honestly? I'm a "COHA" and so this definitely feels more relatable to me. I was lucky in that my hearie parents learned sign early on just for me, but there were definitely other family members who didn't want to and didn't understand why they had to if they wanted to be in my life. and then they wonder why I prefer to stick with people who actually speak my lanague over spending time with family members.
When I worked retail in a huge grocery chain, let’s call it dooramart, there was a deaf customer that would always come find me for help because I knew enough ASL that I could understand him and either find what he asked for myself or translated to other associates what he wanted. My manager walked up to me one day while Inwas signing with him and gave me this weird look, after the guy left I was pulled aside. My manager asked “what the heck were you doing flapping around like that, it’s not ok to make fun of handicapped people” I honestly wanted to slap the man repeatedly and tried explaining that I wasn’t making fun of anyone and had been helping this guy whenever he came in during my shift for 6 months or so because I could talk (meaning sign) to him instead of making him pull out a paper and pen. When I told that manager I had been around signing all my life and was using asl his brilliant response was “But I thought you could hear”, it took every ounce of self control I had to not smash my head into the desk. I will never understand why some hearing people think sign is reserved for the deaf /hard of hearing community only and that it’s offensive/rude for a hearing person to use it.
Hilarious story! 😀 But this hasn't anything to do with reasoning. It's like the people who ask you if you can read and write braille since you are deaf. It's just a fail. When they realize how dumb their question was they have to laugh. At least that's my experience.
I agree! I grew up thought, " Why don't we have a name for Deaf child of hearing adult? " because it seems common at my school.
If this was actual movie, I would watch it for sure!!
Yes me too want see too 😁
I am interested
