It's not everyone else's fault your understanding of science and biology is the same as an elementary school child's.
I would also like to point out that, in addition to directly, actively, and intentionally harming trans men and women, these bathroom bills and the underlying transphobia of people pushing for them and electing people to push them harms anyone who does not meet an incredibly specific concept of performative gender. This negatively affects cisgender women who do not conform to gendered stereotypes, POC, etc.
Agreed. There has already been more than one example of a cisgender man following a cisgender women into the women's bathroom (without a hint of irony) to confront her because he mistakenly identified her as transgender. Nobody has ended up better off from the fear mongering and discrimination.

The people complaining about trans people in a certain restroom over "safety" also gloss over the fact that the ostensibly unsafe people are men, who if they wanted to hurt anyone, probably would ignore any laws about who can use what bathroom just like they'd be ignoring the laws about hurting other people.
So you would ignore a woman's long term trauma from males, to cater to trans women. Even as a supportor, I would suggest building a different restroom for them. Tysm for this. I'm a transsexual/transgender Christian and have often found engaging with my faith difficult since coming out, as most communions where I am from can be quite hostile (or, at the very least, dismissive) towards us. Even in my private practice, it has been hard to accept myself as many of my religious teachings growing up were at odds with who I really was, and your videos (though definitely not just this one) have helped me so much and have motivated me to get back into scripture.
Have you seen Dr McClellan's video on the different genders in ancient Judaism? There's a reason most synagogues are lgbtq inclusive. Our rabbi is transgender.
Gender as expression is just that. Expression. A persons biology is just that. How a person chooses to express that is up to them. There are as many genders as there are people. In my congregation we have different conversations about gender and expression individually and then what that means for the kingdom and how we reconcile these. As a non-binary person with religious trauma because of this topic and related 2SLGBTQIA+ reasons, I cannot tell you how much this means to me. My understanding of Jesus is so vastly different from most Christians, I had to leave the church behind. Hearing conservatives say things like "Jesus is too woke" just makes my brain spin. I had the entire Bible memorized by 11, and attended church twice a week and all of my friends were from church and I didn't do secular girl scouts, but the Pentecostal girl scouts, attended church camp in the summers. I wanted to be a youth minister for at least 8 years, but once I got rejected for my queerness, it broke my heart. I could not reconcile the idea that something as pure as love could be _wrong_. I know there's a lot of things mistaken for *love* in these modern times, but what I feel for my partner is the truest, purest love I've felt outside of that for my son. We've been together for nearly 15 years, and my stepdad told me because we are both AFAB, I'll never understand "true love".

Well said Dan. I cant believe how some people today are so medieval in their thinking but we see them wave their holy books as justification for whatever they want. Fundamentalists always do that, often as they oppress or kill people. Religious fanatics might not like it but humans are animals. And in the animals kingdom, sexual designation is fluid. Some species change their sex as they grow, some even change en-mass if there is a lack of males or females, or in response to their environment. To believe these definitions are fixed is to be ignorant of the facts. But when did religious people ever care about facts or truth?
Alligators are one of my favorites. Their biological sex is largely dependent on the heat of the nest. Mama alligators have carefully pack the dried reeds/plants and mud to ensure different parts of the nest are different temperatures and colder than seasonal temperatures can lead to too many males and vice-versa. These are creatures that predate modern humans by over 30 million years. Our binary is not nature's binary.

Being part of the LGBT community it has become more than apparent that gay,lesbian and transgender people are far more at risk from the general population than we ever have been to them. "Biological male" is a term used by people who don't really understand biology. Aside from the genetics (and the 'Y'-chromosome has been degrading since it initially evolved some 166 million years ago in mammals, and has already disappeared entirely from some mammalian species, and is expected to be lost in humans in around 6 million years); sexual dimorphism has a number of developmental forks, each one of which can go the other way (and the default is 'female'). So there is a fairly broad continuum with significant overlap between 'male' and 'female' - including what one finds attractive and traits like physical strength, endurance, intelligence (if that is truly a single, measurable trait, which I am not entirely convinced is the case), etc. I am, frankly, tired of people who are ignorant of any biology they did not learn in their 9th grade health class make pronouncements on what 'biology' has to say about it.
That's because they're using biology to justify role play, and calling it a spectrum. Just because someone is born with six fingers doesn't mean my five fingers are six because I say so. And the idea that I could force you at gunpoint to agree is fucking mind-blowing 🤦♂️

Moreover, comparing trans and cis people's brain scans shows that a brain in a body that was designated one sex at birth can function like a typical brain in a body that was designated the "opposite" sex at birth, and such a "cross-sex" brain tends to coincide with that person identifying as trans. Did God make several million mistakes everywhere on Earth, or is biological evolution and individual development a fundamentally imprecise process?

This is a problem I point out every once in a while when someone (usually a Christian guy) asks, “What is a woman?” They should ask “What is a man” first before they go on to more advanced questions. That “man” argument has been going on globally for millennia. Philosophers have debated this problem to the point where you have some cultures having coming-of-age rituals where, if you don’t pass them…or if you avoid them altogether…you’re considered not a man but still a boy (basically calling you feminine without calling you feminine). Then there are discussions on what behavior and characteristics males are supposed to have to be seen as “not a woman,” or worse, “a girl,” or anything close to being feminine and worthy of criticism…because they’re “beta” or weak. Whatever the definition is of a man is held up to a perceived ideal of “manliness” that a guy is supposed to have in order to be respected by other men, and that perspective changes from culture to culture and from time to time. And there’s no universal agreement on what a man is besides not behaving in a way that is seen as weak…a characteristic that only belongs to females. But there’s not even a consensus on what makes someone weak, unmanly, and despised by the recognized ruling elite. Even whole societies criticize each other’s men for not living up to their standards. Whatever it is, there’s a lot of effort put into distancing males from anything regarded as feminine and trying to make it into the superior class of respectable human beings. But nobody can definitively decide what a man is…beyond them not being a woman…which btw, whatever that is. It’s a very nebulous subject. I’m now wondering if the definition isn’t “what is a man” (which in almost every place and time is the ideal) as much as “what isn’t a woman.” If these guys can’t clarify what a man is after all this time, they’re not qualified to ask the next question. They’re just acting like privileged narcissists. Ask “what is a man” first before asking “what is a woman.” Don’t get ahead of yourself or you’ll look uneducated.
I've worked professional skills jobs part time and we had bathrooms like we have at home, in a VERY RED state. Nobody gave a shyte..well they did..but nobody cared!

As a nonbinary person who presents as more masculine in spite of the fact that I was assigned female at birth, I have faced a lifetime of bigotry. For me to conform with what society thinks of as feminine would be extremely uncomfortable to the point of being emotional torture. This is not a choice. I have known this about myself since i was in kindergarten. For people who accuse us of pretending to be the something we are not, we are actually being honest about who we are. Since we are not harming anyone, we should be given the space to do that, same as everyone else. As for all this drama about bathrooms, we have been sharing public bathrooms and other communal facilities with cisgender people since the beginning of time, with a vanishingly small number of incidents. We are not the problem, we just want to use these facilitiesfor their designatedpurpose. I agree with your assertion that the people who have their panties in a bunch over this need to grow the hell up. This is being stirred up by certain individuals who are trying to distract the public from the fact that they are undermining our democracy and trying to install an authoritarian government. This needs to stop before the freedom that is the birthright of all Americans is ripped to shreds.
Never heard it outlined as accurately as you have just done. My guideline has always been: gender =man/woman= construct, sex = male/female = biology, and biology is never black/white. Keeps it clear for me. Love the shirt.

"A man is a man, and a woman is a woman", in a sense, he is mostly correct, but only because his understanding of those words are incorrect. Gender Identity is something that exists in the mind, not between someone's legs. A transgender man is a man, and a transgender woman is a woman. It may have taken them a bit longer to figure that out because of sociatal pressures trying to dictate to them who they are based on what they were born with between their legs, but they didn't "become" a man or a woman, they always were one between their ears. Transitioning just helps align the body with the mind.

I went to Egypt for almost a month as a tourist. Public bathrooms there don’t supply TP. In every Ladies’ room I visited while there was a male offering facial tissue for a tip. The males were as young as eight, as old as eighty. Never a problem, no issues.

As a student of biology and anthropology, and a Christian trying to rediscover God - there's actually a lot of support for a spectrum of phenotypic gender presentation in its connection to sex. By that I mean, even biologically its not as simple as 'xy male and xx female' all the time. Essentially, all the biological characteristics we can see and associate with an individuals sex-determining chromosomes, are dependent on a series of hormone relays that tell the body how to develop what part and when and where to do it. Whenever hormones are interrupted or work a little differently than they should, it'll affect the physical function and appearance of a lot of these characteristics. It's not as though having the two x chromosomes automatically makes every cell in your body know you must be a "woman", it simply means that certain pathways get activated, which results in certain hormones being secreted, which results in certain body parts developing according to those hormones. Even trying to reduce human gender to the seemingly binary nature chromosomes reveals that it's still very complicated and nothing fits easily into two distinct categories.
I don't trust people who spend a lot of time talking about who is in what bathrooms, especially children's bathrooms, like in a middle school. These creepers spend a not-insignificant portion of their time talking about who is pooping where, and that's just not ok. As long as you're not hurting anyone in the bathroom, and your aim is true, I don't care. As for people being hurt, it seems to be the good Christians who are doing the hurting.

@@gabbygood6813 I just looked that up and according to AP News the perpetrator used male pronouns so it doesn't seem like he was a trans girl. Sexual assaults do occur in bathrooms, no one is denying that, but that was a problem long before there were any concerns about trans people.
This is one of the weirder parts of Christianity to me. I'm Jewish, and Judaism recognizes six sexes, and doesn't have much to say about gender at all. Also, Joseph's beautiful "coat" is more probably a dress. The bit in Scripture about not wearing the clothing of the other gender is pretty clearly understood in the context of people trying to disguise themselves in order to enter places forbidden to their gender - men going into the women's baths and the like. I wonder if Mike Johnson could tell me if a tumtum is a man or a woman?
Also Jewish, but these days I am secular. Some of my friends aren't, though, so I know our new local rabbi is transgender. I never had any issues when I did attend, and I'm gay.
My experience is discussing this with transphobic people is they are not interested in facts. They will continue to maintain that there is a perfect correlation between biological (genetic) sex and gender identity even AFTER they are know about Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (and other conditions). It is a textbook example of not letting the facts get in the way of your prejudices.
One of the cultural shocks I got when I was stationed in Italy in the late 60s was at a bar one night. I went to use the restroom which consisted of a small room with a sink and a small room with a large basin in the floor with two raised areas in the middle to place your feet to squat. That was a minor shock, but not a big deal. When I came out to wash my hands I was shocked to find a barmaid using the sink. That’s when I learned a lot of the public restrooms were open to both sexes.
You reference the Matthew Eunuch verse a lot. I was told the translation for eunuch could mean anyone who did not have sex with women. Hence made by man, means castrated, but for god is just celibacy, and from the womb means men who weren’t attracted to women. Even if this is only mildly plausible, it’s a great negotiation to claim Jesus was ok with gay men.

@ He does often point out his disagreement with some scholarly opinions. As much as I would like to disagree with his take on the bitter water verse, I don’t. He does always state, some scholars do disagree. What I’ve heard could be completely wrong but if indeed the original word was used to describe men who weren’t attracted to women, in Roman law at the time, as was claimed , then it absolutely is something that could be debated. As a country, we need to stop conflating the words sex and gender. “Sex” is the male or female bits, and “gender” is the way one acts socially, sexually, culturally, etc. “Sex” can’t change naturally, but only by way of surgery. “Gender” can and does change over the course of life. For example, many children are some level of gender neutral until 3 or 4, then develop a gender that can last until puberty, or change again. Many little girls are what we call Tomboys, which is a masculine gender, and the develop a more feminine gender at puberty... all while being of the female sex.

Agreed. There has already been more than one example of a cisgender man following a cisgender women into the women's bathroom (without a hint of irony) to confront her because he mistakenly identified her as transgender. Nobody has ended up better off from the fear mongering and discrimination.

So you would ignore a woman's long term trauma from males, to cater to trans women. Even as a supportor, I would suggest building a different restroom for them. Tysm for this. I'm a transsexual/transgender Christian and have often found engaging with my faith difficult since coming out, as most communions where I am from can be quite hostile (or, at the very least, dismissive) towards us. Even in my private practice, it has been hard to accept myself as many of my religious teachings growing up were at odds with who I really was, and your videos (though definitely not just this one) have helped me so much and have motivated me to get back into scripture.
Have you seen Dr McClellan's video on the different genders in ancient Judaism? There's a reason most synagogues are lgbtq inclusive. Our rabbi is transgender.

Gender as expression is just that. Expression. A persons biology is just that. How a person chooses to express that is up to them. There are as many genders as there are people.

As a non-binary person with religious trauma because of this topic and related 2SLGBTQIA+ reasons, I cannot tell you how much this means to me. My understanding of Jesus is so vastly different from most Christians, I had to leave the church behind. Hearing conservatives say things like "Jesus is too woke" just makes my brain spin. I had the entire Bible memorized by 11, and attended church twice a week and all of my friends were from church and I didn't do secular girl scouts, but the Pentecostal girl scouts, attended church camp in the summers. I wanted to be a youth minister for at least 8 years, but once I got rejected for my queerness, it broke my heart. I could not reconcile the idea that something as pure as love could be _wrong_. I know there's a lot of things mistaken for *love* in these modern times, but what I feel for my partner is the truest, purest love I've felt outside of that for my son. We've been together for nearly 15 years, and my stepdad told me because we are both AFAB, I'll never understand "true love".

I cant believe how some people today are so medieval in their thinking but we see them wave their holy books as justification for whatever they want. Fundamentalists always do that, often as they oppress or kill people.
Religious fanatics might not like it but humans are animals. And in the animals kingdom, sexual designation is fluid. Some species change their sex as they grow, some even change en-mass if there is a lack of males or females, or in response to their environment. To believe these definitions are fixed is to be ignorant of the facts. But when did religious people ever care about facts or truth?
Alligators are one of my favorites. Their biological sex is largely dependent on the heat of the nest. Mama alligators have carefully pack the dried reeds/plants and mud to ensure different parts of the nest are different temperatures and colder than seasonal temperatures can lead to too many males and vice-versa. These are creatures that predate modern humans by over 30 million years. Our binary is not nature's binary.
The point you’re making is such an important one. Being part of the LGBT community it has become more than apparent that gay,lesbian and transgender people are far more at risk from the general population than we ever have been to them. Unfortunately I can never see this changing and if anything I think things are getting and going to get worse for the Gay! Lesbian and especially trans community. ☃️

"Biological male" is a term used by people who don't really understand biology.
Aside from the genetics (and the 'Y'-chromosome has been degrading since it initially evolved some 166 million years ago in mammals, and has already disappeared entirely from some mammalian species, and is expected to be lost in humans in around 6 million years); sexual dimorphism has a number of developmental forks, each one of which can go the other way (and the default is 'female'). So there is a fairly broad continuum with significant overlap between 'male' and 'female' - including what one finds attractive and traits like physical strength, endurance, intelligence (if that is truly a single, measurable trait, which I am not entirely convinced is the case), etc.
I am, frankly, tired of people who are ignorant of any biology they did not learn in their 9th grade health class make pronouncements on what 'biology' has to say about it.
That's because they're using biology to justify role play, and calling it a spectrum. Just because someone is born with six fingers doesn't mean my five fingers are six because I say so. And the idea that I could force you at gunpoint to agree is fucking mind-blowing 🤦♂️

Moreover, comparing trans and cis people's brain scans shows that a brain in a body that was designated one sex at birth can function like a typical brain in a body that was designated the "opposite" sex at birth, and such a "cross-sex" brain tends to coincide with that person identifying as trans.

This is a problem I point out every once in a while when someone (usually a Christian guy) asks, “What is a woman?” They should ask “What is a man” first before they go on to more advanced questions.
That “man” argument has been going on globally for millennia. Philosophers have debated this problem to the point where you have some cultures having coming-of-age rituals where, if you don’t pass them…or if you avoid them altogether…you’re considered not a man but still a boy (basically calling you feminine without calling you feminine). Then there are discussions on what behavior and characteristics males are supposed to have to be seen as “not a woman,” or worse, “a girl,” or anything close to being feminine and worthy of criticism…because they’re “beta” or weak. Whatever the definition is of a man is held up to a perceived ideal of “manliness” that a guy is supposed to have in order to be respected by other men, and that perspective changes from culture to culture and from time to time. And there’s no universal agreement on what a man is besides not behaving in a way that is seen as weak…a characteristic that only belongs to females. But there’s not even a consensus on what makes someone weak, unmanly, and despised by the recognized ruling elite. Even whole societies criticize each other’s men for not living up to their standards.
Whatever it is, there’s a lot of effort put into distancing males from anything regarded as feminine and trying to make it into the superior class of respectable human beings. But nobody can definitively decide what a man is…beyond them not being a woman…which btw, whatever that is. It’s a very nebulous subject.
I’m now wondering if the definition isn’t “what is a man” (which in almost every place and time is the ideal) as much as “what isn’t a woman.”
If these guys can’t clarify what a man is after all this time, they’re not qualified to ask the next question. They’re just acting like privileged narcissists.
Ask “what is a man” first before asking “what is a woman.” Don’t get ahead of yourself or you’ll look uneducated.

Thank you for addressing this subject in such a clear, logical, and humane manner. As a nonbinary person who presents as more masculine in spite of the fact that I was assigned female at birth, I have faced a lifetime of bigotry. For me to conform with what society thinks of as feminine would be extremely uncomfortable to the point of being emotional torture. This is not a choice. I have known this about myself since i was in kindergarten. For people who accuse us of pretending to be the something we are not, we are actually being honest about who we are. Since we are not harming anyone, we should be given the space to do that, same as everyone else. As for all this drama about bathrooms, we have been sharing public bathrooms and other communal facilities with cisgender people since the beginning of time, with a vanishingly small number of incidents. We are not the problem, we just want to use these facilitiesfor their designatedpurpose. I agree with your assertion that the people who have their panties in a bunch over this need to grow the hell up. This is being stirred up by certain individuals who are trying to distract the public from the fact that they are undermining our democracy and trying to install an authoritarian government. "A man is a man, and a woman is a woman", in a sense, he is mostly correct, but only because his understanding of those words are incorrect.
Gender Identity is something that exists in the mind, not between someone's legs.
A transgender man is a man, and a transgender woman is a woman. It may have taken them a bit longer to figure that out because of sociatal pressures trying to dictate to them who they are based on what they were born with between their legs, but they didn't "become" a man or a woman, they always were one between their ears.
Transitioning just helps align the body with the mind.

Well said. Your analysis was flawless. What Rep. Mace said was deplorable. She suggested it was unsafe for women to share a bathroom with a trans woman - as if they're all sexual predators. She should have been formally censored for implying that.
First of all, he shouldn't be making his personal religious beliefs into law or rules. Not everyone believes as he does. Lastly, hasn't she fully transitioned? What is their problem?

I would think that since she is fully transitioned, that even they shouldn't have a problem with her. But, their hate overrides everything.
I went to Egypt for almost a month as a tourist. Public bathrooms there don’t supply TP. In every Ladies’ room I visited while there was a male offering facial tissue for a tip. The males were as young as eight, as old as eighty. Never a problem, no issues.

As a student of biology and anthropology, and a Christian trying to rediscover God - there's actually a lot of support for a spectrum of phenotypic gender presentation in its connection to sex. By that I mean, even biologically its not as simple as 'xy male and xx female' all the time. Essentially, all the biological characteristics we can see and associate with an individuals sex-determining chromosomes, are dependent on a series of hormone relays that tell the body how to develop what part and when and where to do it. Whenever hormones are interrupted or work a little differently than they should, it'll affect the physical function and appearance of a lot of these characteristics. It's not as though having the two x chromosomes automatically makes every cell in your body know you must be a "woman", it simply means that certain pathways get activated, which results in certain hormones being secreted, which results in certain body parts developing according to those hormones. Even trying to reduce human gender to the seemingly binary nature chromosomes reveals that it's still very complicated and nothing fits easily into two distinct categories.

I don't trust people who spend a lot of time talking about who is in what bathrooms, especially children's bathrooms, like in a middle school.
These creepers spend a not-insignificant portion of their time talking about who is pooping where, and that's just not ok. As long as you're not hurting anyone in the bathroom, and your aim is true, I don't care.
As for people being hurt, it seems to be the good Christians who are doing the hurting.

This is one of the weirder parts of Christianity to me. I'm Jewish, and Judaism recognizes six sexes, and doesn't have much to say about gender at all. Also, Joseph's beautiful "coat" is more probably a dress. The bit in Scripture about not wearing the clothing of the other gender is pretty clearly understood in the context of people trying to disguise themselves in order to enter places forbidden to their gender - men going into the women's baths and the like.

My experience is discussing this with transphobic people is they are not interested in facts. They will continue to maintain that there is a perfect correlation between biological (genetic) sex and gender identity even AFTER they are know about Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (and other conditions). It is a textbook example of not letting the facts get in the way of your prejudices.
One of the cultural shocks I got when I was stationed in Italy in the late 60s was at a bar one night. I went to use the restroom which consisted of a small room with a sink and a small room with a large basin in the floor with two raised areas in the middle to place your feet to squat. That was a minor shock, but not a big deal. When I came out to wash my hands I was shocked to find a barmaid using the sink. That’s when I learned a lot of the public restrooms were open to both sexes.
You reference the Matthew Eunuch verse a lot. I was told the translation for eunuch could mean anyone who did not have sex with women. Hence made by man, means castrated, but for god is just celibacy, and from the womb means men who weren’t attracted to women. Even if this is only mildly plausible, it’s a great negotiation to claim Jesus was ok
with gay men.

@ I’m a hundred percent atheist to Yahweh, El, Allah, Jesus as a deity etc. and if I thought there was a viable, non violent way of eliminating dogmatic religions from the world, I’d be all for it. There isn’t, not in several lifetimes if ever, at this point. Since all religions are negotiated from text, a renegotiation in favor of tolerance and acceptance beats the hell out of the current model. He does always state, some scholars do disagree. What I’ve heard could be completely wrong but if indeed the original word was used to describe men who weren’t attracted to women, in Roman law at the time, as was claimed , then it absolutely is something that could be debated. As a country, we need to stop conflating the words sex and gender.
“Sex” is the male or female bits, and “gender” is the way one acts socially, sexually, culturally, etc. “Sex” can’t change naturally, but only by way of surgery. “Gender” can and does change over the course of life. For example, many children are some level of gender neutral until 3 or 4, then develop a gender that can last until puberty, or change again. Many little girls are what we call Tomboys, which is a masculine gender, and the develop a more feminine gender at puberty... all while being of the female sex.
