I may have been five years late to this, but the emotion behind this song scares me. That desolate feeling, the sound of a lonely electric guitar and ragged voice that sounds a bit on the edge of tears. Brought me back to the first time I heard Bon Iver, Keaton Henson, etc.
I first discovered Bad Books from the small fraction of Forest Whitaker that plays in the final season of the show, they are probably now my fa vourite band around and those that criticise followers that only came here from HIMYM are wrong to do so, it was that which brought me here, but I stay for the musical brilliance
That last fuckin' part. Damn. I don't know why, but it kind of makes me want to cry. It breaks me heart a bit. From 2:55 on. The guitar is so haunting/hypnotic, and the lyrics are morbid. But that last part is so damn beautiful in a way, and I mean in a "love" way. Not beautiful as in he got his head cut off, but the part that's her saying "It's so good to see you back here again", how she misses him so much that even his head will do. Of course, that's just my interpretation, I could totally be over thinking it, it is late at night lol. But I don't know, something struck me when "she" said that. My buddy showed me this song last night and I'm forever grateful.
@@speed7bump I know your comment is 6 years old, but thank you for that suggestion! Good song. Have you ever heard Cover Me Again by Cage the Elephant?
I discovered Bad Books before Manchester Orchestra. Recognized Andy’s voice immediately! Pyotr is my absolute favorite song and to know it’s inspired from history of man. Wow!
Putting this comment here for you Chris. I've had feelings for you for so long and this songs reminds me of why. You see the beauty in life more than anyone else 8ve ever met. I love you for that.
I heard is song years ago and I totally forgot about it. then a week ago I was reading about a king killing his wife lover. then I remember that there was a song like that, it took me a whole week to find this song
Currently making a side quest for my dnd campaign that's heavily influenced by the story they tell here. Basically finding an unmarked grave with a headless body inside, and as they read the mossy gravestone which gives them visions of their time together, worsening and getting closer to his final moments until they see his death scene if they don't follow the thread to resolve it. All I'm trying to say is thank you Bad Books for making a song, that, me from 6 years ago loved so much that it found its way back into my life all these years later...
It may be a really messed up way to punish someone but if you've ever been cheated on you may have had similar ideas for the person your loved one cheated on you with. Honestly I have a time or two. Love makes people pretty fucking crazy.
Has anyone looked open the meaning behind this? It's about Peter the great killing his wife's lover and putting his head in a jar for her to look at. I interpret it differently, but its still a beautiful song
I don't know if y'all have seen but atlas made a cover of this song and it's fabulous * big fan of this version too i can't choose between which I like better
Billy Ford if you haven't listened to Right Away Great Captain I would recommend them. Its a side project for one of the vocalists in this band. Love Come Save Me, Night Marry You, Because I'm So Scared of Dying, are just a couple of my favorite tracks.
There actually three perpectives, One is Pyotr's, Second his wife and third the severed head of the lover which is locked on a glass containor. It's incredible the visuals this song can provoque even though is just a guitar and two voices.
I'm not sure how the band meant for it to be pronounced, but Pyotr is like a Russian version of Peter. Пётр is how it's spelled in the Cyrillic alphabet, but the e makes a "yo" sound in this case. So it would be Pyo-ter.
Sorry I know the comment is old but I have to disagree - I think the villain is clear. But I think beauty of the song is that you find a way to empathize with him anyway.

Simply, the most beautiful thing I have ever heard.
I wish there were more songs with this exact sound. no extra beats just...this.
Really need more songs like this. The guitar and vocals is enough. This and "Back Of Your Old Church" are insane.

+nickbagelboy If you like kinda morbid, really emotional songs like this, check out Jason Isbell - Elephant.
No, it's literally about a head in a jar. This song is about Peter the great, who killed his wife Catherines lover and put his head in a jar.
youi feel it so much because you know after that point the song is about love lost, that he is really gone.

هذه الاغنية من المفضلات لدي، القصة، العواقب، الحوار، اللحن، النبرة... مرت سنين واشوفني ازور هنا
I am still here, too. Cheers, mate ❤️
Really a beautiful song considering its about King Pyotr beheading his wifes lover and putting the head on display
Thanks for this comment! I never realized it had this meaning
Sounds good
Czar* The story is Russian.
@@Christian-nj8nw thank you for existing in this world
He would also make her spend time with the head. It's really quite fucked up.
11 years later and this shit hits me to the fucking core, still. I'm so tired of this depression.
falling in love with this song over and over again
This song gives me chills every time I listen to it. So haunting and beautiful.

Strange song to pick.
Hull does a crazy job creating a pathos for both perspectives, instead of making one out as the villain.
My thoughts exactly. I feel for Pyotr too.
Such a beautiful song... I can listen to this over and over and over.
I got to see them on the tour for this album with the front bottoms and weatherbox. Top 5 best shows I’ve ever seen.
To see one still here
As a history nerd, I love this song.
Same
this song is hauntingly beautiful
I had to put a cat down today and this was his going away song. I cried for so long as Chong passed. I hope he rests in peace
If you like this version you'd love the cover that atlas did it's gorgeous
this is my favourite song of all times, and even tho i sometimes forget about it whenever i hear it it just takes me away someplace distant.
Definitely one of my favorite songs .
this song always takes me away. love it
This song is so awesome, it's constantly on repeat on my playlist :D
how does anyone dislike this beautiful song ?
I love this song for ever!

He does and its awesome
I adore this song
That voice.. I believe every word.
Just hope this guy dosent die...cuz I need him to keep making music.

An og song.
geez that's so beautiful. I lost myself for 3 and a half minutes
I heard this on tumblr and immediately had to search this. Best decision ever made 3
Another one of those bands I found on a whim that ended up being really deep aha that’s an on going theme with my music
@uglyfromwithin Thank you for noticing Conor in hid songs. I thought was the other one!
I enjoy this. Like a lot.
all I can say is wow this song hits a nerve when I'm drunk and I listen to it, great/sad song !!!! :(...
People just need to accept what they like and don't like and let others do the same
Awesome
Atlas made a cover of this
And it's absolutely brilliant
thats why im here (wayyyyy after watching the cover though)
I've never loved nobody other than you...
them, dallas green and daniel romano singing in unison.......that would be so dope
ich mag diese band! :D
I'm mostly into old school classic rock and country but this sort of modern music isn't bad
Crazy where words can take you
Someone needs to make a movie about this song...
I don't know if y'all have seen but atlas made a cover of this song and it's fabulous * big fan of this version too i can't choose between which I like better
Does anyone have other bands or specific songs that bring as much emotion to our souls as this one?
Billy Ford if you haven't listened to Right Away Great Captain I would recommend them. Its a side project for one of the vocalists in this band. Love Come Save Me, Night Marry You, Because I'm So Scared of Dying, are just a couple of my favorite tracks.
Spill Canvas gets me the most. You might not like them though. Listen to the one fell swoop album.
David Bazan. “In stitches” “lost my shape” but any song is good.
There actually three perpectives, One is Pyotr's, Second his wife and third the severed head of the lover which is locked on a glass containor. It's incredible the visuals this song can provoque even though is just a guitar and two voices.
its actually only 2, pyotr and the head. he says so before they play it during the livestream session.
Its the other video that has made the typo, this one is the correct spelling
did you make a typo in the title? LOL
I thought it was pytor not pyotr
Another side of Andy? How many band and projects he has?
The girls that get it, get it
Cheers Gazzers x
This hurts
moves me
Haha he sure does. One is the lead singer for Manchester Orchestra
how does one pronounce pyotr
Pee-ter
that seems too easy...
I see what you mean. That feeling of betrayal, especially knowing she'll probably never love him again.
To everyone else who likes this kind of music: are you ok?
If this song doesn't lower you're blood pressure, put the Red Bull down.
Why is Catherine’s hand blistered?
Yeah. Why is it blistered?
I really hope this guy has a beard.
Ugh, i just can't
this some Game of Thrones type of shit fr. I feel like I'm there. It's actually kind of scary.
DanieBritsRainCloud game of thrones is at its heart a tale of unrequited love
Weirdly i feel a bit sorry for Pyotr in this song
i want to make sweet sweet love to this song. like even if this song was a dude i would be so gay so fast.
Who else came here from that one flipnote
