  • Unboxing of M4 Lionsteel. Have seen a lot of positives about this knife. Wanted a long time ago to get a Lionsteel, takes a while to decide which model(M1 or M4) and what handle type to get. Finally got this one. The size and the price difference was the biggest factors.

    I like this knife. But for me personally, there are a few issues.
    The canvas Micarta is a little on the slippery side.
    It could use some jimping for the thumb.
    The sheath is nice, but the belt loop is very stiff. I operate a forklift, so I'm constantly climbing up and down all day. Or sitting in an office chair. The sheath is not made to wear while sitting.
    I cut off the strap with the snap. Taking my knife in and out of the sheath all day makes that strap a pain in the ass. Gets in the way. I'm not out in the bush. Works better without the strap.
    Most everybody would be perfectly happy with the edge as it is out of the box. For me it was too toothy and had a rough grind. The M390 is too hard to just strop away the grind marks. I put it on the KME and put a mirror polish on it. Now it's wicked sharp.
    I'm considering putting a convex edge on it. Anybody out there put a convex edge on their M4?

    • @jimsrat2346
      @jimsrat2346  2 роки тому

      Good to hear that you can go around with these issues you have as related to your kind of activities👌. Seems like you are an all handyman. The slippery micarta caught my attention as well but not yet sure how if it will be if used for a period of time.
      Give an update bro if and ever u give that M4 a convex grind. Thanks

    • @tamatoa8261

      @@jimsrat2346I finally decided to put a convex edge on it. Even though the original V edge was sharp, I wasn't happy with the way it was cutting. Now it's much sharper and cuts much better.
      The Micarta handle isn't as slippery as it was out of the box, since it's been getting some use. But it's still not very grippy. Hopefully it will get better with more use.

      Lionsteel M4 is not a hunting knife. Never use any kind of super stainless steel blade, for such tasks. It's the exact opposite steel, for such tasks. Always choose tough steels, with good edge stability, for hard use. The reason this knife ,comes with a steel, that would be better on a small folding knife ,rather on a hard use fixed blade, is just for marketing reasons. Most people, don't know muxh about knives, they just choose how good it looks. That's why many knives, are made with materials, that "sell" a lot and not with the material, they should have been made with.

      Thanks for the info/input sir. I think this will serve good as companion/back-up knife. For my case maybe i imagine using it cutting and peeling fruits(jackfruits, papaya etc.) occasional meat but never "hard use" etc with benefits of less maintenance.

As for where to get the cheaper side i cannot be certain of that especially on your side of the globe. I know DLT Trading could be cheapest among the "big" knife selling companies. My side got less options because we need to consider the "hassles" of importing knives due to country's restrictions so most likely just buy from local seller where "obligations" legalities etc are settled by the seller. Cold steel make very very well made knives and come very sharp.
    I own more cold steel knives than any other. I love my pocket bushman, cold steel knife. That knife will shave your arm hair just by the weight of the knife itself. And it will NOT BREAK, EVER!!!
    it's the way it's made. It has what's called a RAM LOCK mechanism. And the best part is that it only costs around $30 bucks. You simply cannot buy a more less expensive and better made knife from any other manufacturer.
