How To Fix the Steering Groan/Rubbing/Pop Noise 80s-95 IFS Toyota Trucks with New Steering Stop Caps

  • This was driving me crazy, but thankfully the solution is very simple. Anyone can do this job.
    This noise is distinctly different than a bad CV axle, which will be clicking when turning. This noise only happens when the wheel is at full steering lock left or right. You will also be able to visually inspect if the cap is worn down like I show in the video.
    This is the store where I bought my caps, not affiliated with them but received great service:

    I replaced to CV axles and ball joints before finding this video. Such a simple fix! At least my truck needed those parts replaced anyway

    Thanks so much for your videos. I recently bought a 1993 standard cab pickup, and I have a list of minor repairs to address. Several of your videos have provided good insight and ideas for me to incorporate. Thank you again --looking forward to your next Yota video!!

    Oh my goodness thank you! I have this exact noise on my 92 and my 95 and didn’t realize it was so cheap and easy to fix! Thanks again, glad I’m subscribed to you so I saw this

      Awesome! Yes it is a super easy fix that anyone can do, I was surprised that other than some very old forum posts there isn't much on the internet about these caps, but clearly the rub all the way down for just about everyone at some point

    I didn't notice that my stop caps were worn through to the bolts, so I'd put on a dab of grease which didn't last very long. Installed new caps per your video and that fixed the noise problem. Thanks much!

      I prep those caps by applying epoxy, external to the cap. Once the epoxy cures, then I install the caps onto the bolts. This procedure makes those caps last significantly longer.

    Well TY so much! I also have a '93 like several others, and finally decided to do something about that awful thumping at wheel lock.

    I have all new suspension and still have this groan, I will have to change these out. I have a set of tacoma style wheels on my 91 truck im going to be swapping to some old steelies so if you're interested in them id trade them for something. I'm in Salem.

      Oh nice, hopefully that solves it for you - appreciate the offer, for now I'm happy with the wheels I have currently on the truck

    Nice repair! No telling what that truck is worth in today's crazy market. Used Tacomas cost more than new ones, even those older trucks have always held great resale value. When I last looked any Toyota truck was almost $10K wether it was an 84, 94, 04, etc.

      Yeah they have definitely appreciated in value! I've toyed with the idea of upgrading to an 80 series Landcruiser or an FJ Cruiser or a newer Tacoma but it is all big $$$

      I would just keep that one, myself. I still have my 84 Nissan Pickup I bought in 1990. I bought an 07 Ridgeline the May after covid hit pretty cheap, should have bought 10 then!

    • @TravisTutorial
      @TravisTutorial  8 місяців тому

      With the steering wheel at full lock? I'd make sure the rubber caps haven't fallen off...but beyond that, you get into possible CV axle territory. If not related to the steering it could also be a mount for either the engine or transmission, or even some slop in the u-joints on the driveshaft

      I don't think so, seems to mainly be a thing for the late 80s/early 90s IFS Toyota trucks
