirmation bias. When two events happen sufficiently close to each other (in time) it's natural for your mind to establish some kind of link between the two. There isn't one.
four boys discuss what they want to be when they grow up. one wants to be a navy seal, the second an astronaut, the third a doctor. when they ask the fourth, he says: 'i don't know, but your choices all sound good'.
Being 50 in a profession where most people burn out in their 30's, tells you all you need to know about him. He's not only seen a few things, he's done them, and lived to do it another day. Jocko Willink's interview with Dr. Kim was very deep. The stuff that Dr. Kim went through growing up before he became a SEAL is amazing. I highly recommend listening to that interview.
Didnt know it existed. Thank you for bringing it up!!
Thanks for the heads up. Will check it out for sure. What a remarkable man.
Where can i find it?
It’s episode 221 of Jocko’s podcast for anyone interested. Going to listen to it now. (Well, I’ll listen this week. That episode is 4+ hours long.) Thanks for the heads-up. Cheers.
@@parklloyd6690 Thanks for including that info. I'm sorry I forgot that part. Dr. Kim talks about his childhood and wanting to become a SEAL, BUDs training, being deployed, and going to Harvard. The time goes by fast though because the stories are so good and they both are great speakers.
These are he kind of celebrities I want my kids to watch. Your access to these individuals is amazing.
Czeckie The fact that they are soldiers shouldn’t be what makes them a celebrity though. The way they live their lives and the enduring philosophy of service to others while excelling at their chosen profession should be the attributes that we elevate as examples to inspire others. These are great men who happen to be soldiers.
You want them to idolize drug users when they preach against it
Jonny Kim is incredible, not just for what he's achieved but what he had to go through to get there. Dude's an inspiration.
I was just scrolling and I suddenly saw “navy seal astronauts” and was like, I HAVE TO SEE THIS.

Navy Seal Astronauts?
Space Rangers!!
Go go space rangers?
No space marines.

If you've played call of duty: modern warfare 2 , the hostage rescue mission in the arctic oil rig, they use the Seal delivery vehicle to get to the oil rig from the submarine. The beginning of it was amazing, as a young kid playing it, it felt like I was a navy seal so when cassidy mentioned it, I got so excited man
And the level's name is the SEALs motto itself.
“Service to others is a sustainable way of living”
It’s amazing how so many different people walk through life is such different ways to wind up at the same beautiful truth. Love each other, and keep getting smarter every day ❤️
Well said.
in about 5 years with the whole spacex tourism I see Destin himself up there filming and interviewing. Imagine how amazing that would be. The question is tho, would he do it? if he got the offer
Probably more like 35 years. But it's coming!
Obviously he would. Won't happen though
Considering Destin frequently applies to the astronaut program? Yes.
When I read "Navy SEAL astronauts" I thought the US was training soldiers for special operations in space. Boy was I wrong.

Well. But astronauts who have gone to space have already been youtubers.. so...

@@Cyrribrae Yeah, Chris Hadfield (Canadian astronaut) has been an amazing ambassador for the space program in general (at least within English speaking countries, though being Canadian perhaps he's fluent in French as well? Unsure if he podcasts/vlogs in French though).
He better be. Tim Dodd is cool, but Destin should get the first slot.
My asian parents: Become a doctor...
Other asian kid: Navy SEAL, Doctor and Astronaut

Each of the SEALs you were near are a testament to examining, clarifying, and living by your values.
What incredible human beings Chris and Jonny are. I can see why Americans are so proud of their military and their country. Sadly here in the UK we seem to have lost both. What an awesome episode and not at all what I was expecting.
I like Chris a lot. He’s smart and humble. Thanks for sharing this with us and reminding us that service to others makes us better humans. 🤗❤️🌎🌍🌏

(if you ever wonder whether you're making a difference, Destin, I assure you you are)
As always, thanks so much for sharing. Wonderful job, sir!

"I only recommend this book for adults"
26yo me: Oh G, i shouldn't read it.
"Service to others is Sustainable Way of Living" --- thats hit me...
As always destin with his overwhelmingly interesting content...
Stay safe out there..
