UPDATE: Reading #2102 has since returned to operation, completing her initial test runs in April, and heading up her first excursion in over 30 years on May 28th, 2022, with several more trips scheduled throughout the year.
The Reading locomotive that was used for the American Freedom Train I have a bond with. My Grandfather, Oliver W Buswell was the most senior Steam Qualified Engineer on the B&M and was honored by Ross Roland to be Engineer from White River Junction VT to Manchester NH of this famed train back in April of 1975 (or 1976). I rode in the Cab with my grandfather the entire distance as a 9 or 10 yr old boy. He knew this road very well and advised Mr. Roland a stop was recommended in Franklin NH to take on water, but, Roland said "keep going Oliver" and when in Manchester NH the Fireman in the tinder did not get his boots wet -- it was almost completely dry and the only water left was in the boiler! I also got a big cinder in my eye that day making it a most miserable day! Thanks for sharing this nice video!
Out of the four main Reading T-1's, 2102 seemed to have the longest running career, still being restored today, seeing that thing run again is on my bucket list. Nice video, man!
That was fabulous! I really enjoyed A Look Back at Reading Excursion Engines video! Even though yo forgot 1251 but I still enjoyed the video! You should also make A Look Back at Pennsylvania Railroad Excursion Engines also!
Nice video on the history of the Reading, excursion steam locomotives. Thanks for sharing! I took a ride on one of the "Chessie Steam Specials" behind 2101 back in the summer of 1977. The round trip was from the B&O's Barr Yard at Riverdale, IL to Garrett, IN and back. The day for the excursion was picture perfect with warm, sunny weather. 2101 showed off her stuff in the Calumet region ("da region" as some of the locals say) in northwest, Indiana when the big 4-8-4 got up around 60 mph pulling around 15 vintage, passenger cars.
Yes I bet the most people want a look back at Union Pacific excursion engines then Lake suppierior and Ishpeming then Pennsylvania Railroad excursion engines
Be great to see a video in the future on look back at N&W excursion engines or Lake Superior & ishpeming excursion stars. Either one will be great to see in the future
I thought this was a great video, however there was a locomotive you missed. Reading 0-6-0T 1251. Built in 1915 by the Reading Company, this little switcher was retained by the railroad after dieselization and was still being used up until 1963. It was then purchased by George Hart, Owner of Rail Tours Inc and briefly ran excursions on the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad before being retired again in 1966. Today she's on display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.
Regarding a comment I just saw about the Norfolk and Western do you think you may be able to do something later on regarding O Winston Links photographs and their locations as they appear now compared to when he took the pictures, along with something relating to the lost engines of roanoke ?
I think a cool spinoff of this would be a look back at notable railroad museums. Examples could be IRM, Steam Town, Green Bay, etc. where you talk about their history as well as notable pieces of equipment they have. Great work on these videos as well!
It might be interesting to take a look back at the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy's Excursion Engines, there's a lot of ups and downs there. Edit: Also, the Cheesie Steam Special ran in 1977 and again in 1978, and the roundhouse fire occurred in March of 1979 before a third season of the special could be planned.
Very nice video! Got to see 2124 at Steamtown in her “Rambles” scheme in 2020, and saw 2101 at the B&O Railroad Museum back in 2018. Nice to know their histories. I would suggest doing a look back at excursion locos from the Great Western Railway of Colorado.
I can't believe the Reqding company ended the iron horse rambles, just like NS ended their steam prohram. How are the remaining Reading engines today? Are they still in good condition?
It's my understanding that deteriorating track conditions as well as maintenance and repairs needed on the T1s ended Reading's Rambles. Railroads in the NE weren't doing well in the 60s ultimately leading to Conrail. I believe the Great Swamp derailment on NS lead to retirement of their steam program.
As an update on this: 2102 is set to haul four Iron Horse Rambles excursions between Reading and Jim Thorpe: home rails from Reading as far as Haucks. These will include a photo runby for passengers and take place on Memorial Day Weekend, 4th of July Weekend, Labor Day Weekend and a weekend in August. Following this, the 2102 will pull two weekends of fall specials between Reading and Jim Thorpe, this time with no runby. With the new passenger equipment purchased from Iowa Pacific, trains are pushing 20 coaches, so it should be quite a show with the 2102 hauling the long train. Prior to all of this, the 2102 is supposed to be tested and broken in on Reading & Northern freight trains.
By now I'm sure everyone knows what a spectacular season 2102 had in the spring/summer/fall of 2022 hauling freight and excursions. The restoration is beautiful.
Very comprehensive look at the Reading fleet. Amazing that four of this class remain today and three could be steamed, given enough money to do the restoration work. 2124 needs heavy repair these days. 2101 should be repatriated and returned to the Reading colors, rather than that ridiculous clown suit she weathers in. I'd like to see pictures of 2123, prior to scrapping. My guess is she wasn't in terrible shape when she was condemned.
2102 was owned by Rails Diversified Incorporated of Stowe Ohio, after Allegheny Railroad owned it. That was in the mid 70's and repairs were made at Monongahela Railroad in Brownsville Pa. I know because I was part of the RDI group. After the recreated Rambles in mid 80's, RDI sold 2102 to Andy at RBM. Never heard Reading Historical Society ever owning it.
There is also another thing that’s incorrect for the wedding look about it especially 1187, it’s moved to the age of Steam Roundhouse in February 2021 so, it was still there in 2020 and January of 2021 just so you know.
Could you maybe just enjoy the lad’s video instead of pointing out everything he got wrong? Yes it’s helping him for future reference but it’s almost nitpicking.
@@Voucher765 3001 was the subject of not 1, but 2 failed restoration attempts. The condition of her boiler scared off both the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society and Railroading Heritage of Midwest America.
You totally missed 0-6-0T #1251. It was owned by George Hart and Rail Tours Inc. for a number of years and ran on the former Ma & Pa until being retired a second time and changing hands.
Great video. I took one of the photos of RDG 2102 as D&H 302 that you featured in your presentation. Would be awesome if in the future you were to credit the photographers who tracked this wonderful locomotive. Not seeking money here -- just a little credit. Thanks much!

Some of your info in your video was not entirely accurate. The 1251 was over looked along with several locomotives the Reading Company used before the T1 Rambles.
