  • AVOID DISASTER!! Installing your weight distribution hitch the RIGHT way! Read your weight distribution hitch installation instructions! When we initially installed our weight distribution hitch we did not follow the directions. Initial weighs showed that it wasn't right. In this video we correct that installation, measure and re-weigh our truck and trailer to verify proper installation. This should make for a much improved towing experience as well as making everyone safer while we tow.

    If you shorten the chains one more link OR add more washers that will load the front axle more and take some weight off the rear.

    You need to add another washer to your spacer on the head. The maximum links of chain hanging is 5, adding another washer tilts the head back resulting in lower bars and less links hanging. Your bars will be a little more parallel with your frame also.

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  3 роки тому +1

      I tried that setting as well and it resulted in the weights being way off from where they should and the overall feeling of the tow being wrong. I may try it again at some point and tweak a little but right now the settings I have are the best feel and weight distribution.

      @@AngellFamilyAdventures my front axle empty is 3505 lbs and with my trailer on its 3461 only removing 45 lbs from my front. My rear axle is 2469 lbs empty and 3152 with the trailer adding 683 lbs to my rear axle. My tongue weight is 815 lbs verified on the scale. The last 130 lbs is actually transferred back to the trailer axles. The trailer axles are 4940 lbs without the chains hooked up and 5070 lbs with the chains hooked up. Basically what I'm saying is that I think you have a lot of room for improvement. I actually ended up adding 2 washers to my hitch and 4 links hanging to get to this point, you'll have to play around like you said. But I wouldn't be happy until your front axle weight is less than 100 lbs different from unloaded.

      @@kevt9442 But as soon as you load the vehicle (and trailer) with hundreds of pounds of people/gear, much of it in the back - some of it behind the rear axle - doesn't that change all of these measurements? Like adding 200 lbs of bikes (plus a bike rack) over the hitch for one trip, then leaving it behind for another trip.

    Your honesty with making a mistake the 1st time and learning from it is appreciated. I wish more of us could admit that. I think its fine to weigh the truck with the wife dogs and kids in it, as you would on a normal trip. This would be better to get a real idea of your legal limits under actual use.

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  3 роки тому

      Very good point. My intent with weighing it empty is to know my starting point. Then on each trip we will stop at a Cat scale first to see where we are at vs our limit and be able to see each axle vs our starting point. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment as well!

  • @Doug-gp2qw
    @Doug-gp2qw 12 днів тому

    I bought that exact hitch when I bought my F150, based primarily on price. I would not buy another WDH that uses chains. It's very important to torque the bolts to 250 foot pounds. The little crescent wrenches will not do that. You need a larger impact gun, or a 2 foot breaker bar to get it that tight.
    When weighing your truck ideally you should have the gear and passengers in the truck that you will normally carry. That way you have more accurate weights on the axles. When you go to the CAT scale, weigh it with with the passengers in it, or other gear to approximate the weight. Then park the trailer in a parking spot, not blocking the scale or fuel lanes. Unhook and drop the trailer. Remove the bars but not the hitch. Go back to the scale and select reweigh. It will only cost $4 for the reweigh. Then you can figure how much weight the trailer is adding to your vehicle, and to which axle.
    When backing with that style of WDH, disconnect the anti-sway bar. Otherwise you might damage the hitch, truck, or trailer.

I've now upgraded from a 1/2 ton to a 3/4 ton and need to adjust my hitch accordingly. Unfortunately, since it was set up by the dealer, I never received the instructions, so now trying to figure it out on my own. Your video should be a tremendous help. Thanks!

      100% agree on the sockets. I've since purchased the proper socket for mine and keep it in my tool set in the RV with my battery powered impact. Makes adjustments so quick and easy. I also use that impact for the manual stabilizers and have used it for tire changes (all of those take a 19mm).

    You have to be getting close to your max payload number for your vehicle. That is a very important number to be aware of at the scales, and why it’s important to weigh prior to your trip once fully loaded with all cargo and passengers

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  3 роки тому

      My max payload is 1581 lbs. With the tongue weight, all passengers, and extra gear loaded in we are right around 1300 lbs. Still well within payload specs of the truck. You are correct that it's important to weigh each time before you leave on a trip, especially if anything has changed from a previous trip. Always know your numbers.

    Must add driver and passenger and tow vehicle cargo weights to insure equalization. Trailer contents also to be most accurate. Truck isn't empty towing a trailer down the highway at speed.

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  3 роки тому

      Thanks. We always weigh fully loaded ahead of any trip. The initial weighs were only to ensure proper set up of the hitch. That allows us to see what the base weight and distribution is. Any other things added to the trailer can be shifted to allow proper distribution and the weight of passengers in the truck will add weight to the truck but won't impact the distribution of the trailer weight across the hitch.

      Thanks! Yeah even with older vs newer the build of the frame and weight of the truck makes a huge difference in how it feels when towing. Manufacturers can make small improvements and increase tow rating without it feeling any better. Example is my 2001 Ford Excursion. It is rated at 10k lbs tow capacity. In 2004 they changed the hitch and went with bigger bolts and increased the tow capacity on them by 1000 lbs. No frame changes or anything. Just bigger bolts.

    It's better to add suspension support system(like timbren) or upgrading to heavy-duty suspension to level out your truck and trailer than adding WDH. WDH may level out the sack and from bouncing but puts a lot of stress to your trailer frame and in time your(in general) frame will bend and or fold. This comment is for the general viewers.

    Good presentation. But the snap up chain Weight Distribution systems with the seperate friction bar for sway control are antiquated. I stopped using them ten years ago. A 2 point or 4 point system like an E4 or a Husky Centerline TS are huge improvements in sway control over those old snap chain systems.

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  2 роки тому

      The only real involved part is the bracket that goes on the frame. Just loosen the sway bar and with the camper attached hook the sway bar up to your hitch. Then get it roughly halfway extended and attached to the frame bracket. Mark the hole location for the bracket and drill pilot holes. Then use the supplied self tapping screws and Tighten it down.

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  2 роки тому

      Do some research and please don't just take my word for it, but my understanding is the process is the same. Only difference is that once you're set up with the proper weight distribution your vehicle will relevel itself where mine just stays about an inch lower than normal ride height. Again, do some checking elsewhere to validate that. Safe travels!

    Thanks for the info, really appreciated. I have the same Husky setup, where did you get the 1 - 1 1/2 inch settled vehicle info from? The instructions I downloaded say 1/2 inch settled different front to back fender, don't think I can get that with my Silverado 2500HD pickup. I did get 6/8 inch on my first attempt and it drives some much nicer! Do you think my setup is good or should I add more tension to the bars?

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  11 місяців тому +1

      It's been a while but I believe that info came directly from the instructions. If you're that close I'd say you're good. The biggest thing for me personally is ensuring that the ride feels right. If it's comfortable to you, has major noticeable issues, and your weights are right then I'd say roll on down the road.

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures

      Best bet is to take a couple of large adjustable wrenches with you. The bolts on the hitch require a very large socket size, which may not be the same on yours. That would be the main part to be adjusted if she already has it set up on the trailer.

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  3 роки тому

      My comment of having the right tools was in reference to having sockets and a ratchet instead of adjustable wrenches. It makes it a lot easier, but it's not impossible with the wrenches. I'll see if I can get the socket size today to help out, but also take the wrenches with you.

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  3 роки тому

      Looks like it would be about 28mm. A 29mm socket fits on but is a little loose. Being such a large socket size that's another reason why I didn't have one. Buying one for this one use seemed pointless.

  • @northrider23

    It is my understanding that adjusting the airbags after setting up the WDH, it negates some of its benefits. Safe towing.

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  3 роки тому +1

      I had heard that as well and I ran at first with no pressure in the bags. It felt ok but not 100%. I even adjusted the bars and everything with no air pressure. When I put 15-18 psi in the bags it feels much more steady. Less sway and bounce. Ultimately you've gotta run what feels right. If you're uncomfortable with how it feels then it's not right. I don't use the airbags as the primary support at all. Just that little bit of extra.

    • @geoffmooregm
      @geoffmooregm 3 роки тому +1

      Yes lifting the truck with bags relieves some tension off the bars the same way jacking the trailer up makes it easier to install and un-install the chains. However, just jacking it up an inch with the bags won't do much. You could always add a link for more tension and double check what you did with a tape measure or scales.

    • @AngellFamilyAdventures
      @AngellFamilyAdventures  3 роки тому

      If I went up a link I'm fairly confident it would be far too much. I've actually contemplated running with one less link because the bars are already slightly off parallel. I just haven't had a chance to try it out without the family in the truck. I want to set it up and do a short local run to be sure it feels safe.

    • @geoffmooregm
      @geoffmooregm 3 роки тому +1

      @@AngellFamilyAdventures I find on mine that one up or down is noticeable in the way it feels and the weight you feel in the steering wheel. But it is never anything that feels dangerous. I know now that I leave 3 links loose if I do not have fresh water and 4 links loose with a full tank. Works like a charm. I have rear bags (factory air suspension) and adjustable shocks. So the truck levels itself and I put the shocks on firm and it is a great experience. My wife even offers to drive a lot. I even followed her once in my work car (she is not insured to drive it) and she drove it all the way to site. I asked he how it felt and she just said "perfectly fine".

      @@AngellFamilyAdventures Dude F those measurements the bars are angled up.. You need more tilt. With a load like that put all the washers in and tilt head max. Then pick the chain link . Are they 1000 lb bars. Good your learning but those bars need to be level or down slightly. You will get more lift with more tilt.
