I have a 1947 MEC M-192-5 (Pre Magnatone) amplifier that uses Octal Tubes for the Preamp Section. Its a 15W combo with a 12" speaker, its a great sounding amp that still kicks it with authority out all these years later. Great Content, Thank You Mike.
I love Dr Z he's one of the only amp manufacturers that's not just rehashing the same ol crap and reissues or takes on the top Big 3 amp types ! The dude is awesome
This sounds great. I love watching Dr. Z's videos and just listening to him talk about amps. He's super knowledgeable and passionate about his craft. They're without a doubt the best amps ever designed by a drummer, lol. I hope to own one someday.
Cool sounding amp. I have an old RCA tube console amp from the 50's that I've contemplated having converted to a guitar amp for a while. I think it's time !!!
Want to try this. I LOVE 7591 tubes. Have them in my 65 Amps Stone Pony and a special Satellite Amps proto. 6SL7s are super cool too. Have them in two BC Audio amps. They have a big fat and warm tone and almost sound like a power tube overdriven. I need to check this Z out! Great vid Mike!
We love the experimental nature of Dr. Z! Great demo, always good to see somebody pull out those tubes! (Techs I’m sure were horrified) and great playing too! Good advice to not put this amp on 10! The Dr. Zs are always sound louder than you think. (Personal experience)
As always very impressed with your talent! Would love to see how you mic your cab and set the mic pre. Your guitars always sound fantastic. I can't seem to get them to sound great. :)
We were poor when I grew up. My grandfather had an old B&H 16mm projector. It had a mic input, and I used it for my very first amp. 😂 I plugged in my $15 pawnshop cobra telecaster, and I was off to the races.
@@marmaladecreammedia everyone used Marshall amps back then. You get sucked into the branding thing. I worked my butt off as a 13-15 YO and got a Marshall. My uncle’s family still has the B&H.
Dr Z does some crazy wild stuff. I had never played an EF86 amp until I got my MkII Z28 and man, that thing EATS pedals like they're part of the amp!!!
The standout for me is it sounds more vintage than new which is a good thing, plus has excellent sustain. Decent demo MN but wished you had demoed the Master V at levels besides just 9 o’clock.
the 7591 power tubes really brings a new dimension to these octal tubes by supply the full output bandwidth they are capable of generating. In the first prototype, Joe Walsh suggested 6V6s (like your BR9), but we found the octals really overwhelmed them. In comes the 7591 which has exceptional headroom and input sensitivity. It was first made available to market in 1960.
@@DrZAmplification Interesting my VT22 V4 uses 7027A power tubes ,different tube but just as versatile im sure ,they seem to be able to take the higher voltage very well
I'd like a reissue of the Metasonix Fucking Fucker amp. Unlike most guitar amps, Eric Barbour looked at an amp circuit and made almost every single circuit of the amp tube based. That gives that amp about 21 tubes. The also needs a secondary power supply to turn on and runs so hot, it shuts down every 2 hours.
@0421072 then Glen is plain wrong. I have tried many brands of tubes for replacement, side-by-side, and I can absolutely assure you that there is a very discernible difference. In some cases it’s absolutely night and day. Just because this guy doesn’t have the ears to hear it, or the skilled guitar player’s nuance to feel it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there.
I dig Dr Z and will definitely try this amp. The Z-28 is killer. Btw, the Komet Constellation 30 as well several Alessandro amps used octal preamp tubes and were in production in this century. 😉
It is already difficult to get good tubes at a reasonable price and in a timely way. I will not say these sound bad. The point is they do not sound better so why would you buy an amp that uses them??? The day I come on this channel and all the other amps are gone will be the day to reconsider them. That day is NOT going to happen. For decades 99% of what stays around is determined by it supporting by simply modifying what went before. Yes there is always a niche market for other things. Even so those other things have a very short shelf life. All music products should have a mandatory 'Best Before' date on the box they come in. 😇
Define "these do not sound better" ....... I say this because that may be how YOU feel about them, but sound and inspiration are hideously subjective, and subject to all manner of things like your touch, your skill, your rig, guitars etc etc. I would say use caution on making absolute statements that involve subjectivity.
Amazing JAM, Michael. Love when you dig in and push the amp into compression. Joe would be proud to hear it.

At 3:47 "An effects loop, WHOOOOAAAAHH" Lol. Feel the same way!
Wow, it does sound really really great. I loved the tone with the Tele

In my experience any old tube amp or tube radio will do just fine as a guitar amp.
Way to go Mike. Super quality all the way through

Seems like a great blend vintage voicing but with modern gain levels. I would probably love one of these.
That amp loves your tele guitars 😉
Different, but awesome is the best description for this amp. Pretty sweet!
Octals! Was just having this conversation today. My old Jet is 6sn7 cathode biased. Was going to try an adapter to hear 12ax in it. Great video man.
Ampeg and Audio Guild used the 7591. Ampeg also used octal preamp tubes for a time. I used to own a Frenzel amp with the 6sl7/6sn7 combination.

It's an all day, every day sound. Very nice.
Dr Z is closeby to me....really a cool operation they have!🎸

Turns out those projector amps make badass guitar amps!

Tasty Stuff Dr N!
Sounds like an amp Peter Stroud would use. Very cool!
It was good to hear you move outside your traditional wheelhouse (the channel's wheelhouse).
Love the tone. Little different but very cool
That's a very cool amp i love the tone its reslly nice!

Just got a case of GE RCA Sylvania and some others but I only found one EL84. I was going to give them away but now I think I’ll do some research.
Ah yes… the Doctor N ‘Rectal Six’ 🤔😳😏😂🤣

I agree I think a range of mv settings would have been helpful as the tone stack and loop might react differently.
0:44 Doctor Who!!!!! love it!!!
Certainly unique and pretty heavy
Very Similar to the Gibson BR9 Amp circuit that I have from 1948 but with some much needed tone controls that he added on

@@joemcgraw5529 yes, those V4s have a very high plate voltage which requires the use of the 7027
Octal is awesome.
I think he should make a Doctor NZ. 🤣🤣🤣 Great Amp! Reminded me of really early ZZTop.

Is that Joe Walsh I’m seeing ??!!
Great licks
He may have made it in conjunction with Joe Walsh but this is a Ron Wood amp all day long.
Don't let Glenn Fricker see this video. He'll start his rant about how tubes don't matter.
Fricker is an amazing guitarist.
Like Rainman is an excellent driver.
Every time I see a Fricker video pop up on my feed I report it as AI spam bot.
Guy is such a clickbait clown
Who cares? Frick him.

Same thing, these are just older tube models with less gain.
Are you reading the dictionary?
You like to break a mental sweat too.
me simple man. me hear nice sound. me like. me satisfied. me no care about funny numbers.
🤘
Don't know what it is specifically, but some quality in the top end is not for me. Seems like it would kill in a country twangy setting
🤘😎🤘

It does sound like Joe Walsh when you play alone on a LP. Thin and plonky. Typical JW when playing the Strat.
you HAVE to check out BC Audio amps he uses octal tubes to great sucess
Check out BC Audio for the same general idea

oh ok, thanks
Until you've played an Octal Six in person, you shouldn't offer an opinion. Believe me, those tubes make a major difference in tone vs other tubes.
