Akky & Akky2 are brilliant for souvenirs to take home. Mandarake usually has some hidden gems in. I always go to that little hidden shrine as it’s so peaceful. Also managed to find a Airsoft place as couple of streets behind the Main Street which was awesome fun.

Akihabara is one of the best places in Tokyo in my opinion. It is important to mention that many older games that you can buy there can have Japanese as the only language option. Also, many older consoles or home appliances can work only with the Japanese electric grid, so you need a transformer (not an adapter!) in order to use those.

I spent 1.5 days in Akihabara in my recent trip and it was not enough lol. There is so much to explore in every shop. I spent so many hours in there that I gave my brother (who was traveling with me) the pocket wifi and told him to go do whatever he wants and meet me back in a few hours 😂I wish I could have spent more time there! To add to your recommendations: Mandarake has alot of cool stuff as well, but they have other branches in other cities. K books and Amiami are also nice stores with a bunch of anime/gacha games merch (got alot of hololive stuff from there). Animate also has some anime merch but it is more for mainstream anime. Tamashi Nations also has high quality figures but is expensive. I have found Radio Kaikan/Astop to be the best places to get figures in my opinion.

The pre-owned/retro stores in Japan are heaven for me. I sometimes even buy broken stuff there because I know I can fix them. Bought a ton of games recently at awesome prices and have been having lots of fun

Hi Nathan. I just came back yesterday to my home country after a big 2 week adventure in Japan. I just wanted to say a massive thankyou for your videos! I stayed in Ueno, as per your suggestion, and it was absolutely amazing. I was a bit nervous about staying in Tokyo as I'm a real country boy, but it was so green and peaceful in Ueno. I also loved that it was only a short walk to Akihabara, so it was the perfect spot for me. Also your video on Japanese language that you did with Oriental Pearl was massively helpful. I was really struggling on where to start, so that video made a world of difference for me. I used those phrases a lot. Knowing some japanese really saved me in a lot of awkward situations 😅.

I've explored Akihabara for days since I last stayed in Asakusabashi. I have more solo plans for Japan next year. More cities and more hotels.
Also go to a Book Off for used games.

I stayed right next to the station, which was an amazing location. Walked to Donki at 1am in the morning no crowd and really peaceful at that time xD. Not staying there this coming trip but it was a nice area to enjoy as I went to the crane game locations many times over. Also walked to that Vending Machine corner, was sad to see so much trash around them but it was amusing especially the mystery boxes.

Was just in Tokyo for about 9 days total and spent the second half at the JR East hotel attached to the station. Fun area and worth noting there are backups of everything. If you enjoy Yodobashi (fun place) you can also go to BIC Camera as the most comparable, or Edion which was a bit lower quality. For the anime figure places it's also worth noting they seem to have wildly varying prices between stores, though I'm presuming many offerings are also open box. To some extent this can make the area boring if you don't enjoy the culture, but I find it very interesting to explore.
A totally random for the area recommendation is the Juice Bar (that's the name) located on one of the main roads leading up towards Ueno (a few blocks passed the Don Quijote and Strawberry Fetish stores). Everything at the juice bar was nice, but I personally really enjoyed their Kiwi juice.

Another informative videos. I keep thinking one of these days I need to make my own list of the top 50 or 100 things to do in Akihabara.
Great to see you visited Hanabusa Inari shrine. That's a good way to get past just the surface level of Akihabara.
It's worth noting that the more established maid cafes don't have touts standing out on the main street or Maid Road. In fact many of the touts are actually from bars with pricey "all-you-can-drink" plans and confusing price systems that can wind up costing a lot of money.
The creepy vending machine corner can be disappointing if you think of it as a place to go shopping. I usually wind up visiting multiple times on a trip, and it's more of a mystery to be contemplated. What's the background story? Why are there signs with paranoid warning? Who runs it and picks all the strange items? What's with the boxes wrapped in bizarre short stories? Is it some sort of art installation? There used to be a sign on it that said "Takumi Lining" so at one point it was part of the surrounding button and lining district, so it's a mystery how it changed into what it is now.

    • @NinjaMonkeyguy

I had an accidental visit to Akihabara in September 2019. My shinkansen from Atami to Tokyo ran an hour late due to typhoon Faxai and when I got to Tokyo station to transfer to the shinkansen to Niigata all of the departure update screens were blank becuase the lines still needed to be cleared. So I got on a local train to Akihabara and walked around amazed. An unplanned and unexpected surprise and a very memorable day!

We just spent half a day in Akihabara yesterday and then headed to Asakusa in the late afternoon
I found a store where they still sell discrete electronic parts. I believe that is what Akihabara used to be. Now it seems is mostly about video games and anime.
I was expecting more from Mabdarake. It was disappointing. There is this place right in front of the JR Station with 10 or 12 floors (Radio kaikan). That was the best place we found.
I did find it troubling all the maid cafe advertising going on. You just wonder why all these young girls and boys are there rather than on jobs where they can develop their real skills...
BTW, I am writing this right next to the fountain in ikebukuro Sunshine City
