    I blame Saweetie's label. they saw the success of the city girls and decided to make her a "ghetto princess", then they saw Doja Cat and now they're trying to replicate that. its so hollow.

      I feel like that’s what happens when you pursue a career based on being pretty rather than being a true creative with an actual vision. Saweetie seems like a sweet girl but it seems like her brand is “be pretty, make money” and that can only go so far on the creative side of things. Most other artists who have long term staying power are either unimaginably talented, a visionary or some combo of the 2.

    I think people forget that the question in the Dua Lipa lawsuit isn’t “Do these songs sound similar?” - it’s “Did Dua Lipa and her team intentionally listen to this song and make the choice to rip it off?” Which is extremely difficult to prove in court. Also both of those songs sound like “Rosa Parks” by Outkast, and a lot of other funk/disco/reggae music.

    • @helixier6629
      @helixier6629 2 роки тому +18

      there might be someone in her team who got sent a bunch of indie songs to "get inspirations" and that person picked which ones they wanted to rip off without her knowing. if they work for other artists and not just dua lipa it might be how they do their work and they just kept getting away with it🤷

    I used to think that levitating was a copy but when you watch some independent music theorists who are big on UA-cam like Adam Neely he really breaks down why this isn't actually a copy, because if anything, both of you songs are copy of Rosa Parks by Outkast and the same chord progression is used by Electric Light Orchestra in their song Evil Woman from the 70s. And not to mention it's the Charleston Rhythm which is an African American style of music and rhythm so common it has a name. It's not impossible for things to be completely unrelated with sound similar. Nothing new Under the Sun coincidences do happen

      Although the two songs do sound very similar, I'm inclined to believe it's a coincidence on the grounds that Artikal Sound System's song was pretty obscure, meaning the chances of Dua Lipa or anyone on her team hearing it are pretty slim. Also, of course, there's the older OutKast song that's better known.

  • @NJDMashups
    @NJDMashups 2 роки тому +271

    Here’s one detail that barely gets mentioned with the Dua case,
    OutKast’s “Rosa Parks” was released YEARS before “Levitating” and the reggae band song. And if I heard correctly, Dua did mention somewhere that she was influenced/inspired by Outkast for Future Nostalgia. I think she even credited Outkast for Levitating; which btw Outkast has the same melody for “Rosa Parks” intro
    So if anything, unless the Reggae band did credit them, Outkast should be suing that band. Like that band should be the one to talk about plagiarism.

    Some facts about the Levitating case:
    •The creation of Levitating, from voice memos to starting samples, has been documented. Dua improvised the melody over the beat when her producer initially showed it to her.
    •The rhythm she used is so common it has its own name(charleston) and is a staple of disco and funk music.
    •Live Your Life was only ever on soundcloud and enjoyed virtually no success so the chances of it being on Dua's radar are minimal at best.
    •The exact melody both songs use can be found in Rosa Parks by Outkast(who Dua has cited as inspiration for FN). Which was released wayy before both Levitating and Live Your Life.
    Sidenote: Typically these types of cases bring in a musicologist to explain to the court how the song is being ripped off. Artikal have failed to get a musicologist to vouch for them, probably because everyone with surface-level music-theory knows that Artikal don't have a leg to stand on.

    Saweetie is an insta baddie with a side hustle in music - which is painful to watch.
    As for Doja and disco, in her recent albums, Doja has also bounced around from style to style (remember go down?) and tried everything from rap to the most commercial sounding pop.
    Everyone and their brother has been doing 80s revival stuff in recent years. It’s not surprising that saweetie would try it.
    After all, she has no direction of her own as an artist…because she’s not an artist. She sings.
    But Doja was equally jumping on the band wagon and just trying everything until something stuck.

    There’s a lot of evidence that this “reggae” song wasn’t even released in 2017 as there is no actual record or commentary more than a couple weeks back being that the soundcloud track can be edited and comments remain the same if a new one is put in its place. There is literally no comments more than 3 weeks old. And SoundCloud is the only platform the record supposedly appeared on at that time. Everything else including videos have newly been put up. It appears that they are trying to pull a fast one.

    I just feel like there’s soo many female R&B artists nowadays, it’s madness. And it’s the fact they pretty much all come into one. Saweetie, I like her, but she’s nothing unique, whereas with Doja for example, she is. Very talented, good singer, great dancer, non-stop hits, has a great persona, etc, etc. Doja STANDS OUT, which is rare in this day and age, so does it surprise me another artist MAY be copying? No.

    I would say Saweetie's music presence is mostly depending on features on other artists' (demi lovato, little mix) songs, which was how Dosha was first known for. However, Dosha managed to introduce herself to the industry with her biggest hit, Say So. Saweetie on the other hand doesn't have any standout singles and her label is still trying to push her to be the next hit maker when her talent is not as incomparable as Dosha. Tbh, nothing about Saweetie is extraordinary in terms of rapping style, skill, talent, songwriting, rhythm. I guess most people don't even know who the hell is she or just know her as some random artists that appear on random songs.

I don't like how everytime the song becomes mega hit, there will be always those little artists out of nowhere to imo just claim that the song is copied so they can get credit/money/attention. Same for Dark Horse which maybe sounds even more similiar, but i'm glad Katy won at the end bc there is a exmplanation video which i hope same will happen with Dua.
