    Super result. I would recommend getting seamless glove arm socks, they come in grey on alixpress 5€ or so. I use them for all my coloured cosplay. Saves so much time :)

    another former homestuck cosplayer here- i totally prefer cream based stick facepaints now, its a lot easier to blend and do contouring in cream with a makeup sponge and then just diligently set everything after. i still use water based paints on my neck down but i do remember having to try VERY hard to get anything to look blended on my face only for the makeup to start crumbling at the convention

    For the black eyeshadow, if you can do the wet glossy eyeshadow look I think it'd bring so much dimension! Looks amazing 💖💖💖

    it was so cool seeing ot come together, the base colour and contouring is really the part when you have to just trust the process with body paint but the eye makeup and the rest really tied it together, I have no suggestion for blending unfortunately but trying out the white highlight I think is a good idea, especially in the inner corners of the eyes, I like to do that sometimes even in regular make up anyhow, feels like it makes the eyes more shiny ^^"

    I loved watching this. Jumping in and trusting the process. Just trying. Even hearing her say "my nose is so itchy" and feeling like she looked silly was so relatable

    Wow, that turned out so awesome, oh my gosh! I use grey bodypaint for my Caduceus Clay Cosplay from Critical Role, and of all the colours I use grey is definitely the hardest to contour and make look realistic. It definitely all comes together once the like Make-Up-y make up, aka. Eyes, Brows, Lips, are done though!
    One tip for a smoother finish I might have is using a sponge to blend out the paint and and also to apply the powder? It works for me but it's definitely a matter of trial and error.
    I am so hyped for your Raven Cosplay! I have been reading DC comics for ages and it's always so cool seeing Costume people whose work I love cosplay from media I also love 🙈 can't wait to see it all finished!

    It looks great, blending powder over waterbased makeup is definitely hard mode. In the past Ive had some luck with "diluting" the eyeshadows by dipping the brush in translucent powder first, it reduces chance of overloaded pigment splotches too. I honestly hate using liquid bodypaint as a base (unless its with airbrush) since its so annoying to blend. If you're having issues with dryness especially maybe consider a creme makeup instead? Ben Nye ghoul grey is one of my favorites, plus the (ebay knockoff lol) makeup forever flash palette. Im greasy so I have to powder to hell and back but its worth it for the ability to blend!! Also! matte colors for shadows and shimmers/glitter for highlights, and adding some faint freckles and moles go a long way toward skin "realism"
    dont mind me i just really like painting my friends and myself weird colors :D

    This reminds me of why the matte mega rainbow palette is a possible need for cosplay. Matte eyeshadows are my prefered approach for contouring all sorts of face paint!

    The look came together super well! It is always amazing to see how much contouring helps to make an unnatural skin color look natural!
    As someone who has done full body paints in basically every color under the sun, I do highly suggest using a creme- or oil-based body paint instead. They are much less drying on your skin, making them more comfortable to wear, and less finicky to apply without streaks in my experience. As long as you powder them well, they are often longer lasting than water-based ones. Alcohol-based paints are actually the best for wear-ability, but they are difficult to apply evenly without an airbrush, difficult to get off again, and generally way more expensive than other body paints. So I personally only think they are worth it if you are going to be wearing them for a long time or the painted parts are going to be touching a bunch of things that you can't risk transferring paint to. I also definitely prefer applying with a sponge in a stippling motion to prevent both streaking and picking up already applied paint, but that might be a personally preference thing. :)
    I also highly suggest using liquid lipsticks for your lips instead! They are available in so many colors now and won't need constant touching up every time you drink something. I've gotten dehydrated at cons before because I didn't want to ruin my makeup!

    Just a heads up about using eyeshadow for lips. In the US, eye shadow pigments are generally not intended to be used for lip products (or anything in contact with mucus membranes. I discovered this while making bath bombs.) If a pigment is okay for lips, the supplier will say so. I doubt that eating some eye pigment over the course of one day of cosplay will kill you, but it never hurts to be on the safe side. Plus if you bought some DIY lipstick base and pigments, you'd be able to reapply easily.

    • @lizzyrbits1283
      @lizzyrbits1283 Рік тому +3

      Question, how does this work with the fact that eyes have mucus membranes too and are more sensitive than lips even? Like obviously ingestion is different than falling in incidentally. But beyond that? Just curious :)

    • @HarryLovesRuth
      @HarryLovesRuth Рік тому

      @@lizzyrbits1283 No idea. I'm not a chemist or toxicologist. I learned about this because my kid wanted to make bath bombs.
      If I had to guess, there's a difference between approved for eyeshadow and approved for lining your waterline or for mascara. Lining your waterline is obviously contacting the conjunctiva, and mascara is has the potential to run into the eye in a way that shadow doesn't.
      Since "dose makes the poison," I'm guessing that the FDA works from the idea that any powder or cream shadow that gets in one's eyes would be incidental, while makeup applied to your lips will be consumed as you lick your lips, eat, etc.
      The pigments for bath bombs need to be "safe for mucus membranes" because one is sitting in the fizzy water and it contacts one's genitals.
      Again, not a chemist or toxicologist.

    Thanks for showing us your learning process! It takes a lot of guts to share that.
    I really love LipSense for lip color that stays put all day, doesn't transfer, and can be layered for custom colors. There have been a few purple colors (that are safe for lips). If you can find a distributor with stock, she might have some. (I'm one of those 😉)

    The makeup turned out so pretty!!!! Your tear reminded me of why I don't use Mehron for body paint at conventions. I accidentally stained a cloak red because the mehron paint rubbed off. My favorite body paint for conventions is ProAiir. It's an alcohol based body paint. I've used it for my Hannah Alexander"s Princess Mononoke and Ren Faire outfits. it will last because it isn't waterbased, but it is really hard to get off.

    Oh man, this brings me back (I am also a former HS, also from like 12years ago, and have cosplayed Beast Boy). I used to mix those two colors for my grey facepaint too, way back when. I still kinda cringe about Homestuck but dang it if I didn't learn a lot about cosplay from it and make lifelong friends.
    It looked like you just did a light dusting of the translucent powder, and I think blending would probably be easier if you went over your whole face a couple times with it. Another blending trick is to go over everything with a damp sponge after laying down the color with the brush; definitely agree that the brush is the way to go to get the whole layer down. You can also use fixing setting spray after the base and before anything else to really set it in place (which I used to always do anyway to avoid any paint smearing). Personally, I would stick to mattes for the contouring--either a very light hand and very blended out with the black or invest in a grey matte shadow--and I would have used the silver "We Vibin" color for your highlight, since the base is grey. And then if you want to mix in a little of the matte desaturated purple just to add some color (almost like a bronzer), I would do that after the contour.
    For the lips, my concern in using a pigment on lip gloss or chapstick is that it'll come off the first time you eat or drink anything. Nyx has some great color options in the lip suede lipsticks and lip liners. Also, I just found out that the liquid suedes are discontinued but they do still have their bullet form (the Suede Matte Lipsticks). "Violet Smoke" "STFU" and "Doom" are also purple tones that I think would go well! Plus Stonefox is a blue grey (which I believe they still have in the liners) and "Alien" is the pure black.
    My personal favorite liquid lipstick is the Liquid Catsuit from Wet n Wild. They have a blue-undertone grey similar to Stonefox called "Loose Change" and in their Fantasy Makers collection, they have a grey "Sleepy Hollow" (which I used to have and it was more of a neutral grey) and a black called "Widow's Peak" (which is actually on sale right now, I just checked the website). IMO, the WnW lippies are much less drying than the Nyx ones but you get more color options with Nyx.
    It all definitely came together in the end!
    (Also, I'mma slip my ship bias in here and say that with your dark green hair and the makeup, you looked like a Beast Boy/Raven child and I'm here for it)

    just a lil tip on accidentally going too heavy on blush, if you powder over it it'll help blur it out and downplay the bright colour! i work in cosmetics and accidentally go too crazy on blush ALL the time and this tip saved my life LOL

    A couple things Ive done and learned from a friend who used to do a lot of hs and other full face paint, a good primer to start (like the hard candy 24h one ) and actually activating water based paints with 70% rubbing alcohol (obvs not around your eyes though!) The Elf translucent powder works great, and definitely letting it sit for a bit before brushing it off. My fjord face paint lasted an entire con day before like this with very minimal touchup!

    For face shaping I’d stick with matte colours and avoid using anything with a shimmery or a glittery finish except for highlighting.

    Suggestion for mouth colouring, bilberries or other blue/purple staining food or candy. Bilberry coulour stick to the tounge and skin but not so much teeth, billberry pie (so tasty!) makes my moth cool toned a couple of hours after eating.

    I enjoyed watching your process and it turned out so well! I would love to do makeup looks like this but I have eczema which causes my skin to turn red, swell, get itchy, dry and flaky when using most cheap makeups. Also I live in Australia. I have found liquid based makeup is less likely to cause problems than powder makeup.
