    To add some perspective, Ford charged my neighbor $8000.00 to replace the rusted out oil pan on his 2 year old diesel F-250. Warranty was denied as Ford said he didn't wash it enough. He was a lifelong Ford customer, also still has a gas F-150. Now he has a day 2 Cybertruck order.

      @@victorblock3421 They claimed it was because they have to pull the engine to change the oil pan on the F-250 diesel. Crazy stupid design and apparently it was a common problem at the time. Seems now they've switched to a fiber reinforced plastic pan. Go figure.

    There's a Tesla battery repair service available from Gruber Motors in Arizona. They say they can open up a non-functional Tesla battery pack, identify which individual cells have failed or are performing poorly, replace them, and then assure the operation of the pack. Apparently it's common to spend $5000 to do this instead of spending $20000 for a new pack. I think lots of similar service companies will pop up to do this, and they'll handle Ford Lightning pickup trucks as well, very soon.

    There are so many battery startups it can make your head spin! If I had a battery pack that needed replacement, I would take it to them first. Not every cell is failing and the pack could probably be reconditioned. If not, it's easily rebuilt with cheaper recycled batteries. The future is bright!

It's not necessary that the lightning is good for traveling, the problem is our infrastructure. Without working chargers and plenty of them You'll most likely gave what they call range anxiety. I use my platinum local only & charge at home, so even slow charging is just fine.

    My F150 is a 2003 Lariat model which makes it 20 years old, and it still has a huge amount of life left. It has always been garaged so the body is 100% and mechanically it feels like it will go on forever. The running costs have been minimal but.... it is a gas-hog of note. (5.4L V8)
    The big question is 'How long is the factory warranty?'
    Got an idea?

    The lightnings battery consists of several individual cells that can be replaced. And with an 8 year 100,000 warranty I expect to see the replacement battery after warranty will be much cheaper. Can you image the number of EV's on the road in 8 years. I drive mine locally and charge to 80-85% using the vehicle's mobile charger. So I expect my battery to last much longer than 8 years. I drive about 150 miles a week so it'll take me a little more than 12 years to put 100,000 miles on it. And even then I may only need a module replaced.

  • @richardgoldsmith7278
    @richardgoldsmith7278 Рік тому +2

    Odds of having a manufacturing fault develop outside the warranty period is infinitessimal. Replacing due to ageing is unlikely as it would be more advantageous to put up with the range loss or sell and replace with new if you need the full range.
    There will be battery repair shops in due course (unless Model Y structural pack with that pink foam) where module swap is more realistic and even module refurbish with individual cell replacement. So any discussion about the off the shelf price of a whole pack will be unrealistic and artificially expensive.

    We are familiar with how ICE vehicles age but have no idea how EVs age. How common are battery failures? The switch to EVs may have a strong/ harsh economic impact on those of us who can't easily afford a battery replacement. I don't believe we fully know what we are getting ourselves into at this point in time.

    The warranty period should be at least the normal number of years Americans keep a car. I think the cost of replacing the battery will will drop and aftermarket batteries will be available at some point and those will also be newer technology. Also keep in mind if it’s just decreased range you can still use the vehicle and just change it more often. If an engine or transmission fails your range drops to zero and stays there until you fix it.

Until the charging infrastructure is brought up to a level where you can depend on the chargers and there's always one available when you need one, I don't believe there'll be that many people taking them on road trips. Notice the adds for GM and Ford are aimed at recreational use by rich people not the working person or company / Government fleet . Just imagine when not if they have a spate of battery problems ( or charging caused problems ) that Porshe has . Look at Porshe sales now . Ford has a huge quality problem , more than twice the recall and warranty rate of GM per vehicle . GM may have learnt from the fires and problems over the year withe the " Bolt / Volt " , but i doubt it . The Recession is here and next year you will see a dramatic drop off in sales of cars as unemployment hits middle class and to some extent middle management, this is the marketplace these are aimed at .Think about it house closing are down 28% year over year ( October to october ) and falling . Car sales cratered around the GFC and every other recession . Manufactures then offered HUGE discounts to keep sale from falling off a cliff , but that was not when interest rates were rising like they are now . .

      $82,705 dollars for the 7.2kW power onboard, which makes it a hybrid with its package and gives the electronic axle. There is a 360 camera and onboard scales. The camera requires a tow package for some unknown reason, and you have to have the max towing package as well. There is also the double moonroof. I added the running boards to the Lightning because you get that on the Platinum, which makes it $98,474. The F-350 Platinum is $87k, but it doesn't have the features of any of the Lightning trims at all. By the way, if you say you do not want some of the features, then you said you do not want a Lightning Platinum. That doesn't change the motors or axle at all on any of the trims. The towing capacity comes from the extended range battery pack having a higher voltage to supply more power to the motors. No, the F-150 Platinum trim is not $30,000 less. It starts at $30,000 less and has almost none of the features in the trim. If you want to complain that the extended range battery pack has an equipment feature attached to it, that would be fair as it extremely changes the pricing on all the trims beyond the battery pack change itself. By the way, no "normal" person is going to buy the Platinum trim on anything. I do not believe that any "normal" person would be buying the extended range battery pack with an equipment group add-on as it changes the price by about $20,000. By the way, everyone keeps saying that range is everything, but the standard battery pack looks fine to me.

    As the car leaves the battery warranty, the resale value will fall like a rock since the battery is subject to replacement.
    Will the F150 extended range drop the $36,000 after the battery warranty?
    Who knows but buying a used F150 and knowing that next week I might have to pay $36,000 will make them undesirable compared to an ICE version.

      EVs will suffer what is called infant death. All electronics do. Warranty covers this. Once one gets past where that is likely to happen; changes are the EV battery will still have 70% range with 200K or 300K miles on it. At that point some guy buys it who is fine with 70% of the original range.

    What this story, and a previous one about a Polestar battery replacement, says to me is that low cost detachment and replacement of battery packs will quickly become a necessity (and perhaps even a mandated requirement) if EVs are going to deliver on the hope of making our lives better. Risking replacement or repair costs of that order isn't something that can work. If a battery dies and the car owner can't afford to have it replaced then they can only sell the car as scrap and that kills the car market itself because being impoverished/bankrupted as a consequence of a faulty consumer good isn't something that is supposed to follow from the purchase of such a good. This is also not a problem that insurance can fix. Not only because premiums would be astronomical, making car ownership a rich person's game or more likely causing more buyers to forgo purchases or even more likely compelling buyers, in practice, to take the risk of being uninsured. Does that sound like a normal car market to you?
    NIO, Vinfast and CATL seem to have given this more thought that others (and absurdly have been criticised for it). Only heavy standardisation - mechanical and electrical - of detachable/replacable battery packs will move things in the right direction and special terms must attach to battery failure, namely, a) the obligation to rapidly replace a failed battery and return a vehicle to normal service, and b) the obligation for the replacement to be zero rated where compensating offset arrangements, for instance, the Vinfast battery 'lease', have been agreed.

      There is another HUGE elephant in the room which everyone conveniently forgets/ignores.
      The charging infrastructure is miniscule compared to the number of gas stations.
      What this means in reality is that unlike when you are driving a gas-powered car where you start looking for a filling station when you have about 50 miles of range left, you can't do that in an EV. You are limited to where there is a charging station WITHIN YOUR RANGE. In practice you may be compelled to recharge you EV when you may still have 50% (or more) of your range left due to the location of charging stations on your route. This will eventually improve as charging stations become more plentiful but for now, this is still not the case.

    • @greggrant4614
      @greggrant4614 Рік тому +1

      When going on longer trips, you would simply charge to 100% state-of-charge (SOC) before you take off. Additionally, on your longer trips, you would "plan" in advance to coordinate your pit-stops for a bite to eat, etc., with recharging stops. Software built-in/onboard or on your cell phone (e.g., "A Better Route Planner") would help you plan your pit-stops accordingly, to very simply minimize time spent recharging, while minimizing the cost to recharge, effectively managing your battery's SOC by setting a minimum and maximum SOC to best achieve your objectives, including the objective of maximizing your battery's durability/life.

    • @greggrant4614
      @greggrant4614 Рік тому +1

      @@robhawthorne6892 Generally, any battery will utilize its "surface" charge first, when it is first called upon to power the vehicle's acceleration, and this surface charge capacity is readily available for storing the energy from regen braking. So, you should not lose the regen braking energy in most cases. However, if you are starting at the top of a hill, then it's wise not to have charged to 100% (e.g. charging instead to 80% or 90% might be best in this case), so your battery can most readily adsorb the regen braking energy on the downslope. Likewise, you might do best for braking energy recovery to charge to 80% as a rule, rather than 100%, unless you are heading out on a longer trip (that doesn't start high up in the mountains).

    • @alexd302
      @alexd302 Рік тому

      @@greggrant4614 You completely miss the point of my comment. It doesn't matter what level you charge to. My Model 3 at 100% charge gives me about 300 miles (they 'claim', but not in reality). No ways can I drive till there is only 50 miles range left and expect to be able to find a 'filling station' as I could if I were driving a gas car. My Tesla tells me where I need to stop and recharge and sometimes, I still have 150 miles (or even more) range left. You would never fill up a gas car on a road trip when it still had over 1/2 tank left. Don't give me the bs about pee break and stretching legs etc. YOU HAVE NO CHOICE - plain and simple! A road trip in an EV requires probably double the number of stops and recharging takes far longer than filling a tank of gas. If you don't have access to Tesla's super-charger network, you run the risk of finding broken chargers so that could leave you in serious trouble.
      I own a Tesla and love my car, but I am not blind to the short comings. The other HUGE negative is that they can't tow, or correctly phrased, the projected range is halved when towing even the smallest, lightest trailer. With half the range (whilst towing), this lack of sufficient places to charge becomes a much more serious problem.
      Take off your rose-tinted glasses and give honest critique and you will be far more credible. I love EV's but they have some serious drawbacks.

Once in a while I check on my gas gauge and when I feel like putting gas in it I just do it literally at every corner. 5 minutes later I'm gone without taking any detours to reach a charging stations. That alone gives me so much more freedom. I don't have to do logistics. I can even go on sudden long road trips without the thought of wishing to have an ICE car. The vast majority of drivers don't fall for that bs like I said I have my 4 year experience with EV and someone like you telling me that EVs make things easier and cheaper is just delusional or simply a liar. Nice try though
