I was at this concert as a medical volunteer with the Haight-Ashbury Free Medical Clinic - Rock Medicine Section. We staffed all the Bay Area concerts. On New Year's Eve we always covered several Bil Graham venues as simultaneous concerts were going on. I believe I was first at the Ozzy concert in Brisbane. After that was done, we came to Oakland where the big show - Grateful Dead would go on until three in the morning. I missed NRPS but was there for the rest. Great times....

Music videography tip: if someone is soloing, it tends to be a good time to put them in the frame. I know they weren't at their peak but some nice guitar work was happening.

Without pedal steel, it's not NRPS.

They have pedal steel in this video, what’s your point?

I think that was Leo Sayers Making his exit from the stage at the very beginning, another great show.

Respectfully, I think that was Ken Kesey actually. The New Riders were opening for the Grateful Dead here. After the Dead's first set, Ken came out (or down I guess) and did a countdown for the new year. He must have come out and done an intro or a skit or something before the New Riders. You can watch the Dead's show with Ken's countdown here: ua-cam.com/video/2dZ6wR4n02Y/v-deo.html
Also, I think Leo would have had more hair. If you look at Leo's picture on his Wikipedia page, even in 2009 his hairline hadn't receded much at all: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leo_Sayer

That looked like Leo Sayer. I've never seen Kesey look anything like that and he doesnt look like that the end of the youtube link you provided and at which I looked.

Were they playing at a unusually faster tempo here, or is the recording running too fast?? Sounds way too fast...on every song!! Weird.

I'm willing to bet the bassist was a member of the road crew/guitar tech...Nice video though.

On the timeline I have seen for 1980 through 1982, it lists Billy Wolf on bass

I wish I could time travel and play bass for them!

This was the start of a low point in the band's history. Buddy and the drummer wound up leaving and the new Riders became a Duo, with just Marmaduke and Rusty Gauthier. Not to be great again until David Nelson reformed the band with Buddy, after John Dawson passed. This was my favorite band as a teen. So many great shows!

    Horrible period in the NRPS.

yep. after seeing this again on better equipment, it's pretty sad . Buddy was not playing well at all here...a few good spots but that's it.

@Jimmy no I think they had a bit of a second coming with the sequined cowboy suits and the addition of skip batten. That tour, I think 75 was pretty freaking hot. Stephen love was the first in a succession of pretty shitty bass players. But the very worst period of new riders music was when it was just the duo of Marmaduke and Rusty. They shouldn’t have called that the new riders of the purple Sage. I loved the new riders in their peak almost better than any band I’ve ever loved.

@Jimmy I never said he was an upgrade and I was definitely sad when Torbert left for Kingfish. But I was a big fan of his ever since the byrds untitled album and he was a kick ass bass player who sang good and wrote good songs.
