I've become a patron since last month. I've also had a big issue with patience and ugliness of my paintings. I've learned that sometimes to achieve something good and beautiful you have to start with a very terrible looking start. I love how you never skip parts when painting, its very encouraging to see it being painted bit by bit and having your voice to guide us. You are a great teacher Karen
Karen, I love the fact that you take the time to explain WHY you are using hard pastels, or the fact that you don't normally "start" with a compositional scheme. You share your insights, instead of just showing us how to paint. You are amazing. Thank you for your generosity!
I had to leave the room for a few minutes and forgot to pause the video. When I got back I thought, "hmmm .... that looks more like a stream than a path." Then I realized you actually HAD turned it into a stream. I love it. Thank you for another great demo.
This is probably one of my favorite demos! From the “messy” underpainting to changing path to water. Love the way it evolved and feel like there is a lot of good info throughout your process. Thank you!
Okay ... that did it. I'm signing up. This video and the one about starting with a BANG are just the most fantastic How-To videos I have ever scene on pastels. I've watched dozens. On to the Patreon page!! Thank you Karen!
Thanks so much!! Sorry that you had problems signing up but I’ll look forward to sharing with you in September! You will have access to all of the content since 2017!!!
@@KarenMargulis I will sign up Sept 1 - it’s on my calendar. That painting of the path from the tunnel turned into a creek just gives me goosebumps! Thank you again!
This landscape is reminiscent in style with many watercolours I see hanging in galleries these day's. Your method has eclipsed all the headaches of backwards masking that creates immense troubles for painter's. Wonderful work.
I've missed you here on youtube! I love your tutorials and this one is extra special, because you started with a plan and took us on the journey when you hit an "ah HA" moment...to respond or not, you did and I LOVE that! Thank you!
Excellent as always, I love how the path turned into a stream! I watched this as guidance on how to paint a reference photo, with great colours not such great composition and have learnt the photo is an inspiration, not a law! Thank you.
I just want to say thank you so much for making these videos. I am just beginning to learn how to use pastels and your videos have been enormously helpful. Thank you!!!!
Just lovely 😊 .... I'm very drawn to road & path paintings ~ will definitely paint along with your tutorial & create my own soon. Appreciate your artistic guidance on all levels 👍
After 50 minutes of trying to register on patreon I realize your site is not going to work today. Will try again in one week (September 1st) so I start a new month.
Karen, You are a wonderful artist and an excellent teacher unlike many artists who struggle with communicating their techniques and decision making to the student. I believe everything I create talks to me about what it wants to become and I respond... Its a conversation, even spagetti sauce. Does that make me a real artist??? I don't know, but I do know that you give me a lot of courage to follow my instincts! Please keep making UA-cam videos for us, we learn much from your generous heart. I do have 2 questions: 1. The video info says you used Terry Ludwigs but you used Sennelier pastels right? 2. It seems you did go back in with some finishing marks in bright orange, yes? Thank you so much
Hi Karen. Thank you so much for all this information. I am new to your channel as well as to pastel painting. I just got a set of oil pastels and was wondering if you have used them or would you do a demo to show how to use? Are they more difficult to use than the soft pastels? Thank you
Thank you! We bought a camper so I have been occupied with that! I also produce content for my Patreon Page so there are always new videos there! Thanks for watching!
At location 24 or so on the timeline I see you used Blair fixative, which we can no longer get. What are you using these days? AND: do you use a permanent fixative as well???
Karen, I am a member of your patron page, and I would like to know how I can see your finished demo paintings and be able to keep working on them , after your demo is finished, so I can take my time and not rush trying to paint along with you? Maybe how can I view just your painting after it is finished and keep it on the screen? Hope you can understand what I am trying to say. Lol
Sure! There is a pause feature/button under the video so you can hit the pause anytime you need to stop to catch up. I always have the finished painting at the end of the video so you can pause the screen at the end to keep the painting up on your screen.
Karen... just want to say thank you for your generous teachings. I am learning so much from you. Going to purchase my first Uart paper and was wondering if 400 is the right grit? TIA ❤️
This video was originally for Patreon so the other compositions would be found on my Patreon Page. I did several focus months on composition over on Patreon.
Il s’agit d’un papier sablé de la compagnie américaine UArt. C’est probablement un papier avec un grain de grosseur 400 (ce n’est pas le plus rugeux mais presque).

Thank you!!
Your painting is so much more beautiful than your reference photo! Kudos to your artistic skills
Thank you so much 😀
I love your tutorials, you share so much knowledge. Your loose painting style is also very pleasing. You’ve encouraged me to let go. Thank you.

Thanks for watching!
beautiful
Many many thanks
I like that insight you have about the under painting. You said it takes away the fear of a blank paper. I’ve never thought of that. 🙂
I love that! The oath was pretty but I love the water! You are so good!!
So delighted to have you back. Another gorgeous piece and informative demo.
Thank you so much!
Beautiful landscape!!!
Many thanks!
I have missed you. Welcome back.

Merci pour cette passionnante vidéo... votre travail est plein de force et de poésie... j'adore vous suivre depuis la France !
Wow! That was amazing, Karen! I had no idea this would evolve the way it did. Awesome.

Very nice. I like the people shadows. It makes them pop.. While still looking realistic..

Thanks for watching! I have never used oil pastels so I’m afraid I’m not much help with them! I need to try them!

What’s wrong with these people that would give you a thumbs down? I hope you block them from ever watching you again the way Stuart Davies does.

Karen super votre paysage j'adore. Quels pastel utilisez vous ? Sec ? Et avec quoi les diluez vous ? Merci pour votre réponse isabelle

When did you demo other compositional schemes? Ican't find them on UA-cam only the tunnel!

I use Uart sanded paper.
Is their any alternate for rubbing alcohol ?
You can use odorless mineral spirits and even water.

Interesting, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge .
