- This beautiful German love song became popular during World War II throughout Europe and the Mediterranean among both Axis and Allied troops. Written in 1915 as a poem by schoolteacher Hans Leip, it was later set to music by Norbert Schultze in 1938; this song it most closely associated with Marlene Dietrich.
