My dad was friends with Yoo Jae Ha's older sister in college and always bought Yoo Jae Ha bread when Yoo Jae Ha was a little kid. His older sister sent my dad one of the first copies of her little brother's album to my dad, and I'm still holding onto it dearly. RIP
It continues to blind kpop fans today who think debuting singers need to follow a certain formula. Many play it safe, but only few are truly influential, creative artists.
I just went for a quick search and wow. Winners of the Yoo Jae-ha music contest include You Hee-yeol, Kim Yeon-woo, and Bang Si-hyuk. Bang PD. I'm so shocked!
As someone who has always been interested in the history of the music industry, but has always found just a lot of content about the US/UK side of it and not that much about the rest of the world, this series is truly becoming my favorite one video after video
Look up some jamaican reggae music history. Its enthralling. Some of our music today has taken notes here and there from it. French music is another good one too.
Hello everyone, I recently discovered that I am a distant relative of Yoo Jae-ha, a famous Korean singer. My parents mentioned that my dad's uncle was a renowned artist, but I didn't believe it until I looked it up. Although I never met him or attended his funeral (I wasn't born yet), learning about him has deeply touched my heart and made me grieve. It's incredibly meaningful to see how influential he was and how he helped shape the K-pop industry. I want to thank everyone who has created videos and shared memories of my great uncle. Your tributes mean a lot to me and my family. Thank you.
Sad and yet triumphant . . . you have to wonder, had he not had that fatal accident would his work even be recognised today? Like great artists through time, they are not appreciated until they are gone. Thank you for this, Danny. 💝
I think it would have been recognized eventually, maybe within an year or two cause of how revolutionary it was. He died only 3 months after his first album release, so, is "not appreciated until they're gone" really applicable in this case?
It’s so unfair. Reminds me of Van Gogh never selling a painting in his lifetime. Although I don’t really believe in an afterlife people like this make you want to believe so badly that somehow they get to know they have been appreciated and loved.
thank you for introducing my life hero, when I was 14.. walking the streets of london feeling like a lone teenager and being comforted to this song. please introduce kim kwang seok. i always wish everyone knows them, and kim hyun sik too.
I love when you guys make videos about older Korean music. I've always been interested in older music (mostly because its what my dad would listen to) but it's so interesting to see what shaped the music that there is today. :)
I used to love the song "Gloomy Letter" from Verbal Jint but I had no idea it was a cover! Thanks for the history, I have to listen to the full album now
Yoo Jae-ha was born in 1962, and in his 20s, he wrote and composed the first album (eight songs) myself He died in a car accident when he was 25 years old. Every song is a masterpiece Yoo Jae-ha is the respect and idol of many Korean singers.
I was crying while watching this. He wasn’t given the proper recognition he so deserved while still alive. Because I love you, because I love this song so much despite not being Korean.❤️
I heard his song in drama Radio Romance and loved his song 'The covered up road' so much The lyrics are so good 🥺 He will always be outstanding singer-songwriter

Trot was a genre or expression of Russian folk or popular music from the late 19th or early 20th century, which was introduced to Japan and was renamed Enka. Korea accepted it from Japan and called it Trot. In modern Korea, referring to traditional Korean songs and trot shows confusion, and strictly speaking, Korean traditional folk songs and Trot differ a lot in form. The word 'Pongki' comes from the subtraction of the characteristic rhythm of the trot called 'pong-jjak'. In modern Korea, the trot is gaining huge popularity and forms the mainstream genre of adult contemporary. The tragedy of modern history that Koreans had through the fall of the kingdom and the colonial and civil wars has made this genre, which has maximized popularity such as exaggerated sadness, become the mainstream. In this process, various musical characteristics such as real Korean folk songs and other Western songs were mixed. The trot's melody reflects a unique singing technique by bending the melody. For more than 30 years since Yoo Jae-ha in 1987, younger musicians in Korea have always tried to break away from these trot attributes and make them feel cleaner. However, one of the most modern characteristics of kpop is that it has a dramatic melody compared to pop in the West, which also shows that it is not free from the influence of 'Pongki'. Yoo Jae-ha's music is not only free from the Russian-Japanese-style folk music element of trot, but also creatively incorporates the harmonics of Western classical music and various modern jazz, rock, and pop techniques. This method was unique in the Western pop of the time, and its musical quality was excellent. In addition, in terms of lyrics and singing attitude, he is considered to have rediscovered the attitude of traditional Korean art, "Aibulbi (sad but not tragic), which was known to all Koreans, and established it in a modern way. Many Koreans regard Yoo Jae-ha as the true musical independence of KPOP.
Wow. Well researched. This was mind blowing interesting, as I see a lot of ballad singers with similar style - half classical/half pop. He has definitely made a huge impact on Korean Pop.
Thank you so much for sharing a part of Korean music. Love watching videos like this, and can I just say that the way your conviction and knowledge comes across is truly refreshing and inspiring. Well done!!! Bravo!!
I like these videos. They are good for people who want to be knowledgeable about the broader picture but don’t have access to the culture to know what used to be popular
i came here because of rose of blackpink.. when she cried after singing this song.. i know this meaning something more of him.. now i know and thank you for this video.
Thank you for this video. I knew Yoo JaeHa’s song Because I Love You (one of my favourite korean songs) but didn’t know about his story. I really hope to see more this type of videos on this channel. Thanks to it, we international fans can get to know more about korean music and popculture. And indeed, Korea has a really amazing musicians in their music history that deserves to be known more by younger generations.
..because i love you..one of my fave korean songs..i can't count anymore how many times this song made me cry while listening..other songs from the album was also a masterpiece..if he doesn't died early..for sure he got to release many more legendary songs..
Just 24 years old 🥺. I wonder if he was still alive today, what influence his music would have. Would he also have grown & change etc. Thank you Danny for bringing our attention to some 'history' of Korean music. This vid was great. It was unbiased & not opinionated, just facts. This album is history no doubt, its so sentimental and sincere. My favourite has to be the “hidden road” despite everyones favourite “because i love you”.
Yoo Jae ha was gave me a new tasted of music, I’ve been listened classic american, Europe or any other music. But, however Yoo Jae Ha made me influental pop ballad.

What a fascinating video Danny! It made me feel nostalgic for a time I wasn't even around to experience! I just downloaded his album on Spotify, I will play on my way to and from work today! Thank you for introducing me to a new artist! -Much love.
A fascinating review. That song sounded like what I consider a typical ballad. So interesting that he left such a lasting touch on Korean music with just one album. Hmm, could you consider 'Cherry Blossom Ending' to have 뽕기? It's one of my favorite songs and I always thought Jang Beom-Jun had this really 80s-era way of singing.
All this time I thought he's popular during his time since there's a lot of idols covering his songs until I watched this video, this is very informative. Just sharing tho but my favorite song of him is "You in my arms" give it a listen too.
Thank for this video. Very well done. You skillfully draw attention to this singer songwriter who wouldn't be known in other parts of the world if it weren't for this video. You give great examples, have great footage and photos, and tell a compelling story.
You guys are the only one who tell this warmest magical way story of Yoo Jae-Ha. Great job. I know Yoo Jae-Ha because of Memories of Murder by Dir Bong, till i found other title such as "because i love u".
Oh i recognize one of this song through a cover from a Drama I watched called my mister. Its one of my favorites. I really want to watch a video about Korean legendary singers.
his life is like a real life kdrama... also, bbong-kki feels like some 80s style nostalgia music, not necessarily the good type of nostalgia, bit more cringy... interesting. sometimes, when i listen to different k-music (diff from what i like, just to give it a go, for curiosity sake), it feels like 80-90s western-style music. is it just me?
I think I know exactly what you mean by bbong kki. I listen to a lot of country and folksy music and blues and all that stuff and it has the same sort of feel as that in the vocals. Don't know if you or any other subscribers listen to the same sort of stuff but it's similar. I don't think we really have a word for it though in English as I've never heard anyone from those genres really describe it but it's there.
Rose brought me here. She covered Because I Love You and all of a sudden I wanted to know who the original singer was. This song truly is a masterpiece. And this is one of the best educational videos on UA-cam! Thank you so much💙
Is it just me or does he actually sound way better live than on the studio recordings - like WAY better ?? I think this is the first time I've encountered something like that (at least to this extent)
Hi, Danny ! Thank you , because today you gave me the name of the man who composed this last song which I liked a lot not knowing even when and where I've listened it ! And this style which me, in my 'neofit' mind , called the "Korean style during the students' revolts ! I'm not a musician but still can recognize something pure-deep -melancholic ! And there is another style characteristic to the Japanese occupation that I noticed ! You know, sometimes I'm thinking to the old Russian songs which I use to love like my old roots ! Thanks!
Mark sang this in his As We Wish video bcs his dad sang this too when he proposed. I knew it sounds familiar, it’s because I saw it here first! Thank you Danny!
It is so informative for everyone who want to deep dive into kpop landscape, let me add something to be corrected here, "ppogki" presented here as samples isn't correct, ppogki is kind of skills that are used to make a nasal sound with high note, which was very common in "Trot"(very traditional folk song genre that was popular both in Korea and Japan, originally from American pop music in around 40's). and please don't miss that Bang Si hyuck, father of BTS attended in 유재하 song festival before he debuted as a professional songwriter and producer.
This was sad! Why after a person passes away do their albums sell out and audiences listen! So he never got to see how his song inspired his beloved nation? Hopefully he did!!
Yoo Jae ha's music was released in 1987, More than any music, it is sophisticated, and the lyrics are so beautiful he wrote these lyrics in my early 20s.
Please make a video on Shin Hae Chul please? I've been listening to his music lately and the guy is a genius! Would be nice if we get to know more about him from just what's on his Wikipedia page
Ohh! I only knew of "Because I Love You" just recently, because Daehwi of AB6IX sang it.. I thought it was a really beautiful song.. But I didn't know the singer and album had such history 😢❤️
Really appreciate your effort to produce this kind of video, informative and interesting. I love this song very much and also curious about the late Yoo Jaeha because there were not much articles about him in English.
I heard about Yoo Jae Ha from the likes of Youngbae and I saw his cover in ig, which is ~beautiful~. Anyways don't mind me, I'm just here to get my kpop history juice.

Right,, especially people that stick behind one specific genre and shit on others?
