Hey, here in Germany the supermarkets do facing as well (we call it "spiegeln"). Not all the time though, just a little bit each day. And of course not in discounters like Aldi or Lidl 😀
In San Diego, CA, there are recycling bins for bottles and cans at a supermarket nearby. You put them in the appropriate bins and receive tickets relative to what you put in which you can use to pay for groceries in the store.
I love watching you and your mom at the grocery store. It reminds me so much of visiting my Canadian daughter and her family in Germany. The grocery and market shopping is so much fun! I learn more every time I’m there!
Moin.

I have collapsable boxes in the trunk of my car for shopping. So i drive my cart to the car on the parking lot and place the shopping items in the boxes. At home i just have to empty the boxes and fold up them after usage. The boxes are of stabile plastic, and can take a lot of weight.
Some people can write a novel about the family stress of getting a suitable daycare or kindergarten place. And depending on the federal state, the systems are now incredibly complicated. About thirty years ago we were lucky that one of our neighbors ran the "integrative neighborhood kindergarten" and told us when our first child was born that he had already been registered. Three years before reaching kindergarten age :)
In the USA, many people do bring re-usable bags to the grocery store. My favorite are a Chinese brand called Dalix, canvas ones that I buy on eBay. The stores themselves sell re-usable bags also.
Aldi is very slick now, compared to when I was young- it used to be really rough, ripped open cardboard boxes everywhere, and a very limited selection of basic groceries. I actually felt this much less stressful (and economical)-I just hate having to decide between 20 types of joghurt and buying several, because the variety is tempting 😅
Oh yes, I remember. In the past, coffee, milk, flour, sugar, etc. were simply left along with the pallets and the carton. (Today this probably only applies to beverage bottles) The box with the children's jeans etc. was also left on the pallets. No extra rows of shelves or metal baskets

Aldi and Lidl are definitely leading the shopping world. Wal Mart had at one time 83 stores in Germany or for 1 Million people one store. When their losses accumulated 500 Million, they closed them all at once. . If you want to show your mom, what a decent recycling system can do, take her to the stairs on Burgplatz in the summer. People hang out there, drinking beer from bottles and enjoy the sunset. Lots of people with lots of beer. Meanwhile, some homeless/no-income people will ask you to give them the empty bottles, so they can return them for the cash. I think, it is a great "system" - the bottles get returned and do not litter the place and the people returning them are making some money on it for themselves.

Poor Customer Service is one of the worst aspects of living in Germany (not from everybody). I was once accused of shoplifting in a German Store. I was so angry, the shopkeeper, who had accused me, and the security guard were just laughing at me, they kept asking me why I hadn't kept my receipt, although it's common practice in German stores not to keep your receipts. I wrote two emails, one to head office, one to the store itself, plus a letter of complaint to the store. I never received a reply. I still feel angry thinking about it.

It'll be a real shame not to see her anymore - especially if she continues to do little dances like that one in front of the bottle return machine.
