What is The All-Time Best Episode of The Simpsons?

  • The Simpsons has been on television since 1989. At the time of writing there have been over 600 episodes. But what Episode can lay claim to being the best?
Essentially there really is no right answer but it's generally accepted that the best episodes are in the Golden Era of the Simpsons, i.e. between 1991's Stark Raving Dad and 97's The Principal and the Pauper. All the supposed greatest episodes are between these two landmarks; that said many claim that Season 11's Behind the Laughter and Season 19's Eternal Moonshire of the Simpson Mind are also worth your time.
What of the golden era best represents the classic Simpsons template. Which episode best captures its cutting satire, timeless pop cultural references and profound visual gags, or its quotability, impressive cast of characters and familial warmth? How do you quantify such a subjective thing as “best” especially with Simpson episodes? What makes one episode objectively better than another?

My favourite episode is 'And Maggie makes three' because while most great episodes succeed in being hilarious, that episode is both funny and sentimental. The ending scene when Homer covers up the sign where he works that says 'don't forget, you're here forever' with pictures of Maggie- which alters it to say 'do it for her' makes me emotional every single time.

People don’t even understand that. That’s exactly what makes the simpsons probably the greatest show of all time (in the early years). Was that not only was it unbelievably funny, and genius, but then the next second could have you tearing up. It’s such a shame what it has become nowadays. It’s absolutely unwatchable to anyone that remembers and grew with the golden years. I actually teared up on a much later episode though on the episode where homer loses his mother I think it’s called “Mona leaves-a”. When he finds her dead and they flash threw pictures of homer growing up with his mom. While Paul simons “mother and child reunion” plays. That’s such an incredible scene. Real emotional it’s crazy that a cartoon could play on emotions like that

monorail is brilliant, imaginative, absolutely bizarre, hilarious use of celebrity voice, so brimful of ideas that they could have put a thousand more jokes in the episode but they ran out of time, and works in any language (check out the spock cosmic ballet joke in different languages), and also had a great song.

My favourite episode is 'Lisa's Substitute'. I very rarely see it mentioned as one of the greats yet it has all the hallmarks of golden era Simpsons despite being pre-season 3. It's funny yet emotional and looks at Homer's failures as a father yet he doesn't realise he's failed Lisa, but ultimately his love for Lisa shines through in the end.

    Interesting Story:
One of my favorite episodes is "Kamp Krusty" which I actually got to see before it was even aired. My dad used to do Radio spots for FOX in the early 90s so he got copies of a lot of the episodes still being finished (some episodes with just the dialog and animation without music or sound-effects). So I got to watch a bunch of episodes from the 4th season and watched Kamp Krusty like 10 times. While my dad was writing spots for the other episodes, just for fun, I wrote a spot for "Kamp Krusty". I showed it him, he actually liked it and showed it to his boss, who ended up using it with some tweaks. So at age 7, I wrote the radio spot for "Kamp Krusty"! I never got paid for it, but it's a lot of fun to think back to that moment in time. So many of those moments like them trashing the school or Barney as Krusty I remember writing down the time-codes for to write up the script, and they're still funny as hell.

Yeah the Steamed Ham meme has kinda overshadowed that episodes originality imo.
But I loved it as a kid for the episode’s originality and overall premise and I liked a lot of the anthology or nonlinear or behind the scenes episodes like Behind the Laughter, 22 Short Films, Trilogy of Error, 138th episode spectacular, etc...so I’d already loved the episode and found so many moments memorable
And then after watching Pulp Fiction as a teen and understanding the references and going back to the cheeseburger chat, Herman the military guy locking up the Van Houten’s, etc there was so much packed in there pop culture wise that made it enjoyable.
Overall PF being one of my favourite movies adds to it as well. But yeah, great episode imo.

I feel like a hugely overlooked episode is I Love Lisa.
It wildly memorable, incredibly creative (A song about forgettable one term presidents in the middle of a silly childhood love story? Who does that?) And it is sweet and pays off in a hugely satisfying way. It is a pure episode and a perfect showcase of what Simpsons at their highest aspirations can be.

In my head monorail and last exit are the best ones- but even in saying this there’s so many that emotionally resonate with me. Usually Lisa and Homer episodes for my own relationship with my dad, episodes where Bart feels like a failure but proves otherwise reminds me of my brother and rewatching episodes I used to own on VHS feels magical and nostalgic even now as a 26 year old, who’s since lived out Lisa’s Wedding as an Englishman who married an American. But simpsons is always at its best when it gives you heart, satire and clever referential reverent humour. And the golden age is just chock full of that

I still love Homer at bat. When Homer is at the dinner table depressed about the major league players taking all the spots on the team, Bart calls Homer out reminding him that he would always say you to Bart that he can do anything if you put your mind to it and try hard. Homers tells him: "Now that your older I can tell you that's a CROCK, no matter how good you are at something there's always a MILLION people better than you" Bart responds: "Gotcha-can't win, don't try" I was only a kid when I heard that and it blew my mind that an adult (even a fictional animated character, or maybe ESPECIALLY an animated character) would say that to a child- it was the funniest thing I'd ever heard and remains up there to this day.

My favourites are, "The Joy of Sect" with the Movementarians, "Homerpalooza" because those were the bands my older cousins were into, so I wanted to sound "mature" to them, and the Hallowe'en special "Treehouse of Horror V" that had the Shinning episode, the time travel toaster, and the cannibal school cafeteria. But I think the most sentimental episode for me was "Summer of 4'2" where the Simpsons go on summer vacation to Flanders' beach house, and Lisa tries to become one of the cool kids. Being a dorky 8 year old at the time, I really identified with that episode, especially since we had just moved to a new city and I had no friends. So to see her try to reject her old self and try to fit in was really personal to me. And of course I loved the parting gift they left her at the end. "SWEET MERCIFUL CRAP! MY CAR!"

But i am surprised at the lack of attention for earlier episodes such as Simpson and Delilah, One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish, "Dead putting society" is an absolute classic... First "Treehouse of Horror" is gold, "Some Enchanted Evening", and "Krusty Gets Busted" "The Telltale Head" are great! It seems that a lot of my favourite episodes are between seasons 1-3... but it looks like not that many people share my point of view.
