  • The Hemp plant - marijuana’s sober cousin - is poised to revolutionize industry by taking the place of more toxic materials and putting us on a path to a cleaner, more sustainable world, says hemp advocate Amy Ansel. Noting the promise of hemp bioplastics that safely degrade, Ansel explains how hemp can also provide a cleaner, safer more sustainable substitute for paper, textiles, building materials, and even automobiles. From a 1500-year-old bridge in France made of hemp concrete to hi-tech autos that are lighter, stronger, and more fuel efficient, Ansel shows us how substituting hemp industrially can dramatically reduce pollution and conserve water resources while creating safer, stronger products. Amy Ansel had over two decades of IT program management experience at Microsoft before becoming an entreprener working to create a fresh and new program with purpose. She moved her attention to the industrial hemp industry, where her could employ her passion for sustainability. She has mapped her skills and systems over the budding agricultural industry with her partner, Tanya Hart, creating various pillars serving a global agenda in sustainable economies. Amy enjoys trying new things, disruptive technologies/bio innovation, playing cards and solving puzzles. A native of the West Coast, Amy resides outside of Seattle and enjoys spending time with 3 kids, 1 husband and 4 pets. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Cotton takes an incredible amount of pesticides and water. Hemp takes very little water and can be grown without pesticides. If hemp was never criminalized 80 years ago, the USA could have had a thriving industry employing millions of people.

Algae is a far more efficient feedstock for biofuels. Hemp requires fresh water and land and tractors and processing chemicals, etc. And the oil harvested is very little compared to the mass.
Hemp doesn't even compare to flax in its usefulness.
But hemp is good at replacing wood pulp for paper and food packaging. The fibers are strong but brittle and given its fast growing can affordably replace plastic products in many applications. NOT be plastic, replace it.

Cannabis is an annual crop, algae is a daily crop.
Cannabis requires arable land and fresh water, algae doesn't.
Just search algae biofuel and you'll find lots of hype, dig deeper and you'll find lots of science.

Amy talks with passion. It was motivating to hear. There are just a few factual errors. Hemp and marijuana are the same species, (Cannabis sativa) but a different variety. There is no equivalent of 'cousin' in the plant world. Amy mentions every part of the plant can be used but doesn't mention what roots can be used for. Importantly hempcrete is not load supporting like concrete. It is used as a solid wall for insulation and humidity control. Hempcrete can be used as insulation under floors but not as flooring. Good on her for getting up in front of such a large audience, the world needs more people like her.

This is great information and I am forwarding it to congress right now, I am a very influential democrat US Senator however I have to remain anonymous. Thank you, we need to get more clear information about the full scale benefits of hemp and cannabis out there in ways that are easier to access, more wholesome and easy to understand, I see information but it is all vastly scattered and none of it is really in detail, this plant is WORTH thorough book research for medical purposes and energy.

I am a hemp leader and it is my business and I am pleased with this presentation. I should say that hemp is not easy to grow or harvest and it does require pesticides. This year we were surprised by the insects that attacked our hemp. Corn borers, caterpillars and mites are just a few that like hemp. They are working on organic rated pesticides now. It is untrue that insects don't like hemp. As far as bioplastics, we must continue to do research but we are not there yet. Hemp is used in composite materials, but they have not yet created a true compostable hemp bio-plastic. Right now it must be mixed with some other material to have any shelf life and needs a catalyst material to compost. But research will get us there if we have the time and the commitment to get there. We all must fight for the right for hemp to be the industrial crop that we need to save the earth. Big Ag and Big Pharma are trying to take over the hemp market now. We must keep an eye on the bills our legislators are trying to pass under the radar. We all need to pay attention and take part in our State Governmental process. Most of these legislators are uneducated and do not understand what they are voting on. We need to educate them and get these laws passed correctly and protect the small farmers.

Also need to consider the fact that hemp doesn’t grow all year around so it would require growing enough hemp for a whole year whereas trees can be harvested as you go. There’s a storage issue and a cashflow issue. I fear the only way for hemp to succeed is the outlawing of tree removal.

Great question! Cannabionoids are originally endogenous, but maybe the biodegradable nature would be a hurdle to overcome if used inside the body? Or maybe it could be tuned to stay in use for a certain time for the body to heal or do whatever and then it would degrade and be eliminated!? I bet this will be in the sights of the medical community, if not already
