Hi Everyone! I am seeing a lot of comments asking for recommendations for the best single eyeshadows or palettes for brown or hazel eyes. I think it will be best if I just film a video on this, rather than answer each of you individually. This way I can be a lot more thorough and it will be more helpful to you. Stay tuned!!

melissa pintone That is an excellent question! I have wondered the same over the years. I'm 55 and wear makeup most of the time- you'd think I have this figured out by now 😉. I'm a deep winter, so I wear jewel tones, but my eyes are green w/some hazel. If I wear too many cool tone shadows, it doesn't look quite right. I'm so glad Risa's going to do a video or two on this!

With you Risa it's never a problem to make a 30 minute video. I've mentioned this to you before that you seem the most grounded on your station than the many, many others that are out there. Never think twice about making long videos. I also love the few fashion videos you've done. It just mixes thing up. Keep doing what you're doing a great job at.

I'm so pleased to see someone mention Buxom eyeshadows in a video. I was looking for good quality, neutral every day palette that didn't have 18 or 24 shades in it. I picked up one by Buxom & really liked it ( I think it's called May Contain Nudity) but found I still needed a few more matte shades. So, I made a 2nd 6 pan custom palette that contained that matte black & matte off white that so many palettes don't include, plus 4 more I thought I would use regularly. I always love my eyeshadow look when i use these palettes. And the actual palettes themselves are sturdy & attractive in a snakeskin finish. When I have to get ready quickly or pack for a trip, these are what I use. Buxom is kind of overlooked on UA-cam for eyeshadow.
I think my biggest "complaint " with eyeshadow palettes right now besides them releasing too many too fast, is that the average palette will offer variety but not contrast. So the consumer gets sucked in by all the shades but then you realize the palette lacks light shades or true deeper tones & you can't get a complete look even though the palette has 24 or more pans in it. So, I definitely look for a range of shades & contrast & try for no more than 9 pan palettes anymore. Big huge palettes don't travel well & they're a pain to store(for me) If I want a new color, I buy a single now & not an entire palette.

Thanks for a great reminder not to get caught up in the hype. I am definitely guilty of getting sucked in watching all the new releases featured on UA-cam, coveting the latest and greatest (not to mention pressures from my 17 year old😂). I need to focus on needs vs wants.

Many good points. I was on a binge for almost a year and it has slowed significantly because I don't want to duplicate what I have. An additional recommendation I would suggest - 'shop your stash'. That inspiring UA-cam series by a few ladies has helped me stop myself from several temptations. Thanks for this video.

Risa this video is AWESOME!!! This is *exactly* that kind of advice I come to UA-cam for. Would love a follow up video with a breakdown of your recommendations for warm, neutral, and cool palettes in high, medium, and low price points.

Great video!! I was caught up in the UA-cam hype and binged on high end and drugstore palettes. I finally decluttered (happy dance for my daughter-in-law), and now feel more comfortable with my very limited collection. Makeup should bring us joy, not guilt and worry about expiration dates.

It seems like trios and quads are completely overlooked these days. They're good for figuring out how to put looks together, which can be difficult with palettes with too many or too similar options. Almay has some trios that are made to bring out your eye color, if people need a reference.

Such an awesome video! I end up with so many pallets and don’t use half of them because I feel them to be overwhelming. You gave great tips on what to look for! Recently discovered your channel and I am loving it. I am a 54-year-old make up junkie who is really trying to simplify my vanity. Have recently found the Anastasia singles and love their blendability, but I have such a hard time putting a pallet together for myself. I would love to see a video of recommendations on how to put a pallet together.

What I love about you Risa...you are so practical and understand ALL your fans. Though I am more a makeup junkie I was looking for a video just like this bc I struggle with how best to use the palettes I own. Plus, I do want value for my dollar. I've purchased palettes when I was building up my collection that I now look at and wonder, "what was I thinking?" So this video is invaluable to me. I too love the tarte palettes but don't have the one you showed. How did that happen? Lol I own a lot of singles but struggle to put them together so palettes and watching channels like yours are so helpful to me. Lately, I've been loving cream, stick and liquid eyeshadows. They work beautifully on my older eyes but it does take a bit of practice. But once mastered, so beautiful. I hope you do a video on cream/stick/liquids soon and if you already have apologies for missing it. I hope you never stop making not only your fab makeup tutorials but also these instructional videos. They are both so helpful and needed. Love you Risa!

Awesome video Risa. You know there is also another factor that people should consider when buying an eye shadow palette and it is "shelf life". Some palettes are only good for 6 months and others for 12 months of more. I bought a palette and forgot to check that and all of the sudden stop performing the way it used to at the beginning and it was because it was like 1 year past it shelf life.

    • @RisaDoesMakeup

That’s interesting...I have palettes that are 7/8 years old(like my Urban Decay Naked palette) and they still perform the way they did when new. Powders don’t typically go bad, but yeah, if for some reason the texture changes or they have a bad smell, it’s time to pitch them!

It is maddening to hit pan on the one shade you absolutely need in a palette. I hit pan pretty quickly on the transition shade in my Huda Beauty Mauve Obsessions. I have reconciled myself to having to supply my own transition shade. Fortunately inexpensive brands like Nyx have a good selection of medium tones that work with the Huda Beauty and my current favorite, Viseart Tryst. Great video, as always.

  • @100TAlison
    @100TAlison 6 років тому +16

I don’t pick...I just get them all! A big influence is if it’s a BOMB brand like Juvia’s Place or Coloured Raine. Then you know there’ll be pigment. And any palette which says ‘neutrals” or “naked” in it, I avoid! I’m over 40 and will NOT blend into the wallpaper by wearing beiges. I promote women wearing colours over the age of 40. We still have the right to shimmer and stand out.
And cost out *does* matter. People think Viseart is expensive but gram for gram, they’re a lot cheaper than Urban Decay.

Hi Risa, this was the most thorough, comprehensive video, thank you! I am ALWAYS conflicted when considering a palette, especially if it is higher end, therefore, i have YET to purchase a hihigher end one. I am definitely in the single shadow preference type, it so far works best for my budget. I have created my own palette of singles with Makeup Geek and Coastalscents. I am definitely in the cool tone category, I have dark brown eyes, with very pale skin and pink undertones in my skin, so I find cool tones are most flattering. I can do some warm, but they need to be gold undertoned browns, true golds, olivey greens. Any oranges, or reds, like most of the tones in Modern Renaisance, DON'T work for me. I can do a burgundy on outer corner and I don't like black at all. I can do cool pinks and purples as well. Sooo, I have stayed away from palettes, EXCEPT for some drugstore ones, like Wet and Wild Comfort Zone and some smaller trios. The newest Wet and Wild ones that have matte shadows added are mostly very good. I don't mind not using all the colors since they are so cheap, but very good. Colour Pop singles and palettes I hear are also very good at more of a budget price point. Lastly, I see a lot of great reviews on the Milani Palettes, some of them look like Tarte in their packaging. Thank you again for such a fantastic video!

Thank you Risa for all your tips you gave,I am obsessed with eyeshadowpallets but I am on a very low budget,a few years ago I look only to the price and how many eyeshadows there where in the pallets,I buyed many pallets which I never use because of the quality.AYear ago i got from my husband a pallet,a choclatbarpallet, and the world opend to me,the colours the smell, the blendability,it stays all day long, now I am a year further and I collected all different choclatbarpallets all as a gift for my birthday, christmas, valentinesday etc,and I use those pallets every single day, sometimes when I want a brighter collour I pick one off my older pallets, but than I only use one brighter colour and the rest Will be from my choclatbarpallets,I can’t do a day without. The choclatbarpallets are Some more expensive as the other pallets I always bought, but the quality is for me so great and it takes so long before I use up a colour or a pallet. When the quality is better than you need much less product and I have not used up a single colour,so I am curious how long it Will take to use up a whole pallet, and the very cheap pallets I use up quickly because the shadows are so powdery, and much fall out,and they are often not pressed very well in the package so the colours Will brake a lot or the pallet is faling a part, sometimes you can buy a cheap pallet with a good quality, but more often has a very cheap pallet a horrible quality.I rather spend a little more on a choclat bar pallet, but i Will never buy a very expencive pallet, becouse of my low budget. But you gave Some great tips, thank you very much Risa❤️

Thank you, very informative and practical. 😀
I’m 50 with very hooded eyes, so many of the palettes out there have too many shimmers in them to be useful to me. I also have a small budget. Finding a good drugstore matte palette is tough here in Australia, we simply don’t have the brand range that the US does. The info on texture I think will really help me, cheers! 👍

Hi Janet! I LOVE jewel tones on dark brown eyes and tan skin. Deep greens, purples, I also love shimmery golds on darker eyes and skin, especially in the summer. So pretty.

Great video, Risa! You always give such sensible advice. I also love Buxom shadows and a couple other favorites of mine that you don’t hear much about is Inglot and Lorac. They are both great quality in my opinion.

Really loved this video....just recently started watching you tube beauty influencers, and I got hooked very quickly into going out and buying every drugstore brand that was recommended. Now I know that investing in one good high end product, might have saved me some money in the long run. This was a great video....truly.

I have blue eyes with cool/red skin tone thanks to Rosacea. Not only my face is red but my décolletage is red too so if I put on full coverage foundation to cover my redness my chest is still red. The warm bronze tones do flatter my eyes but doesn’t blend well with my ruddy skin. It’s very frustrating to find a neutral palette with some pops of color that flatter my eyes that doesn’t compete with my skin tone.

Huda Beauty Desert Dusk palette is one of those palettes that is so tempting to buy because it is truly beautiful but I know I will not use it a lot ... so far, i resisted a purchase : )

I'm a pallet junkie but I do look at it for a bit to see if I will use the majority of the colors. I did pass on the peach pallet for that reason.

Claudia S. ..My eyes are hazel green. I love wearing colors that bring out the green.. Plums and purple tones have a special place in my heart, but more recently discovered how beautiful the reds and warm browns. Pick up a naked heat! I love mine!
