  • The Lane Motor Museum is the home of some truly whacky cars. One of the most exciting is the Gyro-X, a prototype from 1967 that stays up on two wheels through the use of a gyroscope.

    It leans INTO the corner instead of out? That's what they've been trying to solve for ages with modern anti-roll bars and suspension systems. Turns out all you need is a car build on a motorbike with a gyroscope. Truly amazing.

  • @mimi1girl2dempsey3
    @mimi1girl2dempsey3 Рік тому +10

    Let's face it leaning into corners is the closest feeling of moving like a plane there is and that's what makes motorcycles so much fun so I figure if I could get the plans and a gyro of my own I could modify a motorcycle to be enclosed and sturdy on the road. A roll cage is a must for sure.

    • @ArneChristianRosenfeldt
      @ArneChristianRosenfeldt Рік тому +3

      The gyro effect of the wheels is a problem. So the transversal engine turns the other way. Depending on the gear, a gyro needs to compensate: in low gear the engine, but in high gear the wheels.
      Only a plane with counter rotation is a good plane. P-38 and A400M.

    To be fair, this is very clever and intriguing engineering, but evidently this was also an answer to a question very few (if anyone) asked. As the narrator aptly describes, a product of its era. What a fun challenge though! For two wheels, a large bike with panniers would be just as suitable (though likely not as comfy on longer journeys).

    Its great to see quirky stuff like this restored to what it was but you have to say what on earth were they taking when they thought that was a good idea! Ok it takes up half a lane but you couldn't get twice as many cars on the road could you, even if every single car was that width you'd need twice as many cars as its clearly not a family sized car so it certainly wasn't the answer to congestion. The narration also mentions better cornering stability and less chance of skidding. With half as many tyres that wasn't going to work was it. How they managed to get 3/4 of a million in backing is beyond me.

  • @xpusostomos

    What is the purpose of the gyro, is it to make the car lean into corners, or is it to make the car drive around corners without leaning? I suspect it's the latter, in which case I suspect that going into a corner too hard would see it fly off. But who knows, it would be interesting to see this thing pushed a bit hard to see what happens. And is the new gyro thought to be similar specs to the original? How much do they know?
