Although I'm not really a fan of Mrs Thatcher, I think in this interview it's definitely clear that she took the superior position... quite in contrast to that fatuous bint of a journalist, who made a total fool out of herself.
Loved Margaret Thatcher she was so full of wisdom and intelligence. Loved the quick repartee...'I make great leaps forward not little jumps in studios'.
In the 1930 the interviewer would asked her to to "a little straight arm salute" because everybody does it. I bet Ms Thatchers reply would have been the same.
The left are always so convinced that Tories want to destroy the NHS, yet it's still here despite the Conservative party being in power for 45 of the past 72 years since 1948! How strange it is that British people seem to view their healthcare system as something so cherished, when it really is mediocre. I can vouch for this, as I work for them.
Absolutely amazing woman. The best peace time prime minister the country ever had. She would make a mockery of today's politicians. Knocked the nail rite on the head..."i tell you what is shows, it shows you want to be seen as popular."
feel a bit sorry for the interviewer doing her best effort to justify what otherwise is no doubt a silly and rude demand in a interview, specially to someone as hard to talk to as M Thatcher. and yes, Heil Harry Enfield! (and Graham Norton)
No matter what one thinks of Thatcher (I am 70% pro), one has to say this is a politician with dignity. Today's Western European politicians have no dignity and are not even worth a pebble on the ground.
I've heard a lot of bad things about Thatcher, and I admit, my knowledge of English politics is practically non-existent. However, I do have to respect her for not jumping through hoops in a vain hope to gain popularity. It was a cool move, and exactly the kind of move I wish every politician would make. Did you see the video of Mitt Romney meeting black people and trying to be cool by dropping a, "so who let the dogs out" reference? Fucking awful.
I hated her policies but I do admire her here. She had integrity whatever else you thought about her and I think that's worth a lot. It saddens me that people hold on to the anger she undoubtedly generated while in office. It is many years later now and she died a sick old lady. Ageing and death are the great levellers that should give us all pause for human compassion. Abusive name calling is irrelevant now and demeans us all.
Her refusal to ingratiate herself with the interviewer (and viewing audience) is admirable. She had the guts, character, and backbone to resist the gimmick, the inducement to be 'cool,' that lesser men and women would have capitulated to. Indeed, most bend over themselves to appeal to the crassest lowest denominator. She didn't. And that's why we love her.
Stuck up?! Why should a world stateswoman in her mid 70s (at time of this video) jump in the air?! Nothing to do with being 'stuck up', she is a lady of dignity and such banal requests are pointless. She is interviewing one of the leading figures of the 20th century, and all this interviewer can do is ask her to 'jump'. Quality journalism!
That was a really great answer as to why she refused to jump. The interviewer should have left it there - as if Thatcher, of all people, would decide to jump a few seconds later after a little exposition.
Don't mess with Lady Thatcher! How foolish to ask someone of her generation, and personality, to do something so tasteless. What does it prove? Nothing. Thatcher dealt with it well I thought
Contrary to common belief, Mrs T did have a sense of humour, it was just not a frivolous one, but a very accute one in the service of her beliefs. Her comment about what would the Soviets think of freedom if it was represented by randomly jumping in the air is actually quite sharp and funny, as is her observation that Socialism leads to running out of other people's money.
Terry Krause; Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister, not the head of state. That is the Queen. An understandable mix-up and one that Thatcher seemed to suffer from as well.
