You could argue that Ruby is the true protagonist of A Crown of Candy, since the events of the story force her to mature beyond her years and she ends up finding peace in the end
There has never been a character in d20 that has touched a part of my soul and made my nearly choke from laughter as much as Pinocchio managed to do. Lou gave such a layered and hilarious performance that just makes it impossible to stop thinking about. Definitely S tier for me.

Nah but how can you put Jet above Ruby tho??? I entirely agree that the twin aspect of their character paired with fairly typical rebellious princesses hindered the quality of these characters as standalone, but Jet is almost empty, barely no character arc (not because the character is bad, but because she never got the chance to close even the tiniest bit of narrative thread she had. Even Lapin had a better wrapping up of his narrative. Jet sadly didn't even make it to the starting line). Meanwhile Ruby goes through Jet's loss, then her conflict with Caramelinda, her conflict with Saccharina, the Sugar Plum Fairy trying to manipulate her. Like objectively Ruby does a lot more than Jet, and fair enough some of it is because Jet died before really having anything interesting to her, but that does not make it less true. Ruby is undeniably a better character than Jet.
I think you're underrating the Neverafter characters personally, I haven't seen every season but I'm like halfway through d20's backlog and Neverafter is my favorite one so far. Gerard, Timothy Goose, and Ylfa are all my favorite characters for their respective players
not to mention saccharina is actually powerful like if anything she inherited the rocks power her aunts had she counter-spelled a legendary action ultimately changing the direction of the story i have a feeling they where suppose to lose and go through self journeys post fight. but they ended up going through later in a different way
Its hard (for me) to like her since her interactions with other pcs are mostly negative, which in turn made me to this day haven't watched the last 2 episodes of coc
My first interaction with Dimension 20 was the first episode of Unsleeping City and I was actually caught off guard with how young Lou seemed the first time I saw him outside of the Kingston character.
Night Angel is one of the greatest characters in Dimension 20 because Murph took a character that was one-note and gave him one of the most interesting and transformative arcs of any character in the series. Especially following up Kugrash who is already a top 5 D20 character would have been a difficult act to follow, and he did it so well
I feel like with Dimension 20 characters and putting them on a tier list you have to get over that initial hurdle of "Oh 'Character name' I love them" and then you can start thinking more critically relative to the rest of the D20 characters.
My 2 favorite things that happened with Pinocchio: first off when Lou got a nat 20 at the Candy Island and clearly saw that there was a trap with those hot dogs but Pinocchio still went for the trap because that's what his character would have done was just madness and hilarious. Also that whole speech with One of the princesses where he was drinking whiskey and chewing bubble gum and it was coming out of his leg was just madness. He was a good character I really liked him.
Good listing. I agree with a lot of your S's. As a DM do you find it fun to create encounters around a satisfying story arc? A of the S's have really tight story resolutions outside of the main conflict which is cool.
Only just started watching but i saw the thumbnail. Liam Wilhelmina is without a single doubt my favourite d20 character so if you actually do put him in B tier I'm going to cry.
Only thing I disagree with is Ruby's placement. She was a huge part in creating that interesting party dynamic along with Saccharina. How she handles Jets loss and the themes of "empty revenge" are a major emotional core of the 2nd half of the series. If you were rating her just on the first half id definitely agree. But based on how high Saccharina is (which i absolutely agree with) i think Ruby deserves to be higher using that same logic! Still just my two cents!! Great list and video, love your content!
I *adore* Gorgug- and particularly his relationship with his parents. I remember watching season 1 and I literally looked at my tv and said “If anything happens to the Thistlesprings, I’ll riot.”
I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the podcast Dungeons and Daddy’s, but if you’re interested in party dynamics with interpersonal conflict, that’s a huge part of their current season.
Very fine to put King Amethar of House Rocks, the Sovereign ruler of Candia and the Sugarlands, duke of cookieshire, Duke of Flanwood, protector of the realm, Bannerman of the Battle of Gumdrop Pass, Hero of Frosting Valley, The UN-fricken-FALLEN, at S-Tier!!!!
It’s really interesting to see how people really relate to and interpret characters so differently! Like I mostly agree on D tier (sorry) but then everything else I disagree on so much! Some characters you said didn’t have big character arcs or were flat I felt so differently about 😂😂 But that’s also the beauty of this show, every season we get 6 amazing characters from 6 amazing players and everyone can find a favorite ❤️
I love little red I'm so glad you remembered her! For me she is easily Emily's best character and totally S teir. I loved your much range she was able to show and how much depth her character had.
I rly didn’t agree with this tier list but honestly just because most characters would go in S for me. Some others would maybe drop down but generally I just think this is being way too harsh for entertainments sake. Then again it’s ur opinion we all love d20 here have a good one.
Going in blind, hoping my boy Liam makes S, just because his whole arc was pretty amazing. He’s probably my favorite in ACOC next to Theobold. I didn’t like Sacchrina at first but she really grew on me and the ending puzzle between her and Ruby had me in tears! If the thumbnail isn’t a fake out, I think Cumulous needs more love. He kind of boiled down to a couple of gimmicks but Zac played him well. For Neverafter, I’m really pulling for Ylfa and Girard.
@@cornholio7586 I think the way he fixated on Preston at Jett’s funeral seemed a little out of place, but it lead to a sweet moment between him and Ruby later on. I think reconciling with his father as Castle Manylicks was also a worthwhile payoff. I was also a fan of his asexual betrothal to Primsey, who was just a ray of sunshine as an NPC. The only thing I didn’t particularly care for was how graphic he was when explaining his parents’ polyamory but it wasn’t super off putting. I can’t really pick out a part of his arc that felt unnatural or one-note, and I’m a sucker for damage optimization so it’s an S from me personally. Lol I might be one of the few people that factors optimization heavily into my personal rankings. Him becoming peppermint Batman during the ship fight really sold me on the character. I love Amethar but couldn’t stand the 5/5 split between fighter and barb. He missed out on barb features and got redundant double attack. 6-4 in either direction would have been way more optimal. Fighter 6 would have been best but he started barb and would have been missing extra attack for a while.
I could be completely wrong but I think they let her shift while wild shaped because they flavored the different animal forms as “stances,” because she was always a wolf.
i think i remember them saying that when shifting she kept wolf-like features, but her entire skeleton/bone structure changed to whatever animal she shifted to - for example, imagine a horse-shaped wolf
Great list. Agree on 99% of it, but I think I would have put Cody up in S tier. He had so many great moments, and I think you're underrating his arc a bit. Sidequest character tiers next? XD
this is very difficult and you did a great job all things considered my S tiers are Yga, Skip, Saccharina, Pete, Kugrash, and Kingston my A tiers are Sophia, Ricky, Pib, Misty Rowan, Margaret, Fabian, and Barry my B tiers are Ylfa, Theobald, Riva, Pinocchio, Kristin, Gerard, and Cumulus my C tiers are Sundry Sidney, Sleeping Beauty, Ruby, Riz, Liam, Gunny, Gorgug, and Cody ; i love that Murph snuck Cody out of D tier, i just couldn't leave him there😂 my D tiers are Ruby, Mother Goose, Lapin, Jet, Amethar, and Adaine i think i got them all on there
This was so much fun to watch (even though it took longer because I kept pausing) because I played along at home 😂 the only ones we REALLY disagreed on were Liam and Fabian… I had Liam higher and Fabian lower. Crown of Candy was SO hard to rank because that’s my favorite season and I just love all of them!
I feel like I’m going crazy cuz I don’t see a single comment about it but fig is so fucking fun to watch I don’t see how you could put her at anything else then S on that alone, everyone is entitled to their opinion but gosh man broke my heart to see her at bottom of A. And I know I said that thing about opinions but Fabian is one of Lou’s best characters and has to be an easy A/S for me so that one’s just straight up wrong.
I think you need to make reasonings for your rankings. Like have humor, depth, and what they bring to the story as categories and go from there. This was 30 minutes of “Omg everyone can’t go into A tier” even after you would talk down a pc
It's crazy how I agreed with the vast majority of your takes except the lone fact that my #1 favorite character from each player is consistently one you thought was one of their worst 😭
before watching i’m just gonna say that if fig isn’t s tier i’m rioting update: i’m rioting, also though my opinion in her and all fantasy high characters is elevated bc of the current season which is emotionally devastating me currently but i love fig so much
so many wrong opinions but I like that you are giving d20 the love they deserve. Pinnochio is S-tier and has lots of great moments, shame your memory failed you, but yeah! we all have our differing opinions, so all good.
Ok, preface to what I'm going to say, I love Emily and I think she's one of the most humorous cast member of D20. Her work in a Court of Fey and Flowers with Lou truely elevated what I found to be a fun but flawed season. However. I think one of her biggest flaw as a player is how absurdly "self-aware" her characters are, like when she keeps saying stuff like "I see you as an authority figure" in Neverafter when she plays a CHILD. No child would ever talk like that. Same thing with Fig in Fantasy High, her characters jump emotional hoops and hurdles because her the player already jumped them. (not systematic of all of fantasy high, her relationship with Ayda was perfectly handled for example). This approach is excellent in a completely unhinged and parody season like Starstruck Odyssey (especially since she played an Android, and robots are naturally very descriptive and direct), but most of the time it really hurts the character arcs IMO. Where I'm going with this is that to me Saccharina's character does not deserve to be in S tier. Saccharina is so absurdly emotionaly needy with every single other PC and it feels like it's born from Emily again jumping emotional hoops and character arcs with the other PCs. Now the alternative is that this behavior is actually on purpose and part of her character, but paradoxically that creates an even greater problem. There's nothing wrong with writing flawed, damaged or even evil characters, on the contrary. However if Saccharina is truely so emotionaly unstable and selfish to the point of not seeing the problem with demanding instantanuous love and affection from people who don't know her and just suffered a great loss, then she should've never become queen at the end. If Emily hadn't dragged the insufferable oblivious behavior of Saccharina for a good 3-4 episode (especially her relationship with the mourning Ruby), then MAYBE she could've been allowed a character arc to justify her becoming more stable and mature. It's honesty a bit painful watching the second half of the season. You have Lou and Siobhan that want to play mourning and broken characters realistically, but who will OBVIOUSLY grow closer to Saccharina *if given enough time,* and right next to that you have Saccharina being truely aweful, needy and forward with these characters. And again Siobhan and Lou want to play realistically, and realistically if someone were coming on so fckn strong well each time it would delay the time it took you to appreciate them. Saccharina also kept mistaking Amethar and Ruby's grief-caused coldness for animosity for her (Ruby did dislike Saccharina at first but I think Sacch's behavior only aggravated what could've just been a half episode tendency). Seriously it all comes down to : You cannot demand for grieving/depressed people to both follow you AND do it with a smile. They're already giving their all and being on your side, you being pushing only makes everyone hurt. Just wait for them to be ready. It either felt like Emily herself was really wanting to be in the "group" of PC and thus *forced* the insertion of Saccharina to the group (which is obvioudly bad writing). OR Emily was fully aware of how she was sabotaging Saccharina's relationship with Amethar and Ruby, and it was an integral part of Saccharina's character (in which case the character is a really flawed person with a skewed worldview and should not be queen, or at the very least it should be acknowledged or addressed at some point that she has a lot to learn). So yeah to me Saccharina is a fun power trip with her dragon, her titles and her spells, but the character itself is either unnaturally played or badly written. Basically it felt like Emily wasted a lot of time for her character to be better written by wanting to skip important character arcs and interactions that the other players were (rightfully) not willing to skip. I will say though, one redeeming quality of Saccharina, is that even with the victim complex she got going on, she never actually acted upon it or hurt the people she thought hated her. She remained trusting even to the very end, which at least makes her less dangerous than her emotional unstability might make one think. PS : So yeah I'd put her in D or C at best. To me Iga Lizowski the polish mother who breaks family traditions, beats her mistrust towards magic and herself and teaches her children a new way to live is a much better written character for example, and should be above Saccharina.
funny every cast member 1 s tier cept for lou....lou is double s tier...and so is brennan...also have you guys checked out ibria, erika, brennan, lou's newish podcast? Worlds beyond number...I just found it...and assume anyone watching this 4 month old video...would probably enjoy it.
Okay, I made some statistics by assigning scores to each tier (S-5, A-4, B-3, C-2, D-1). On average you scored intrepid heroes as follows: Lou (4.2); Ally (4); Murph, Emily, Zack (3.67); Siobhan (2.67). But then I thought that maybe Lou and Ally are having better results due to only playing one character per season. If we take only the highest score from each season (like Saccharina for Emily and Misty for Siobhan), then Lou will tie with Zack at 4.2; Ally will stay at 4; Amily and Murph will tie again, but at 3.8; and Siobhan still will be last with 3. What I am saying is that as any person you have your preferences, and Lou is at your top, while Siobhan is your least favorite player. It led me to a conclusion, that maybe our character biases lay in the players' interactions with DM. Brennan Lee Mulligan famously has great chemistry with almost every living breathing person, but usually, he has the best one with Lou, being his best friend and all, and he and Siobhan often has very confrontational character interactions. P.s. Siobhan is a queen, but I totally get why Lou is your favorite.
i feel like adaine "dealt with anxiety" like, twice throughout both seasons of fantasy high and was constantly (socially) problematic for the party and brennan made her into a good character by weaving everyone she started beefing with for almost no reason into a deeper villain or less likeable character, even her father, the first thing she ever says to him is basically "i hate when you react to what you're reading at the breakfast table....why don't you buy a separate newspaper for every member of the family so i don't have to ask you what you're reacting to?"
Neverafter was the weakest season in my opinion. I just didn’t enjoy it, because even tho there was a fun narrative story, it felt to me like the characters just didn’t work with it. I wanted to know more about the deep world lore, and it just felt like the characters either got in the way, or were just too jokey. I just am a fan of deep story driven stuff, and this season was just too far leaning into “all joke” territory. My favorite seasons were: Crown of Candy, Unsleeping City, Mice and Murder, and the side quest Misfits and Magic. I liked neverafter’s characters but it was the “eh” of Dimension 20 seasons

Gerard, Timothy Goose, and Ylfa are all my favorite characters for their respective players
not to mention saccharina is actually powerful like if anything she inherited the rocks power her aunts had she counter-spelled a legendary action ultimately changing the direction of the story i have a feeling they where suppose to lose and go through self journeys post fight. but they ended up going through later in a different way
Saccharina being S tier is a very good take that not enough people see
Its hard (for me) to like her since her interactions with other pcs are mostly negative, which in turn made me to this day haven't watched the last 2 episodes of coc
@@andiahmadafiq2821 interesting. That makes her much more interesting to me.
Also, idk about "mostly", I'd say, mainly Ruby.
Hell yeah get that algorithm money! You deserve it. And tier lists are so fun. It was interesting to see what characters you gravitated to
The only problem with this tier list… is that it was made before Junior year which definitely adds a lot to the fantasy high characters
I do! A satisfying conclusion to a story is one of the best feelings in the world imo.
Only just started watching but i saw the thumbnail. Liam Wilhelmina is without a single doubt my favourite d20 character so if you actually do put him in B tier I'm going to cry.
You did. Crying happened.
100% agree!! Liam should be king of S tier!! Haha
"Slammed down, big style"
Only thing I disagree with is Ruby's placement. She was a huge part in creating that interesting party dynamic along with Saccharina. How she handles Jets loss and the themes of "empty revenge" are a major emotional core of the 2nd half of the series. If you were rating her just on the first half id definitely agree. But based on how high Saccharina is (which i absolutely agree with) i think Ruby deserves to be higher using that same logic! Still just my two cents!! Great list and video, love your content!
Rip Ylfa... not even on the list with her awesome orange hat.
Gorgug is single-handedly the most endearing character from Dimension 20. That’s what I’ll say about Gorgug.
I *adore* Gorgug- and particularly his relationship with his parents. I remember watching season 1 and I literally looked at my tv and said “If anything happens to the Thistlesprings, I’ll riot.”
Pinocchio has some huge moments with the stepmother, and with the dice of destiny and Alphonse
Kingston Brown from Uptown is the Dimension 20 GOAT
Lou's best PC is in Fey of Flowers. Green hunter😂
I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the podcast Dungeons and Daddy’s, but if you’re interested in party dynamics with interpersonal conflict, that’s a huge part of their current season.
I've listened to their first season, and it was great! Planning on making a couple videos about it!
Completely disagree.
Liked and subscribed!
Really enjoyed this! Would love to see another episode for the side quest characters!
Sofia Lee is S tier and SSSSS tier in season 2 I will die on this hill
It’s really interesting to see how people really relate to and interpret characters so differently! Like I mostly agree on D tier (sorry) but then everything else I disagree on so much! Some characters you said didn’t have big character arcs or were flat I felt so differently about 😂😂
But that’s also the beauty of this show, every season we get 6 amazing characters from 6 amazing players and everyone can find a favorite ❤️
S tier guesses before watching
Kingston brown
Riz the ball
Everyone from starstruck odyssey
Loved this.. what else would I love you ask? An NPC ranking🤠 Jawbone.. plug.. cmon
Maybe even a separate significant other npc list
Considering how well these tier lists do, I think this is an inevitability haha.
PS: Jawbone and Plug are absolutely S tier NPCs
After the first half of the season, Liam becomes a one note character. May as well be an npc. Still one of Ally's best characters somehow.
Liam kind of becomes detached as a coping mechanism. In true Beardsley fashion, he sabotages himself a lot
I would ask you to rank the newer d20 campaigns, but I already know that Burrow’s end will be S tier and that is all that matters to me.
Oh it is ABSOLUTELY S tier!
XD
this is very difficult and you did a great job all things considered
my S tiers are Yga, Skip, Saccharina, Pete, Kugrash, and Kingston
my A tiers are Sophia, Ricky, Pib, Misty Rowan, Margaret, Fabian, and Barry
my B tiers are Ylfa, Theobald, Riva, Pinocchio, Kristin, Gerard, and Cumulus
my C tiers are Sundry Sidney, Sleeping Beauty, Ruby, Riz, Liam, Gunny, Gorgug, and Cody ; i love that Murph snuck Cody out of D tier, i just couldn't leave him there😂
my D tiers are Ruby, Mother Goose, Lapin, Jet, Amethar, and Adaine
i think i got them all on there
This was so much fun to watch (even though it took longer because I kept pausing) because I played along at home 😂 the only ones we REALLY disagreed on were Liam and Fabian… I had Liam higher and Fabian lower.
Skipped to end after that saccharina placement 😂 controversial indeed
Would love to hear your commentary on the story and characters of Neverafter :)
I think you need to make reasonings for your rankings. Like have humor, depth, and what they bring to the story as categories and go from there. This was 30 minutes of “Omg everyone can’t go into A tier” even after you would talk down a pc
Put some respek on Rosamund Du Prix' name
Some extra S Tiers from non-Intrepid Heroes seasons:
Evan Kelmp
Rick Diggins
Ostentatia Wallace
Big Barry Syx S tier is GOATED
It's crazy how I agreed with the vast majority of your takes except the lone fact that my #1 favorite character from each player is consistently one you thought was one of their worst 😭
saccharina lovers and defenders rise 💪💪
before watching i’m just gonna say that if fig isn’t s tier i’m rioting
update: i’m rioting, also though my opinion in her and all fantasy high characters is elevated bc of the current season which is emotionally devastating me currently but i love fig so much
Kingston is the best Vox Populi and I love him.
did you make this rating public? would love to do my own version
3 words: Lampwick hotdog trap
Great video, love your voice btw!!
I named my black cat Jet, in honor of Princess Jet 🐈⬛ I’m very biased
so many wrong opinions but I like that you are giving d20 the love they deserve. Pinnochio is S-tier and has lots of great moments, shame your memory failed you, but yeah! we all have our differing opinions, so all good.
Just noticed that 3 of the 4 of your lowest tier characters are Siobhan characters.
Lapin S tier robbed
Wait where's Red? What you got against werewolves. S tier character
He mentions it verbally at the end bc the list didn’t have her
Ok, preface to what I'm going to say, I love Emily and I think she's one of the most humorous cast member of D20.
Fully agreed 👍🏻
Where is ylfa 😢
funny every cast member 1 s tier cept for lou....lou is double s tier...and so is brennan...also have you guys checked out ibria, erika, brennan, lou's newish podcast? Worlds beyond number...I just found it...and assume anyone watching this 4 month old video...would probably enjoy it.
30:01 Fabian????????? Excuse me he is S tier lol
I will ALWAYS defend Saccharina, because everything about her was great. Also, Pinocchio is S Tier, sorry not sorry
i feel like adaine "dealt with anxiety" like, twice throughout both seasons of fantasy high and was constantly (socially) problematic for the party and brennan made her into a good character by weaving everyone she started beefing with for almost no reason into a deeper villain or less likeable character, even her father, the first thing she ever says to him is basically "i hate when you react to what you're reading at the breakfast table....why don't you buy a separate newspaper for every member of the family so i don't have to ask you what you're reacting to?"
Skip 5ever
So 4 of the 7 "worst" are played by siobhan Thompson. Yeah, i agree.
Wow, i know she doesn't play the flashiest of characters but she still an important part of the team.
sad to admit but i gotta abandon the channel, just can't deal with you continuing to use beardsly's incorrect pronouns
I use they/them when talking about Ally, and use their character's pronouns when talking about their characters
he didn't
