Dead iPad from Indonesia - Sorry, I can't fix this and keep the lights on!

- After more attempts with 3u, I was able to get to "Updating NAND Firmware @ 20%" almost consistently. This was with a solid white screen on the iPad and then reboot back to DFU. Also, I was so fixated on demonstrating a power-related fault that I forgot to check for DFU mode FIRST! Enjoy my misery! :-)

The problem when your name gets out that you're a top class technician, is you get the hacked jobs that no one else can solve. But, you can't run a profitable company spending hours on a repair when a replacement device is available at a cost close to the repair bill.
Your honesty is exemplary.
Thank you! Yes, the couple hundred videos showing myself fixing prior repair attempts is a self-inflicted wound.. lol We will get through this!
@@ststele Get a protein shake and make the magic happen. See my reply to the top comment on the video.
It doesn't matter you didn't fix it, what mattered is that you handled it like a pro and that's why I am subscribed.
Well yes however keep the youtube model going, send to the next youtuber who will work on it for youtube money. Because otherwise we are all risking to get dependent on the corporations who always say "buy new" even when they break it with software updates. Plus these devices could get bottlenecked from chip shortage again.
How much is the hourly rate?
Handled professionally. You can't fix everything for cheap no matter how tempting it is to try. We also know yt content costs time and therefore money to make as well. So here's just a small thanks for taking the time for us as well.
You're quite welcome. Thank you very much for your generosity!
Jason, I always appreciate how much your humanity comes out in these videos. I think sometimes we forget as technicians that even if we all want to solve every problem (I think? I know I do), sometimes it just doesn’t make sense. It’s important to have limits. Thanks for always showing us your process. I’m so glad you’ve been uploading again!
Jason, we need more repair etc like you, funny, very good explanation as to the causes of the problem and adding humor, but also fixing the devices.
really miss ya man you havent posted in so long hope u and ur family are doing well
Knowing when to call it quits is one of the hardest lessons I've learned (and still go down rabbit holes sometimes). Well handled, sir.
Thanks for uploading, fix or no fix your videos are always a treat to watch. 👍
We miss you no videos for 6 months... hope all is well....
Love that home made tool for attaching the power supply to the board without having to remove the board. Also no risk of damaging the battery connector. I’m definitely going to be using that idea from now on. Great video Jason.
I was thinking the same thing. Way easier and less chance of damage than my jank kapton tape and alligator clips method.
I remember seeing a commercial version of this tool for sale somewhere. They're probably only $2 but I chose to make one.. lol 👍
Your videos have helped me out before, I saw the exact same fault with 20% Failure at 3Utools with the same model just last week. I too thought it was probably a NAND failure or something but client was not concerned about data so I for the hell of it tried the Anti-Recovery Flash mode in 3Utools - it went through and iPad working normally again. Just in-case you didn't already try this option you might want to give it a go.
good info man
That’s the trouble with being a goto guy for the difficult jobs! You made a good decision, if there is little chance of fixing it in reasonable time (or at all!) it’s best to call it BER and move on!
Thank you for a great video. Looking forward to the next one.
thank you very much for everything you do Jason, I learned so much from your way of diagnosing and from your technique on your UA-cam channel thank you and long live sts telecom and microwelding....♥️
Hello! Thank you so much! 🙏
Hello from Indonesia, im really enjoy your repairing video 💪
I love what you doing those job like other.. good job for what you did those for show us enjoy your video. I appreciate it to learn from yall. 💯
Well, i really understand why you stopped going forward, in your position i would do the same, but this is the most clean reworked board i ever seen :D
Just checked in to see what you're up to. Hope you're doing well. Best wishes from the UK
Completely understandable approach. Given your extensive knowledge of these devices you would know best when to proceed and when to call it. I've been trying to start up my own business, but I have to keep a family of six in the equation. The hours you can sink into a repair is definitely a factor.
Good call. 👍
Good call.
keep on keepin on
Hope all is well, man.
Thank you. You too. Will show my face here soon.
😢 we need you back ,bro.
love you always sir
A little tip when unscrewing the plate over the lcd connecters... use a little crosshead bit that goes into the end of multi ended screw driver... there's enough grip to turn it with your fingers and causes a lot less stress on them lcd cables
Thank's for the upload, i appreciate your honesty by a lot, it's getting rare to hear real honest comment on youtube..
Cant wait for your next upload.
Thank you
Good call
Every time I see more of your videos, there are more burn marks on the blue mat!😄 But I love what you do and your videos ♥️
lol, yep! Underneath looks much worse. I should buy a new mat! Thanks for commenting.
Just curious if they already told you they would not pay for the repair? Hopefully there was communication to you that would let you know the expectations and if they would be willing to pay your fee for the repair. Thanks for sharing your technology repair knowledge in your videos!
You did right by ending the repair attempt when you did, earning a living to support your family is why you work and you need to be efficient to achieve that.
Don't know if you had set it up but after you said "want to see what happens when you connect this to a computer right" at 10:00 UA-cam played an ad. The timing was perfect. Connecting iPad to a computer causes an ad to play.
Wow, the ad timing is entirely done by a computer! I could choose the timing by hand but I only enabled monetization with their default settings. Also after UA-cam finished checking this video, they suggested a new title that was based on words I said in the video! "Dead iPad Pro from Indonesia - Can I fix it?" is what they suggested.
this is why some shops have a fee for working on prior-attempt devices, and for B2B expect information about what was done. Nice work though!
Thank you! I have to start charging for the lost time or turn them away. If people decide not to send them then that's time I can spend doing something else.
Good job..from Bangladesh.
you can take the tip out of a screwdriver kit to use to unscrew and screw the ipad pro lcd connector shield
I know the pain. I used to repair JDM car dash clusters and touch screens for about 20 years, but in the final few years so many clusters and screens came with failed prior repairs that I had to give up...
mmmhmmm, I can see this happening. Those days everyone was modifying their cars too!
No one does it better than Jason.... it has been quite a while brother, hope you are okay... come back with more content soon
Thank you. I really appreciate the comment.
Where have you been Jesse? How you doin? Hope everything ok over theree
Missing your videos man....hope you're doing ok :)
Do you have a recommendation for a USB C current meter? I did notice the one you link to in your videos, but that does not seem to be available. Thanks!
I had few cases when one of top ribbon causing a problem like you have. Try to run this iPad with unplugged top flexes from mainboard.
My friend, is it possible for you to explain or provide me with the dimensions of your work table and the method of installing the microscope?
Hi Jason I have an iPhone 5, after ten times I tried to put a passcode it was disabled.
all I care about is getting the data from inside I don't care about the phone,
how can I do that. By the way, I don't have a backup on iCloud or on my computer
and I want to know if after ten times the data has been deleted, can you help me.
Is there a charge for looking at it even though you didn’t fix anything?
Where are you sts telecom? Are you ok?
How you been doing so far? Jason. It's been while...
Yeah It's not good going down the rabbit hole .... Good call ... I see you made the switch to Linux How do you like it so far what are you using ?
Thanks. I'm a life-long Linux user but recently switched my bench from Windows. That's Debian 11 with Xfce. No fancy distro here :D In trying to use it for recording, I've ran into typical linux problems with graphics and hardware compatibility. For instance, the Logitech Brio will do 60fps only sometimes and when 60fps @1080 is an option, it can also do 4k @ 30. For some reason it is falling back to USB 2 and I'm not sure what the determining factor is yet. Not a deal breaker! Plus I was expecting such nonsense & can probably fix it.
Hey, are you okay? Been a few months
Jason pleaseeee publish some new videossss
I think he died after not fixing this one, an indounesian hitman was sent 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Where is Jason ?
heya oke you tryed it and it didn't happen for this costumer you can win them all still a great job
Maybe you should make it a policy - if someone has already tried to repair the thing and didn't succeed, you charge by hour and material. Because in such cases the chance for success goes way down, if it was something trivial the person before you would probably have fixed it, plus there's additional risk of that person making even more damage.
Honestly, with your personality you could make a really good go as a full time youtuber. but then you would have to get your wife to start editing your videos for you and that would mean spending more time with her. ;)
nice vid. thx as usual.
Thank you!
❤❤
Time is a killer if you have commitments. ie, you need a quick way to know if it's feasible.
Unfortunately from what I see, a quick swap of ID-ed chips to another MB would save time, but then you would have to charge extra for the new MB, ie, probably costs the same as faffing about with the original MB. Even though this is a quick way to know if it's worth fixing, if you go back to the original MB you have to solder the chips back off and on again - ouch! -.
The only way I can think of doing it quickly is have a pogo-pin adaptor iPad you can drop/clamp the chips on to, like ABD's ziff socket C64. This saves the solder off, on, off, and on again, plus you need to re-solder anything someone else has attempted anyway. Someone needs to invent a chip tester like they have in the retro computer world - lol -.
Me personally, I would attempt it - it would niggle at me -, but I don't have commitments.
Hallo Jason, Iam your fans from indonesia too, Jesus Bless U
Where do you learn linux tricks like that syslog?
I think hands on is best! I've just grown up with it. :-)
This is nothing new, going back 40 years to much more simple stereo systems in the 80s if I saw a lot of soldering had been done on a solid state board it was usually an impossible fix. You had to fix the last person's screwups before you could even begin to repair it. Good call, this would have been a nightmare. I'm old enough to remember when people would pull the tubes out, take them to a drug store for testing, then put them back in the wrong sockets. Those were still repairable because the tube stereos and TVs could handle abuse, but modern electronics cannot.
It really does suck when you want to show your skills to make good content or promote yourself and it ends up with you getting the worst possible jobs. Sometimes you just have to say no! Glad I'm not the only one lol
👍👍
Any chance for more videos and videos which are prior repairs? Come on man we want watch you!
Yes, I'm pretty sure it is unavoidable. lol! Thanks

Dindonesia padahal bnyk2 master2..iPhone...😀
Once you walk on water they expect you to feed the masses with one fish...
"Oh well " moment can't fix 'em all
cool you are using linux but waht distro is it?
That's Debian 11 with Xfce on my desktop.
@@ststele ♥ I use Debian 11 KDE. Been a Linux guy since early 90's. Started out using KDE desktop and just never changed. Linux=FREEDOM! 😉
@@ststele cool i daly drive archlinux with gnome it works perfectley and for how long are you using it
@@randyr.parker2698 thats righti use arch since mid 2020 but i used ubuntu the first time in 2016 on a pentium 4 and it was a horrible experience (i am 13 so in 2016 was my first computin experience) then i used windows for about 2 years then 2 years linux mint (perfect beginner os) and then switched to arch (bad for beginners) and i have no windows installs left (i also have a server with debian 11 for satisfactory and a public webserver)
Maybe the customer should think about getting hosed by Apple and buy a much cheaper Tab that will not break so easily.
Cant win em all. I like this channel because you are NOT a full Time Utuber
Thanks!
Im glad my mechanic dont do like you people depend on you
I’m sure you would get flat turned away if you bring your car in for an oil change but already tried and put water in the engine plus stripped out the drain plug only didn’t mention it first. Even better yet, got a price for the service before bringing in such non-sense. I get overloaded with that sort of thing. I can choose to say no or my family doesn’t get to eat.
send the PRA's to jessa
Too bad they didn't send it to you first.
word call in my bahasa is call nyebokin,as technician im lazy to fixing that.
@STS Telecom, Hey Jason could you do me a huge favor? I saw you wallpaper on your desk top. Could you send me a screen shot of it with out all the icons and what not, as my wife is into Diamond art, and would like to send the pic out to have made up as a diamond art painting? Thanks I would appreciate it very much.
Yes, no trouble! Here's the scenery wallpaper I think you're talking about:

@@ststele outstanding yes thank you very much! 👊🏼
Why not with the owners permission put a new/used board in it
Well that's unexpected and the fact that they send you the ipad from here i would think they are your fans or have those tingling curiosity if it can be fix but hell if i have the money i also send all my broken stuff to you love your works 👍
Ps for the ipad user
Jauh amat bang service nya kan ada roxy wkwkwkkw
Thanks :-) Yes, I feel really bad for having to say no because of business reasons. As a UA-cam channel I should be fixing even the most craziest of things. Not possible for me at the moment!
@@ststele that understandable coz your video i started fixing basic stuff my self well my first cap replacement mind you it's not those small smd one its still harder than it look in the vid i cant imagine how hard it is to fix mobile stuff and at fast rate
Nice try but good for you not going any further could of opened a massive tin of worms
So what does it tell us about apple contsruction techniques if a couple of thermal pads and some double sided tape around the edges of the heat sheild can rip components from a logic board? Very poor manufacturing and quality of solder. That's what $1k plus gets you. Junk. Thanks for the vid anyways.
Capitalism and Free Enterprise. The market drives it all. God bless America and you
cpu r
Dude, nice try
You are not the last chance repair guy, remind people of that.
Stick to the unmolested devices that work perfect and just need a polish lol :-D
Are apple phones becoming too reliable, what a horrible thought :)
Now there's an idea there! :D Screen cleaning service. All profit $$
Much more talking than fixing
Good call.
