Such a shame Dalton didn't get more movies. Love both of his films. The Living Daylights was actually the first Bond movie I saw.
The Living Daylights is my third favorite film of all time.
Top 5 in the franchise for me. I understand why it doesn’t resonate with everybody, but it all works for me.
I used to have no time for licence to kill, one of my favourites now.

A Bond film that was of its time. And has stood the test of time. Thank you Timothy Dalton for giving us such a fun thrill ride of a movie! Great seeing you as James Bond in Die Hard/Lethal Weapon mode! I'll certainly keep rewatching!!
There are several key elements: MGM/UA limiting the budget which forced the move to Mexico and then having to bump up the facilities there by actually constructing stages. The film was processed in Florida and it never has the traditional Bond polish in terms of the visuals.
But the BIG one and the one that explains EVERYTHING is the 1988 WGA strike. This meant Richard Maibaum was forced off after initial drafts and Michael G Wilson was on his own. It’s commendable that the film turned out so well but knowing the co-producer was stuck having to do the script solo explains the inconsistencies and the unfortunate inherent cliches. The film manages to elevate itself over the inherent weaknesses of the story and the production hassles that shouldn’t have been. MGM/UA really screwed the film over and has been a thorn in everyone’s side since the fall of UA. And then they dumped the film with a pathetic marketing campaign in the biggest summer in film history.

Joe, your comments about your quest for content quality are not lost on me. I love going back to the old videos and podcasts and seeing your craft improve year over year. Please keep doing these and know how appreciated and enjoyable they are for us fans.
The late scene with a cheerful Felix Leiter near the end is the one scene that is unforgivable. If the series had established the Leiter/Bond relationship was established like in recent films, there would be more to stand upon with the revenge plot. Once again, Dalton’s performance sells it However difficult to swallow.
Top 5 for me. Is it a masterpiece? No. Does the story have holes? Yes. But it’s a fun ride nonetheless with memorable characters and moments. Dalton is great in this.

You leave my boy David alone! It's not the fault of the UA-cam Bond channels that Wilson and Brocolli take so long to make the Bond movies.
Great concept and the right guy to do it with, but the execution wasn't very good and the timing couldn't have been worse. It was the 80s, and just 4 years prior, James Bond was seen as a goofy, almost cartoony, action hero who picked up women. There was the odd gritty action film in the 80s, but James Bond wasn't associated at all with that, so the script needed to be terrific to work, but it was just a PG-13 version of a bad R rated 80s American action movie. The Director's Cut is R-rated, but that still doesn't change the fact that the overall delivery was terrible, which is a shame, because Robert Davi is solid and has good chemistry with Bond, and Cary Lowell is great, but she's just written badly, like a lot of Bond girls. A lot of the problems with bad or lacklustre Bond films stem from the writing rather than the casting. Since the 70s, Bond films have had a hard time making history and basically just follow it, with mixed results.
re: Multiple Felix Leiters. Jack Lord was asked back for Goldfinger. But Lord wanted a big raise (and better billing). The producers declined and went with Cec Linder who was *three months younger* than Jack Lord. Lord always played younger than he was.
Cec Linder was younger than Jack Lord??? He looked like Jack's father!!!
Jack Lord was born on Dec. 30, 1920 while Cec Linder was born in March 1921.
I prefer the scenes in Mexico which at least show some style. The stuff in Florida feels low rent and crappy like it was meant for a made for TV movie.
God dammit . I love to have you back, but you gave me a hard time with this. Dalton is a perfect Bond so I forgive a lot.
Dario suspects Bond because maybe he recognised him from the bar earlier in the film? As Bond was merely wearing a dust mask and didn’t have his whole face/head covered…
Q is there because many fans including yourself would have complained if he wasn’t.
Although time is a very abstract concept in the first 20 films, clearly a number of years have passed since the Connery films where Q was clearly a stickler for the rules. Within those years Q may have just mellowed in his old age and gained a bit more respect for Bond which he did not have before? After all he was at Bonds wedding and would have known Bond lost his wife and later M was replaced. As Q was getting ever so closer to retirement and not being as concerned about risking his career, maybe he thought to himself- “Why not help 007!? The current M is a bit of a cock, Moneypenny is worried sick, Leiter is an ally, no one is out there helping Bond and without my gadgets which have saved him so many times in the past, he is toast”!
A lot of nitpicking and scrutiny here from someone who clearly has a strong dislike for and vendetta against Licence to Kill. Oh and Gladys Knight’s Licence to Kill song doesn’t suck. It’s great! “Got a licence to kill and you know I’m going straight for your heart”!
As you have probably guessed by now, I’m a fan of Licence to Kill.
Howard Weber says THIS IS HOW THE MOVIE SHOULD HAVE ENDED > After Bond sets Sanchez on fire , Pam Bouvier gets out of the truck , runs towards Bond and says " James , are you alright " ? Then she asks " What happened to Sanchez " ? Bond replies " I showed him my Felix Leiter." Then Pam sits next to Bond and as he puts his arm around her , the camera slowly pans up and away and the credits come on with music.
This has to be the BEST review of License to Kill Ive ever seen and is on level with 'RedletterMedia' logic! Thanks for putting all your passion into it as it made me laugh very much ;)

Licence To Kill is one of my favourite Bond films, along with The Living Daylights. I love the darkness of LTK, and that truck climax cinematography is just awesome. The locations were excellent and I like the theme song/ Michael Kamen score. Actually think the Bond girls were strong too. Pam Bouvier can shoot guns/ fly planes. Compare that to Stacy Sutton or Kara Milovy (who can’t do any of that & feel shoehorned into the scripts).
For me Lupe is trapped with Sanchez in a coercive control type situation. She can’t leave as she knows her life is in danger. She is conflicted when it comes to Bond. Maybe initially she wants to protect Bond by telling him to walk out of the Casino and never come back. But secretly she does want Bond to stay and finish Sanchez off (so she can get her life back).
I don’t read too much into the “I love James so much” line either, as I think it’s not to be taken literally. It’s just a light comedy moment in a dark film (which it needs for overall balance).
Interestingly Carey Lowell in the Bond Girls Are Forever documentary said that Pam never officially slept with Bond, so if you read the boat encounter like this, it makes the ‘door slamming scene’ later make sense.
I do like the fact that Q has plenty of dialogue and significantly helps in this one.
Timothy Dalton plays the role very well.
For my personally Quantum of Solace is the weakest Bond. I also don’t like Diamonds are Forever, From Russia With Love, OMHSS. Most of the Connery ones are forgettable (except Goldfinger which is top tier too).

Disagree, Pam is the best Bond girl ever, also remember that there was more than $5million on the plane but Bond lost the rest in the struggle.
James Bond does Miami Vice and 80s actioner it's a solid effort but the timing was bad Miami Vice was cancelled that year and Batman and Indiana Jones offered different types of action and adventure plus Lethal Weapon 2 took the crime action thriller movies into new heights and in way Bond was left behind instead of leading that's why Goldeneye was a hit because it basically took Bond back to it's espionage roots mixed with the latest technology of the time
Your defeating the object with regards to Timothy Dalton as Bond. He played as it was originally intended. He was simply the best Bond along with Connery. Cary Lowell and Talisa Soto were fine. I'd rather watch him than Roger Moore but I liked Live And Let Die and Spy Who Loved Me.

One of my favourite Bond films, for a long time my absolute favourite, especially when I was reading the books for the first time. I've also missed reviews by Joe Darlington, so I'm looking forward to seeing how, if at all, his views have changed and evolved!
As a film student, this was a great video for me to watch. I've always loved your videos, but since I've been studying screenwriting and production, I've come to think that you have the most well thought out and helpful critiques of the James Bond films on all levels. I used to think you would be too harsh, but now I see what you're talking about more often lol. And the polish on this video is super dope. I can't wait to spend way too much time watching this over and over again lol

Very well made done analysis but disagree with many of your points. License to Kill is one of my favourites in the Bond Canon. That's what's great about all the films, we'll all have our favourites.

Fleming did describe Leiter as perhaps Bond's best friend, like a brother. The movies never really brought that out, and somehow L2K over-did it. I always liked David Hedison in that role. I was a young teen when Live and Let Die came out. I could imagine him in that role in the book.
And yes, his relationship with Della was strange, almost to the point of creepy.
I love the comments. We criticize Bond films for far less issues, ranking them near the bottom as a result, but we have a film that is a Lethal Weapon, Miami Vice ripoff, feels made for TV, weak bond women, No John Barry score, plot holes galore and we just love it. No reasons given. And despite this 46 minute video detailing all its problems, and there are many... We just love it. This movie viewed as underrated (don't know where that is the case) is actually overrated of late.
Ive heard this time and time again. You can enjoy it for what it is, but we have to be realistic in that the movie didnt do very well for very good reasons and its not just because of the lack of Promotion or that it was released in summer of 89 along with other big hit movies. I actually don't mind QOS, but I fully understand why people don't like it and they have a point.

I disagree. I love Licence To Kill because how different the movie is. Its not supposed to be a typical Bond mission. And just to show how close Felix Leiter is Bond, he was the only out of the Mi6 crew there for Felix on his special day.

I put LTK in the same category as OHMSS - interesting experiment but the execution is broken in too many places and ultimately we get superior iterations on the themes of vengeance and love in subsequent entries. Plus the 80s War on Drugs propaganda just adds to the overall cheap feel of the film.
"Fuddy-duddy." Damn straight. There seems to be some idea that Bond can only be cool when surrounded by fuddy-duddies. So misguided. Jeffrey Wright was the best Felix Leiter since Jack Lord.

Nice analysis. But I really don't get why everyone is so hard on this title song. I think Gladys Knight's vocals are amazing. There are certainly MANY worse Bond tunes to pick on.

The Felix leiter criticism is one of the problems I had with it. I didn’t see LALD but I definitely think that David hedison was a perfect Felix for Moore but he sooooo does not work with dalton he’s like nearly 20 years older than him (19 to be specific) and as someone who read the books Felix and bond are supposed to be roughly the same age so I agree that John terry as underwhelming and forgettable as he is in TLD would’ve worked much better in LTK. Also the ending was too safe and cheery if it ended a little bit more bittersweet like “it’s done but at what cost?” Type of vibe I guess it would’ve worked out better
Would bond leave everything to avenge Felix? in the movies I’d have to agree that because the character was constantly being recasted so it wouldn’t really be convincing. In the novels on the other hand, he would’ve ABSOLUTELY done it no question about it considering how much they’ve gone through

Both Dalton's Bond movies are about a serious spy/ agent fighting realistic bad guys -- a corrupt Russian General in cahoots with an arms dealer, and a drug lord. This is why I like them, and Dalton as Bond. I wish he'd made more realistic Bonds like these. Yes, you can nit pick the stories, but that's hardly the point. As for Wayne Newton's religious creep in the movie, I love it, as I loathe religion. Look behind churches and what do you find? Corruption and money and sexual hypocrisy. I thank the Bond producers for including this angle back in the 198Os.
Brilliant review, And to think that the Invisible car took Heat, Nothing compared to this movie, Q Branch will build the car, James T Kirk will command the Enterprise and the descendants of Timothy Dalton will STILL be trying to pull a Wheelie in that truck near the end.....
I think Dalton was ahead of his time - with a much darker take on Bond. The film has some rough edges, but it's never the less an entertaining well made thriller, that main thing I take from it is that it gave Dalton the opportunity to portray Bond the way he wanted to do, which I think his previous film(The Living Daylights) didn't.
While I love the film and it's solidly Top 3 for me, I acknowledge that there is indeed merit to your criticisms. The tone is uneven. The filmmakers only went half-in. Took chances but played it safe at the same time. And yes there are significant plot holes. But that's a common problem in Bond films. It comes down to how entertained we are so that we can overlook them. LTK always entertains me. Similarly, Skyfall is very entertaining but there's so much that makes absolutely no sense. I can overlook it. If you don't find LTK sufficiently entertaining then you will be bothered by the plot holes. Watching Dalton and Davi together is a joy.
TLD(1987) looked gorgeous! LTK(1989) looked indeed like a TV movie... Although the same director(John Glen) and DP(Alec Mills)... Probably a deliberate decision of the producer Cubby Broccoli or studio?
Probably my favorite Bond film. Dalton was apparently the only actor to study the original novels, and had little patience for the campy puns and other cliches of the Moore era which were wearing thin. This was hard-core Bond before the Daniel Craig era, and broke the stereotypes of what came before. Great villains, ladies, and action pieces too.
Note: I take a little exception with the "Bond wouldn't necessarily care" about death line here. I suppose one might question Leiter and Bond being close enough friends that Bond is the best man, but these deaths are sadistic - the villains raped and murdered a woman who had nothing to do with it, and mutilated Leiter by feeding him *partly* to a shark and leaving him alive with that horror. I'd rather critique the portrayal of Leiter at the end as being too little affected, as opposed to Bond - Dalton definitely sells the character's motivation, and the fact that the plot isn't motivated by an outlandish supervillain and is rather personal helps make the film stand out all the more.
i've heard your points before with David, and although they are good points, a lot of them hadn't occured to me before. I mean when you get down into the weeds about the miami bar, i just think you've way, way ,way overthought this movie. You even say if you applied this to other Bond movies there'd be problems. Not a perfect film...but not bad.
The final truck chase is great as reminds you of raiders of the lost ark, which is funny as indiana jones was modelled off bond. The biggest problem with it is when they made the truck just lift the wheels up and when it was riding on its side. There are other issues but that action sequence is let down by those comically ridiculous scenes which has stuck with me. I still think the film is my favourite because they decided to try something different and they did a pretty good job considering. It certainly had weight as goldeneye the next film in the series took some elements.
Dario probably wanted to kill Pam at the meet or see how she would react and make sure theirs no further action, seeing bond, Dario might have thought bond was a dea or government agent.
Every Bond movie has plot holes, but it seems that when you don't like the movie you start obsessing over them. Look to the plot holes in your own soul, my friend.
LTK is a fantastic movie, but perhaps it was too much, too soon, for someone's second film. It would have been better if audiences had been given 3 or 4 movies with Dalton, in order to really get used to him first. I wish Dalton had started in 1981 with FYEO. They should have also had David Hedison as Felix in a couple of Dalton movies.
Great point! I completely agree. This should have been his third film! Or maybe have another actor play Leiter for all 3 films, that way the friendship/revenge story would have been more believable.
@@Beingjamesbond in my ideal world, FYEO would have been Dalton's first Bond film, so that LTK would have been his fifth one. And yes, the same actor should have played Felix for a few of Dalton's movies. And finally, I would have introduced General Pushkin in earlier movies, instead of using General Gogol. That would have made the scenes with Bond and Pushkin in TLD more meaningful

Fascinating analysis, LTK is my favourite Dalton bond film, even though it does have its flaws. However there’s too much entertainment value to be had for me to let it bother me. I think Quantum of Solace is a prime example of a bad serious bond film, ironically it’s kinda like Licence to Kill but without great villains, actions scenes, locations and characters. The Q argument for licence to kill is a bit dubious, I recall it was Money Penny who sent Q out so I don’t think it’s that much of an issue. In a way this new version of Q was already established in The Living Daylights and even in the later Brosnan and Craig films we see Q evolve into being a little more laid back.

This was the most realistic James Bond movie until Craig arrived.
I really love the new intro! I’ve rewatched License To Kill lots over the last couple months a few times, including last weekend. For me, it gets better and better, largely because Dalton and Davi hold it together and I love Q being involved more in the action. If anything, It make me wish Dalton did one or two more films. I’m sorry, but I enjoy License To Kill more than NTTD, despite it’s flaws and despite the great skill involved with making Bond 25.

I love it, but I can't fault any of your criticisms. It feels like the crew were too stuck in their ways by this point to follow through on delivering the kind of tone that this concept and Dalton's performance deserved.
They were trying to move Bond past the cartoonish last few Roger Moore movies. Dalton was a preface for the Craig grittier more real Bond movies which were more true to the novels. I never understood why License to Kill almost killed the franchise; it's a great Bond movie with a great villain and henchman (and even Wayne Newton for some comic relief). The bond girls aren't good but it really isn't about the sex, it's about Bond mad as hell and no one was gonna stop him from getting revenge.

Not So Fun Fact: The Menendez Brothers, who killed their parents in Beverly Hills in 1989, told the police that their alibi was that they had gone to see Licence To Kill, which had just opened.
I love parts of LTK but something always seems off about it. Also imo the music by Kamen sounds very Die Hard and Lethal Weapon and out of place
Great analysis of License to Kill, and the sound and visuals on all your videos are awesome - you're obviously very talented and put a lot of work in + such a great voice - I can hear why you started out podcasting! I loved Living Daylights which was my first cinema Bond, then I was too young for LTK...and while I love Dalton and elements of it - such an unusual entry...would have loved more Dalton Bonds in the early 90's to allow him to broaden his portrayal...I wouldn't wish Moore out of anything but I can certainly imagine a Dalton For Your Eyes Only. Anyway great work as always Head of Section!
I think the characterization of Q is a plausible extension of The Living Daylights, where he had started down the wacky inventor road. Most of the criticisms are fair though.
Q is much worse in Octopussy.
Sadly, I agree with almost everything mentioned. Both of Dalton's films are toward the bottom of my favorites list. I think he had great potential but for how the producers and directors found themselves trying to move away from the Roger Moore era. I was happy to see Brosnan get his turn.

I always have a theory about this film. It’s not a great bond film, but it’s a great film. Normally I look at bond movies and say that’s a good bond film but as a film maybe not as much. Here it’s the other way around.
Did anyone read about all the spook goings on during the filming of Licence to Kill (trucks starting their engines in the middle of the night etc). I would love it for someone to do a video on this some day

I admit during my "review" that LTK is a weird one to pick on while there are far sillier films, but I think that's exactly why it provides such a treasure-trove of commentary. Crazy Dracula LOL. What the hell were they thinking making him look like that? I think they were still trying to sell Dalton as Bond to the public and that's why they had Hedison play Felix lighter again. Trying to make that connection with another 007 movie. They knew they were taking a gamble having Bond in a revenge film and resigning from MI6, so I think they were trying to keep as many connections to earlier outings as possible.
Great review. I remember coming out of the cinema in 89 feeling horribly disappointed. It's such an ugly film with a story that's just not that interesting. In certain parts Dalton overacts terribly.
I hear that alot from people back in the day. but for some reason it tends to get better reviews these days
I always enjoy your thoughts and videos as for bonds motivations I always see it as what happened to him on his wedding day. This is the catalyst that opens up all his anger and emotions and we get a more satisfying vendetta than connery jokey performance. Only if Lazenby had returned and put his performance in against Blofeld than I would agree. To me it's the sequel we never got to my all time favourite bond movie ohmss. Joe, you've rapidly become my favorite Bond reviewer. Even when I have a difference of opinion with you about one of the films (or some aspect of one), I always understand your perspective. After your discussion of 'Dr. No' with Scott, I re-watched it and finally was able to appreciate the film for its own strengths and have fun with it, instead of seeing it as a stepping stone to the fully fleshed out EON Bond. I've always found 'L.T.K.' uneven and its script issues are reflected in the mixed visual 'polish' of the production. Musical continuity does matter in films and John Barry being unavailable hurt the establishment of Dalton in the role, as much as the veering into other story territory and budget necessities. I don't mean any disrespect to Michael Kamen, but Barry had the ability to make his score sound 'organic' for that film. Kamen does very well with the quieter moments, but I'm often too aware that there is a change of the fundamental Bond sound.
Joseph, I have an idea for your channel. This idea should keep your content going upwards. Okay, recruit your buddy Scott to join you in analyzing those Bond movies (and perhaps all of them) that were not rated high on your lists and discuss them again but this time discuss where you would improve those particular Bond movies. For instance, not making Jaws find that young girl in Moonraker and keeping Jaws scary like in The Spy Who Loved Me and maybe eliminating the gondola scene in Moonraker also. You could have so much fun with this and it would be educational to yourselves and your YT viewers. (I apologize if you're done anything similar to this in this video as i have not seen the whole thing yet).

Despite its faults....overall its good points off set them. It remains one of the better entries in the franchise.

Really njoyed your thoughts, and I so agree with a lot of them but for some reason I do have a Lot of mercy on those points and the movie. Can see past a lot of them and easier than some plotholes in lets say Skyfall. But this is just me. As others mentioned, the novelisation of LTK is recommended as well, deepens a few points. Della being an old friend of Bond and the implication that he introduced her to Leiter for example. Anyways hope for more like that soon. Welcome back!

It would have made a better story if Lupe were just pretending to love Bond to get what she wants. I agree with you about the treatment of Q being fundamentally inconsistent with his relationship with Bond. A better way to play this would be to start with Bond and Q doing their usual cat-and-dog act, and then later Bond goes to Q behind M's back and has to persuade him to help.

I'd have to write an entire essay to express just how much and why I disagree with you, but I do big time. Some of your points are valid or at least somewhat valid, but a lot of them just don't hold up to scrutiny imo.

"There are no bad James Bond films." - Joe Darlington. I disagree. "No Time to Die" is a very bad film. I say that AS a life-long James Bond fan. I can excuse some of No Time's lousiness on the pandemic and reshoots because of delays caused by the Covid pandemic, etc. But only up to a point. I feel that Daniel Craig's Bond in 2021 has moved so far from Ian Flemming's original character as to be almost unrecognizable as the character we first saw in 1962 with Sean Connery's Bond. The series has lost touch with its roots. And worse, the series is now catering to non-fans by submitting to "woke" activist choices which no fans of the Bond series demand from these films. "No Time to Die" is a total mess; and it is a bleak, dreary, unpleasant, depressing movie that is simply no fun to watch. For all its faults and shortcomings, "License to Kill" at least tries to be entertaining. Compared to 2021's "No Time to Die", 1989's "License to Kill" is a sheer delightful masterpiece.
I disagree. Even though I can understand NTTD being considered a bad BOND FILM for some fans, I still consider it a good/decent movie IN GENERAL (not perfect... obviously).
Yes, it's different from the classic concept in the previous movies and in the Ian Fleming's novels, but that's cool for me. I welcome a different take on the Bond mythology once in a while, as long as it keeps an entertaining story and the classic Bond elements (NTTD has cars, martinis, women, guns, exotic locations, intrigue, action and of course... a badass James Bond).
I rank NTTD and License to Kill in 13th and 12th place respectively in my Bond film ranking. I think both movies are solid/decent Bond films with flawed but entertaining stories that try to give the character a human & edgy dimension, but also emotional depth.
@@007johnsnake No Time to Die's script is so full of plot holes it looks like swiss cheese. It is easily the most poorly written of all James Bond movies. The villain's main scheme makes little sense, his motivation is never explained, and pretty much everything that happens is a plot contrivance that happens simply because the writers needed it to happen. They turned M into a villain, while the nanobot technology ends up being whatever the writers need it to be to advance the story. James Bond is constantly emasculated and defeated in his own film. It is a film without a hero. The massive amounts of reshoots are apparent. The film is literally a total mess, easily the worst edited Bond film ever made. It is a VERY bad film. The craftsmanship in good storytelling simply isn't there. In years to come, NTTD will be seen as THE worst Bond movie ever made.
