Nice lesson. When I have an A minor or A minor 7 backing track I prefer the A Dorain sound ( A B C D E F# G, which is a second mode of G major scale). Most most jazz players go for this sound, like with "So What" by Miles Davis...
If I play A B C D E F G ("D Dorian", theoretically it's A Natural Minor when played over A minor track) then it has the sound "|A Nature Minor" (vi mode of G Major), and yes, it sounds like Santana because he likes it a lot, so it sounds Latin or even European. You can link and blend the two cases all you want. Add a little blues scale or basic minor pentatonic scale too and you are good to go.

Very clear and knowledge lesson. I have tried play A nat. Minor scale then try A dorian scale just shift one note that change mode or taste.

Good take on this. I kind of knew all this, but you made it very adaptable. Of course you should always emphasize the root of the mode scale, and the passing notes that also emphasizes the mode.

The best explanation of the modes. 90% of these people try to explain but the totally wrong way. You see it is so simple take the key of C major and play the D dorian. You do not have to be in the minor scale to play the Dorian just play in Cmajor backing track and play in D dorian mode or what I call Mode-= Mood
