Apparently the band members met Heath Ledger through mutual friends in his hometown of Perth when they were touring Australia .. the story as told by Brock (probably, I can't remember where I read the interview) goes that they got to talking on a boat cruise about this song and concept which Heath then volunteered to make the video for, then many months later when they presumed the famous young movie star had completely forgotten about or ignored the project they received the full synopsis from him in the mail out of the blue. This is one reason why they made it exactly as he had envisioned it in his honour after his tragic and untimely death. Heath was a great, great actor (everyone knows that) but he was also a great creative artist and budding director with the world at his feet. He made his own video for Black Eyed Dog by Nick Drake but that has never been released publicly, and I've been looking for about 10 years now, and wanted to bring a biopic to the screen starring himself as Nick of course. Apart from everything he had going on including a new wife and young child, he was a man of his word as proven by this tale. We'll never know what else he might have achieved but the world is definitely the poorer without him :/ Rest in peace Heath, you made your mark.

Heath Ledger: I have this half-finished animation about how whaling is bad. Do you have any songs that would fit? Isaac Brock: We got this one about a criminal constantly returning to his life of crime. It mentions fish and water metaphorically a couple of times. Heath Ledger: Perfect.
I'm in love with this song for the pure sinisterness in Isaac's singing - as in he doesn't even need lyrics to sound like a psycho, his voice does it all! And I desperately wish there are more singers like him.
The animated video which was "fully conceived down to the last detail but unfinished" when Ledger died in January 2008, it was completed by members of Los Angeles art collective/production company The Masses, namely Daniel Auber (co-director and illustrator), Norris Houk (lead animator), Jade Taglioli (animator) and Sara Cline (producer). Ledger who had also been part of The Masses, received a director's credit.

I discovered them when I was 11 and I'm 14 now but I know I will definitely be listening when I'm adult. it's rare when music can impact me no matter my age, especially in different ways each time.
yeah, because, "Whale, what do you have to say for yourself?" makes more sense than, "Well, what you you have to say for yourself?" The song actually has nothing to do about whales, or whaling (at least not directly). The video is just a story that's being used to demonstrate the same thing the song is saying, a similar idea that King Rat (the book) is putting forth. Also, look at the lyrics.
Come on VEVO know your shit. This was directed by Heath Ledger for Christ's sake. You know the awesome joker who died what seems not that long ago (RIP :( Your fans miss you).
man modest mouse is amazing. their isn't a word that cant describe their brilliance and epic-ness their lyrics aren't empty meanings to make money. they have meaning and its just. gonna see em live soon. Are they good live?
I discovered them from a great friend when I was 17, I don't speak to him anymore but I'm 28 now and have listened to them for 11 years. They generate the lovely memories of our time together ❤🤼♂️
This song can sneak up on your if your not paying attention to what's playing. It starts without you even noticing and then by the second bridge your screaming along with the lyrics and the neighbors are banging on your door without you even realizing what your doing
I feel like this was directed after Heath Ledger locked himself in a hotel room for a month. If this was before that, I'm afraid to see what's in his journal.
Aristiocratic Lobes That is not logic, that is biased assumptions in which you are wrong on both ends! Emojis are perfectly acceptable for use in textual communication. IF you do NOT like seeing emojis, then stick to old-fashioned means of communication... Like phone calls. Otherwise, DEAL WITH IT as you do NOT get to decide what people choose to use to communicate in an online forum.
This ended with "What do you have to say for yourself?" I mean, come on, the meaning here is so obvious. I keep hearing people joke about it but I'm worried it's actually blown over most people's heads.
The song and video have two separate meanings. The song is about crooks committing a breaking and entering and getting caught, and thrown in jail. The video is more obvious and in your face with the message.
Now this is truly an example of a music video that nailed the accompanying ideas of its lyrics. It's disturbing - exactly as it should be, giving real consideration to the lyrics. I think MM would benefit from a more "epic" take on some of their music videos. In a similar, but extremely different, way that The Decemberists always load their songs with fantastic social commentary and symbolism, MM's music videos should have no hesitation in being splayed and expressive. I think Dashboard is a good example of an MM music video also done right. Folks will mock the folksy and silly qualities of it, but it provided a narrative that seems so appropriate for MM's music. RIP Jeremiah Green.
I'm late as fuck to the party. What did I just listen to? This is the "Float On" band from high school? For real though, I had no idea Modest Mouse was this original. I love it. Any album/song suggestions for a new Modest Mouse fan? RIP Jeremiah.
If you like this you'd probably like Whale Song, Cowboy Dan, and most songs off of The Lonesome Crowded West, another good album is Good News For People Who Love Bad News, that's the album Float On is featured in, although the rest of the songs are very very different from Float On.
I saw this on TV, late at night, many years ago. Needless to say it kinda disturbed my for a long time. It wast until a few years ago that I saw the band perform live.

what
+Synthmalicious The lyrics
"I don't care"
Why don't you care?
The lyrics and visuals tell two very different stories but merge at the end.
[Intro]
(Ha, ha, ha, ha, I love this shit)
Well, well, well, well
[Verse 1]
We spun like birds on fire
Right down towards the residence
And I, I took all that I desired
Even crooks have to pay the rent
We swam like rats on fire
Right, right down the reservoir
We took all that we could carry
But we tried to carry more
[Chorus]
And you know, you know, you know it all went wrong
And you know, you know, you know it was all wrong
[Verse 2]
We choked on street tap water
Well, I'm going to have to try the real thing
I took your laugh by the collar
And it knew not to swing
Any time I tried an honest job
Well, the till had a hole in it
We laughed about paying rent
Cause the county jails they're free
[Chorus]
And you know, you know, you know it all went wrong
And you know, you know, you know it was all wrong
[Verse 3]
Deep water, deep water, senseless denial
I went down like a rag doll as you would, child
Well, deep water, deep water, senseless denial
I went down like a rag doll as you would, child
Oh, lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky me again
I said it looks it's time to use my feet again
Well, I just spent my last one hundred dollars
God, I'll pay my bill again
Oh, I don't care
Oh, I just don't care
Deep water, deep water, senseless denial
I went down like a rag doll shaken and shy
Deep water, deep water, senseless denial
I went down like a burned out rag of a child
Well, King Rat has me on his list again
I can never be on the fence again
I found out it's all loud open like an organ and it
Talk, talk, talk, talk again
He promised me that when I cheated him
But I could open my eye, well
Lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky
Lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky me again
Deep water, deep water, senseless denial
I got fed like a fish full of open smiles
Blue water, deep water, senseless denial
I got fed like a fish on the cardboard smiles
Well, well
What do you have to say for yourself?
I said well, well, well
I said well, well, well, well, well
Lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky me again
I hardly knew I should use my feet again
What do you have to say for yourself?
What do you have to say for yourself?
Thank you!

yeah, because, "Whale, what do you have to say for yourself?" makes more sense than, "Well, what you you have to say for yourself?"
The song actually has nothing to do about whales, or whaling (at least not directly). The video is just a story that's being used to demonstrate the same thing the song is saying, a similar idea that King Rat (the book) is putting forth.
Also, look at the lyrics.
The official lyrics say "Well"
Dustin Snodgress it's a joke...
Come on VEVO know your shit. This was directed by Heath Ledger for Christ's sake. You know the awesome joker who died what seems not that long ago (RIP :( Your fans miss you).
He gave physical scars in the Dark Knight, He gave mental scars in this music video, Ladies and Gentleman HEATH LEDGER!!!
The trumpets are the best part musically by far aaaahhhh!!!!😮
Oh my gosh yes, it's great to see some love for the trumpets on this one- they tie the whole song together!
why did I just find out that Heath Ledger directed this
Because you just happened to come across that information..?
That's awesome!
i saw this like 5 years ago and just realised this also
4hotpink10 IKR
Yep, that explains it now.
Directed By: Heath Ledger
... Ooooh....
Why did he have to die? Why not Ben Affleck or Will Smith?
Those human cookies look good tho.
theyre human fish sticks
@@foreverpainful they still looks good as hell
My heart is warm to see youngins in the comments appreciating the glory of Modest Mouse
Is this the new episode of spongebob?
+Olivia Perez this made my day
oh my god
+Olivia Perez Yes.

*thunderous applause*
man modest mouse is amazing. their isn't a word that cant describe their brilliance and epic-ness their lyrics aren't empty meanings to make money. they have meaning and its just. gonna see em live soon.
Are they good live?
yes they are bettter live
Great video by Heath Ledger and great song too
I discovered them from a great friend when I was 17, I don't speak to him anymore but I'm 28 now and have listened to them for 11 years. They generate the lovely memories of our time together ❤🤼♂️
I didn't know this was directed by Heath Ledger..
Doctor: "You have six minutes and four seconds left to live"
Kream Kong yep
This song can sneak up on your if your not paying attention to what's playing. It starts without you even noticing and then by the second bridge your screaming along with the lyrics and the neighbors are banging on your door without you even realizing what your doing
The Sun is like Shrek
+Arpi Alemán Like the Grinch xD
+Arpi Alemán look just like Sherk
like Benedict the Sherlock
Reminded me of Trump, actually...
it looks like michael bay's tmnt, tbh
IT'S GREAT! HIS VOICE!... oh god... i love it
This song was ok to me the first time i listened to it.. It's now one of my favourite songs ever. The lyrics are so deep, and the video is so cool
When I heard about the Titan, submarine imploding, this song popped into my head specially the deep water part
I feel like this was directed after Heath Ledger locked himself in a hotel room for a month. If this was before that, I'm afraid to see what's in his journal.
My daughter saw this on her recommended and thought it was just a nice cartoon. Boy, was she taken for a surprise.
Not sure why after 13 years did UA-cam decide to recommend this to me now but I am not complaining
It’s a good song, no matter how old!
i love the suns facial expressions. HEATH LEDGER RULES AND SO DOES MODEST MOUSE! Happy tears lol
I THINK the whales have JUST gotten their revenge! 0.0
Only thing missing is a bunch of whales campaigning to 'Save the humans'... XD
Aristiocratic Lobes Excuse me? Was there ANYTHING in my comment that warranted that insult? Go troll someone else... 'Cause you'll get flagged here.
Aristiocratic Lobes No... Just don't find random insults funny.
+Christopher Althouse Damn. People will argue over anything online. emojis? wtf?
Diablo Cruz IKR! I mean, this guy ACTUALLY tried to criticize me for that... :P
To that I say:
#getalife
Lol XD
Heath Ledger had a great mind. when he made this he knew exactly what he was doing. RIP Heath
This ended with "What do you have to say for yourself?"
I mean, come on, the meaning here is so obvious. I keep hearing people joke about it but I'm worried it's actually blown over most people's heads.
Most people aren't ready to accept the message in this video. That's why they choose to ignore it and focus on other things.
The song and video have two separate meanings. The song is about crooks committing a breaking and entering and getting caught, and thrown in jail. The video is more obvious and in your face with the message.
Song came to my head randomly for first time in a decade and im glad it did ❤
This is truly a piece of art
This video gave me nightmares as a kid 😭😭
I remember seeing this when I was 17 and feeling sick for a week. Still love this song though.
Rest in peace Heath Ledger.
I only understand like 5 or 6 words of this shit but it sounds nice💀💀
this song terrifies me and amazes me at the same time it's messing with my brain
I love the message of this! Thanks! x
sounds like a Disney villain song
Animelover161001 no fucking

Rest in peace Heath Ledger. 2019
Boy, that escalated quickly.
Heath was such an undeniable genius. Much love 💕
The fish is fucking yelling!! XD

Candice L LOL
What? How?
I can't believe this video is already 10 years old :(
All 2010 songs come at me! YT been hiding all these good songs from me.
Absolutely love this song!
i love how humans only realize what they are doing to other beings when the roles are visually switched. really cool video :)
RIP Heath. You will be missed.
And here i thought they were gonna be fishing for those flying fish at the beginning. I sure was wrong...
Everybody is talking about the video, but won't we praise THOSE SUPERB VOCALS?
Can’t say we don’t deserve this
It's kill or be killed, look what they are doing to us in a parallel universe
this is a different universe from our’s. in this world, humans are whales, and whales are humans. so these people didn’t deserve it
Smell that air, can’t you just drink it like booze?
Nobody:
Whales: Reverse UNO card
I'm late as fuck to the party. What did I just listen to? This is the "Float On" band from high school? For real though, I had no idea Modest Mouse was this original. I love it. Any album/song suggestions for a new Modest Mouse fan? RIP Jeremiah.
If you like this you'd probably like Whale Song, Cowboy Dan, and most songs off of The Lonesome Crowded West, another good album is Good News For People Who Love Bad News, that's the album Float On is featured in, although the rest of the songs are very very different from Float On.
Thanks for the recommendations. I'll definitely check them out.
My guy, listen to sad sappy sucker. Tons of old recordings from Isaac on that one. It’s rough around the edges but some of the songs absolutely bang!
Cowboy Dan. Dramamine. 3rd planet
I saw this on TV, late at night, many years ago. Needless to say it kinda disturbed my for a long time. It wast until a few years ago that I saw the band perform live.
well that was scary, really and truelly horrifying
