The Fox God has sacrificed a Jpop idol and reborn as a metal goddess queen. We've been blessed by the Fox God.🙌

Great reaction - the first song on the first album ... and how better could they introduce themselves. They normally use it as a show opener, but this was special, Su's 16th birthday and what better way to close the show ... and much more memorable than my 16th birthday.
The song is based on a pun - the Japanese word desu (the U is silent) means to be, I am, we are, it is etc. Spoken with a slight lisp it sounds like the English word death ... so that have a cute but metal way to introduce themselves.
The lyrics: "B_A_B_Y_M_E_T_A_L" "I am Su-metal" "I am Yuimetal" "I am Moametal" "We are BABYMETAL"
There is an English translation of the intro video in the description of the video which would have helped a bit (perhaps) with understanding what was happening:
    "Legend 1997.
It is told that receiving the legendary neck brace from the god of Metal,
she shall abandon her human life and be reborn as a goddess.
The bloodline which has been passed down from ancient times
is destined to be the guide, boarding the ark of time.
    The apocalypse is prophesied
    DOOMSDAY comes
There remains ... little time ..."
The Legend 1997 concert was all about Suzuka Nakamoto's journey from JPop Idol to sacrificing that life to be reborn as Metal Goddess Su-metal, chosen by the Fox God to lead the Metal Resistance.
    Definitely NotACult ... honest.😇🤫
Your reference to Metallica will offend nobody (unlike the singing perhaps😉) as that was an homage to Metallica's song 'One' and the statue crumbling at the end was an homage to their Lady Justice statue from the 1989 Justice For All tour.
The neck brace plays a big part in BABYMETAL lore, but that is also an homage to X Japan's founder, drummer, pianist and main composer Yoshiki who had to wear one after damaging his neck headbanging.
They have brought 'BABYMETAL Death' back as their opening number now they are a trio again. The last time they played it was December 2017, the first show Yui missed ... they couldn't really use it as a duo. The first time they played it with Momometal introducing herself she got a huge cheer - which made all 3 of them so happy.😊

    Nice one!
*Everyone:* Su-metal, did you do anything cool for your 16th birthday?
*Su-metal:* ...Uhmm... "It was good" 👀😅
    _Desu_ = "I am / We Are"
_Babymetal Desu_ = "We are Babymetal"
Say it with a lisp, and you have "Death". Now Babymetal has a cute and very metal way of introducing themselves. This has been their staple concert intro song, in this case, used as an epic 16th birthday concert outro, lol. 🤣
Metallica references because they were a major inspiration for the girls early on, and producer Koba was a big fan. After seeing Metallica play live in Japan, Su, Moa, and Yui all realized there were so much more to Metal, especially in how powerful a message it can convey. They had a much greater appreciation and love for Metal because of it, and strived to deliver this in their future performances.
Also, what's really cool in terms context: Earlier same year (2013), Babymetal split off from their parent Idol group Sakura Gakuin (they were the "Heavy Music Club"), and became an independent act. Their whole story-arc is that the Fox God summoned Su, Yui, and Moa to infiltrate the "Big Bad" Idol industry, the dominant music industry in Japan opressing all other genres, to revitalize heavy metal. Thus, in a way, this is the culmination of Babymetal becoming independent, moving away from the Idol scene, Su turning 16, etc. The theme here is that Suzuka Nakamoto, the mortal and idol "dies" and is reborn Su-metal, a metal goddess.
This entire concert (Legend 1997) is also structured as such: Starting with a completely lip-sync'ed EDM version of Headbanger, with and their poppier songs with the fake band Baby Bones (much like how a typical Idol group does things), ending with their heavier songs and their Kami Band coming on stage for the 5-song encore, ending with BABYMETAL DEATH (A most definitely metal performance). Next year (2014), the Kami Band became full backing band, Babymetal became the youngest to play the famous Budokan, and they also set out on their first world tour. One can appreciate all this even more given the context!

For those who say BABYMETAL is not metal, I present you with BABYMETAL Death.😉
OTFGK, but an interesting take posted on BABYMETAL REDDIT by VulpineDeity:
Take it a step farther. Not only does 'SU-METAL DESU' mean she's introducing herself, it's also her super-hero transformation phrase.
Like on Sailor Moon, Usagi says 'Moon Prism Power!' and turns into Sailor Moon, Suzuka Nakamoto shouts 'I AM SU-METAL' and becomes possessed by the spirit of the Fox God and transforms into the Metal Goddess SU-METAL.
The magical girl who transforms into a hero is a huge trope in Japan, comparable to Disney princesses in the west. BABYMETAL DEATH! follows the trope and it's the moment that they all transform into their magical alter egos at the start of the show.

Yeah magical girls have been around forever. My favorite is Madoka Magica. It takes the Magical Girl genre and transforms it from cute into fairly horrifying. There is also Gushing over Magical Girls which is just extremely lewd but actually has an interesting plot and is well made. Gushing pun intended. I mean there are tons of them. There is a regular Magical Girl anime now... Magic Cure? Something like that.

    Translation to the opening monologue:-
    メタルの魂を守るため
    自らの命と引き換えに戦った
In order to defend the soul of the Metal,
in exchange for her own life, Su-Metal fought.
    やがて SU-METALの魂は
    紅の炎となり
    Before long, SU-METAL's soul
    became the crimson flame
    天空を紅く染めたのであった
    and dyed the sky crimson.
    だが 遠くの星が消えゆくように
However, as the distant stars go out,
    命の終焉はこの世の理なのだ
the end of life is the law of nature.
    今紅き月がSU-METALと共に燃えゆく• • •
Now the crimson moon is burning out with SU-METAL.

The Destruction Of The Statue is similar to Metallica Justice for All live concert in Mexico City, Mexico 🇲🇽.
The Japanese word "desu" (です) is a copula (= to be). The Eastern Japanese almost drop "u" of this word, so the word "desu/des" sounds like "death". And someone started writing "DEATH" instead of "です" (desu). It makes sense only where the Japanese word "desu" is expected to come. The title "BABYMETAL DEATH" means only "We are BABYMETAL." No relation to the death itself.
I'm not sure of its origin, but I saw long before such a character as a vampire or a death metal singer in a comic and all his "です" (desu) were replaced with "DEATH" to emphasize his character. With such an air, it works well. Without such an air, it probably doesn't work.
There is a genre named "Death Metal". The sound of this tune seems to fall within that genre, and the lyric writer may have put many "DEATH"s to emphasize the Death-Metal-ness. It might be alright to use many "DEATH"s without thinking of death if some of Death Metal bands also chose their style just to differentiate themselves rather than driven by the feeling about death. But I don't know the Death Metal well.
    MAKUHARI MESSE:-
Makuhari Messe (幕張メッセ) is a Japanese convention center outside Tokyo, located in the Mihama-ku ward of Chiba city, in the northwest corner of Chiba prefecture. Designed by Fumihiko Maki, it is accessible by Tokyo's commuter rail system. Makuhari is the name of the area, and Messe is a German language word meaning "trade fair".
    •Owner: Makuhari Messe, Inc.
    •Opened: 9 October 1989.
    •Expanded: October 1997.
•Classroom-style seating: 304 (International Conference Room).
    •Banquet/ballroom: 1,600 (Convention Hall).
•Theatre seating: 7,860 (Makuhari Event Hall).
Makuhari Messe is close to Tokyo Disney Resort in Urayasu, and to Chiba prefecture's black sand beaches. It is accessible from Kaihimmakuhari station on the Keiyō Line of East Japan Railway Company (JR East). The center is the host of the annual Tokyo Auto Salon (modified car show, in January), the biennial Tokyo Motor Show (in October), the annual Tokyo Game Show (video game hardware and software exhibition, in September), the annual Jump Festa (manga, anime, and video game exposition, in December), and the biannual Wonder Festival (toys, scale figures, and garage kits exposition, in February and July). The venue was host to several Nintendo Space World events.
It will be the venue for certain sports during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

My favorite babymetal performance along with 'In the name of - Legend S: Baptism XX'.
Your comment about Metallica cannot offend anyone because in fact it is a tribute to Metallica. That and the statue breaking at the end.
Seeing the cross on your neck, I wasn't really sure how you were going to react, but I see that you liked it.
The only reason they did that is simply because it "looks cool", no intention to offend anyone.
The story behind it is that pop Idol Su must die to be reborn as a Metal Goddess.
In my opinion, she got it xD

Nothing to see here. Just Su-metal celebrating her 16th birthday with her friends and some of their fans (like 9.000 of them) all chanting DEATH! DEATH! DEATH! DEATH!... haha... 😁
Now seriously, this is from the concert Legend 1997 (SU-METAL seitan sai) aka SU-METAL 16th birthday party and took place on December 21st, 2013 at the Makuhari Messe event hall in Chiba (Greater Tokyo Area).
Lyrics are quite simple: "B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L" "SU-METAL desu, YUIMETAL desu, MOAMETAL desu, BABYMETAL desu... Death death death death death death..." etc. The word "desu" sounds close to the English (mis)pronunciation of "death" (since the "U" is silent), and pretty much means "I am, you are, we are". So, they are literally introducing themselves. Yes they love puns. Thus, the song's name is actually "BABYMETAL DEATH" (We are BABYMETAL).
This was (and is again now) usually their opening song but this time they used it as a closing number. The meaning of the whole thing is the sacrifice of SU-METAL, giving up her mortal life as a human and Idol to reborn as a Metal Goddess. It was the final act of the show, which was an allegory about BABYMETAL's transition from a J-pop idol group subunit to a legit metal band. It also was partially themed around "Evangelion" (don't know how familiar you are with it).
And yes, the beat on the intro and the final statue crumbling are obvious tributes to Metallica. And the neckbrace is one of their several tributes to X-Japan (as you already know).
Here is the translation of the intro (credits to to Du-metal):
"Legend 1997. (referring to the year of Su's birth)
    There remains... little time.."
    Until next time!

Aaaah, THE version 😄 Right from the beginning the well known little smile in your face😄 And recognized Metallica´s "One" with the bass/drum opening, you´re a man of culture! 😄 "One" was on the "And Justice for All" album, which was followed by their world tour. They broke the statue of "Madam Justice" (look up the Album cover!) at the end of the concerts. Babymetal did this as a deep bow to Metallica. The crucifix thing is most likely a reference to the "Neon Genesis Evangelion" manga and is used as a symbol for death and rebirth, as you mentioned already. No mocking of any past, present or future religion intended.
One of the most metal-theatric stage performances I know of! The team of Fujioka-san, BOH-san, Aoyama-san and Cygnus-san at their finest, the musicianship in this is world class classic metal. Most respect to them!
