    didn't know you could reuse potting mix. heard good argument recently that it's too important they sprout for time/cost reasons. I know it's more complicated than that. Like quality seeds that push up through sand. Lovely social media, right?

      I reuse potting mix quite a bit when planting my containers. However, when I’m starting seed like I’m doing here, I always use fresh potting mix.
      I don’t want to take any chances.

    Hello Alan, the only thing I can think of about using the press n seal plastic, is that when the plants start coming up they might stick to it and get pulled out of the soil when you take it off the trays!!!

    • @BIGALTX
      @BIGALTX  7 місяців тому

      Hmmmm, I didn’t think about that.
      However, I just pulled the plastic off two of the six packs that had started to germinate, and did not have that problem. Thank goodness.

      @@BIGALTX good deal, i didn’t know if it would or not. that would be a bad deal if it pulled all your seedlings out.

    I'm starting my seeds late too. I've heard that pearlire deters fungus gnats. I'm trying it over my seeds this year as well.

      Cinnamon helps with fungus mats- sprinkle some on the soil around plants!

    When you take your small starts out to your barn, do you keep them on heat mats or not- I have a big 2 story “shed” I could do this also, but it is still pretty cold out there. This is why I was asking. Last year, I did everything inside and planted them outside after they were about 6-7 weeks old ( pretty big). My grow lights were set up inside too, but it does take up a lot of space in the spare bedroom! Thanks in advance!

    • @BIGALTX
      @BIGALTX  7 місяців тому

      I will probably move them outside in the barn just so I can start more plants in here.
      I plan on starting some seedless watermelon inside, so these will probably need to move to the barn.
      But, if it’s really cold outside, I may leave them in here and just bring another heat mat in and start the second round.

      Since I have a spare heat mat, even if I take them to the barn, I will probably have them on a heat mat outside.

    How do you fertilize in ground plants that are under landscaping fabric?

    • @BIGALTX
      @BIGALTX  7 місяців тому

      I would imagine this could only be done through a fertilizer injector. I use that a lot anyway. You could probably (if the hole in the landscape cloth is big enough), pull it back a little and spread some fertilizer under the cloth. But I imagine I will use my fertilizer injector.

    I started seeds outdoors and they are up, do I need to bring them in and put under lights?

    • @BIGALTX
      @BIGALTX  7 місяців тому

      They definitely need to be under grow lights or in a greenhouse. They must, must, must have ample light, or they will not turn out very well at all.
