ABBA's Björn Ulvaeus Keeps Tipsy Benny Andersson in Line at Mamma Mia Opening Night (1999)

- On 6 April 1999, ITN attended the opening night of hit ABBA musical Mamma Mia. At the after-party, ITN spoke to ABBA stars and songwriters Björn Ulvaeus and a giddy Benny Andersson about the musical, asking them questions including how they found hearing their songs sung in a musical, what they thought explained ABBA's enduring appeal, and whether they were still in touch with their former bandmates Anni-Frid "Frida" Lyngstad and Agnetha Fältskog. Both Björn and Benny were in good spirits, but Bjorn made more of an effort to answer questions, while a possibly tipsy Benny confessed he was finding it "difficult being serious". Elsewhere, ITN interviewed 90s pop sensation Steps about their love of the musical and ABBA in general. Lee Latchford-Evans, Claire Richards, Lisa Scott-Lee, and Ian "H" Watkins spoke of their excitement at finding themselves sitting a couple of rows away from Björn and Benny, and Lee shared what he thought was the secret behind ABBA's success down the generations.
Today marks the 50th anniversary of ABBA's hit single Waterloo, the song which would win them the 1974 Eurovision song contest and propel the Swedish four-piece to global fame.

Saw them in London in late 1979. Phenomenal.
Me too but also at Birminham Odeon on 10 Feb 1977. First concert of first British Tour and they blew the 79 show off the stage. Arrival top Album & Dancing Queen heading for No 1. As great as they were, in 79 the magic had gone. We felt it and I'm sure they did too.
I met Benny at the afterparty for the VIP Gala Opening Night for ABBA Voyage in London and he looked very well and sober as a judge. A night I will always treasure plus a photo!

They actually both got to the point where they stopped drinking, because they developed alcoholism. Benny's son Ludwig stopped at the same time Benny did because he saw the same happening to himself.
A small theory I have is that part of why Björn stopped was because he didn't want his best friend to fall back into it. That if something would prove how strong their friendship is. Another thing I think is very important to remember is that ABBA's manager actually died from alcoholism, but that was after most of his friends and former colleagues had abandoned him. However, the tragic story of Stikkan can be told in another forum than here.

Benny looks like he would’ve been a great deal of fun after a few glasses 😂. But he has respectfully chosen a sober life for the last 20+ years. His comment that he didn’t think Mamma Mia had potential outside England was hilarious.

Well he admitted he was an alcoholic, but that was kept relatively quiet all those years.
he had reason to celebrate albeit went a bit over the top. he has since seen the light and is alcohol free. good man.
He admitted he was a terrible alcoholic. Probably one big reason he and Frida broke up. He could get mean and controlling. He was con's drunk in interviews during ABBA days and would take digs at and talk over her. He seemed to relish in it.
