This is where we Norwegians toughen up our kids, we throw them in at age 13, and if they survive for 5 minutes, they are worthy of becoming a citizen of Norway.
Yeah, I understand what you mean. But for some reason, I've gotten a phobia just looking at some photos of big waves (tsunami) and maelstroms. I've gotten many nightmares about those kinds of things for a very long time now, and I've had alot of those nightmares recently.
Thanks for sending me this video VampireZombieX. I'm with you. I think if I lived near it, I would have nightmares about it to. It almost looks like it is boiling.
Hey @xinanorway, I was hoping to license the use of this video in an upcoming Australian documentary special looking at whirlpools and weird ocean events. Do you have a contact I could reach to discuss? Thank you
i live nearby, looks alot bigger and more intense when you see it , feel it and hear it for real. and no its not always like that, But if you were to travel there you would be able to see it every day its a big fjord behind it and open sea outside of it. when tidal forces make water go up and down, this narrow pathway makes the water go faster because its pushed into it. henche creating this show. alot of fish there too:) search for dykking i saltstraumen and you'll find people diving there :)
yo tmb vngo de cuantarazon...CR rules!!!! mira vos..una maravilla oculta hasta que lo vi en CR...seguro hay muchos lugares increibles como este y por eso seguire en CR...=D
this is the place i made one of my first scuba dives, first one that had deeper then 3 meter of water. i had no diving certifications back then. and i dived right in front of her feet right there
Good idea, some facts about Saltstraumen: Every six hours, 400 million cubic metres of water at speeds of up to 20 knots (40 kilometres per hour) rush through the 150-metre wide and 3-kilometre long sound connecting the Saltenfjord and the Skjerstadfjord.
Just looking at it gives me the creeps... if I fell in there, I would probably have a blackout before I drowned. :oD Just a photo of it makes me feel jumpy.
That kind of current is a death knell for any diver caught into it unprepared. I wonder if anyone tried to use a satellite or unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) to determine the direction of the currents and/or scan the surround areas.
There is a smaller on on the West coast of Scotland. Researchers attached a rope to a weighted dummy, with a recording depth gauge attached, and dropped it in. It was pulled down to 300ft quite rapidly, and the pockets collected gravel off the bottom.
@traurigaberwahr100 Not really. A simple google search would show dozens of sources saying that the old sow is the biggest only in the western hemisphere, and that the norway whirlpool is the largest.
Saltstraumen the narrow sound joining saltfjord and skjerstadfjorden has the strongest current in norway far stronger than the moskenesstrom immortalised in poe's maelstrom Boating here is dangerouse but fisching excellent.
if u try to surf ure going down faster than the fishes xD... try diving tho:) seen alot of divers in the past few years...even some people trying to fish from the bridge ^^
I love the little wire to protect people from falling into the "world's strongest tidal current".

U are idiots if u do this
123TauruZ321 wtf I hope this is a joke..
@@ego371 Ofcourse its a joke :p
123TauruZ321 how u know dis
Seeing how weak my fellow Norwegians are, it didn't work very well.

It looks like one of my worst nightmares... creepy, but very nice video. Thank you for uploading. Maelstroms like that gives me goosebumps. :o)
chuck norris had to swim across everyday to get to school
no im right on time
m4tpoons Chuck Norris was 6 years early
An incredible sight but extremely deadly. I'd certainly keep my distance.
people are diving in it
It’s so beautiful, all those hades of blue. Every color water takes on in its blue hue is present
Amazing. Many thanks for this. Baby is really cute too.
Thanks for sending me this video VampireZombieX. I'm with you. I think if I lived near it, I would have nightmares about it to. It almost looks like it is boiling.
That might be a very interesting location te place a water turbine!

search for dykking i saltstraumen and you'll find people diving there :)
How the hell can 8 people thumb down nature?
Maybe if it is a poorly produced video? I liked it, but some may not be judging the "nature" aspect of it.
20,000 leagues under the sea!!!
Roper Lee McAlister Descent into the Maelstrom :)
Would a whirlpool actually pull a swimmer down or would it just spin them around endlessly?
Where is this exactly? I can't find that bridge on g.maps. I will go through Bodo, and wouldn't miss this!
Esto es impresionante, gracias CR, yo también vengo de ahí xD me acabo de enterar de la existencia de esta maravilla de la naturaleza
I don't understand :/ isn't it supposed to like _whirl_? this more looks like it's just a fast flow. I'd like to see some object thrown in there.

cool story bro

So what happens if you do get caught in it? Maybe with diver's gear on?
How about electricity generation? There must be a lot of energy there.

Thanks for your information. I red "A Descent into the Maelström" , a short story by Edgar Allan Poe .
Just looking at it gives me the creeps... if I fell in there, I would probably have a blackout before I drowned. :oD Just a photo of it makes me feel jumpy.
I really do not get it. Wheres the vortex of this whirlpool?
@HSSDamian it was actully meant to correct the person who said it said it wrong
this thing drags you down with about 25 miles p/h tidal currents, no way you can resist that by swimming!
sacrifice the baby to the ocean gods do it
+drago barz shhhhhh
Can you swim at 37 km/h?
Looks like the Talbot Bay in Australia. Only wider.
you spin me right round baby right round like a record baby right round round round
LOL! But I hope you'll keep away and be safe for those maelstroms? Just the look of them makes me feel unsafe. :o)
That's pretty interesting phenomenon.

Shane Kennedy Corryvreckan whirlpool. The dummy reached 262m.
thats awesome
really want to take a kayak out in that
great source of sustainable energy
I don't know, Lamnont... I've heard that this thing can swallow a human, the current are so strong, so it is dangerious.
How is the water so blue o_o
Hva med å bygge et kraftverk her ?? :-)
Right. Well, if I fell in that thing, I would probably get a blackout of fear before drowning.
I fought Davy jones in a maelstrom once
Calm down mate, just appreciate seeing the video!
wasnt this in a book that i read?
You'd have to be a little careful crossing that eddyline!
I agree with you, fisken.
been there, great
xinanorway do you know....
eehhhh m english is bad..
no i mean the other side of the river is that a iland?
My grandpa told me that my family was from this area. He told me about this tide.
that man is getting ready to sacrifice his baby to the tidal current gods
nature = badass and awesome!
This is not the world's fastest tidal current. I don't know which is, but look for "Skookumchuk"and see some real speed.
looks like a good place to hide treasure
@traurigaberwahr100 Not really. A simple google search would show dozens of sources saying that the old sow is the biggest only in the western hemisphere, and that the norway whirlpool is the largest.
That's rather scary
Upon seeing this, I wonder more about the math behind it than the bad assery of it for some reason.
I live there ! no kidding, it's awesome
still Live there.?
lol its really windy on the top of that bridge
did he dieded?
no, he liveded.
Yup! This is pretty spooky. :o)
Yes.
Pero bueno, ¿todos de CR? Leñe, impresionante.
This is new site for baby swimming lessons?
It's a natural thing, got nothing to do with the bridge. read the description, some good info there :)
Actually, they pull you underwater and unless you find a way to get out - highly unlikely - you drown.
impresionante
I'd jump in, then I'd swim AGAINST the current
Very nice is it, I saw it on august 18+19+20th
well theres...one small isle betwen the two..then theres a huge what i belive is and isle (from what i know and seen it is)
@buckweed226 actually a man has, and he came out alive. (i live close by) anyways it was on national tv
that looks awesomely weird
cool!
should have thrown something in for demonstration purposes
Ibretlik paylasim

The poor fish must be all dizzy.
Although it is a different situation, the Pororoca is much more violent and raw....
no, but there is a super powerful current that would drag you right down...
@robertlamb178 best idea EVER
all that would be demonstrated is gravity.
@Tomayonnaise Of course not. I have even visited that place in real life.
¡desde cuánta razón para el mundo!
@theSGSboy lol Nice Odyssey reference.
big brother? compared to saltstraumen mostly maelstroms are like....little brothers..it may not be big but its the world strongest maelstrom
I'd hate to be canoeing in that...
the water in the middle looks like it is covered by sticky goo or tar... and felt like i could stand on it!!
what a water pressure..maybe there a volcano under that sea..
they are lucky to have green free electricity... forever.
parece ser que cuanto cabron es el mejor sitio para anunciarse
@clayguy33
Now that's a great idea!
que miedo pero guau paese te felicito es muy klindo esto pero dsa miedo
Now I see...I couldn't exactly imagine that by reading Edgar Allan Poe's story...
if u try to surf ure going down faster than the fishes xD...
try diving tho:) seen alot of divers in the past few years...even some people trying to fish from the bridge ^^
@robertlamb178 He dies. Just some days ago a man fall into this water and died.
@iSewil It's not scary...I live there!
chuck norris use that as a swimming pool
@UnknownGuitarist1993 I don't plan on it. I nearly drowned in a 3 foot high waterfall :)
DAMN NATURE YOU SCARY!
ive been there :D
