Hi. I play wheelchair tennis - any chance of some wheelchair pickleball advice and play with your friends on the other court?

Thanks for taking the time to write in with the question regarding tips for improving, and commanding play on a pickleball court from the seat of a wheelchair. I have never taught pickleball with individuals who play in a chair, but I do have experience with teaching wheelchair tennis. In addition, I did a internet search, out of my own curiosity, and to come up with some ideas for you. Below are a couple of threads leading to literature, and videos on the subject:

The big take away from when I did help with wheelchair tennis instruction, is the emphasis on getting comfortable and confident using the backhand, especially when it comes to the volley. Or I can explain it like this: If a shot is aimed at my body, and I take the volley on the forehand wing, I literally have to get out of the way of myself, to get into position for a forehand volley. On the other hand, I can be my lazy self, and not have to move my feet/ body much at all, if I take the volley on the backhand. Anatomically, I can easily cover the backhand wing and the body, with my backhand volley, and if needed, I can hit a pretty decent backhand volley on my forehand side; try doing that with your forehand, it is anatomically impossible! Relying on your backhand more often, will allow for split second reaction shots to be executed well, without having to move the chair first. This also applies to backhand ground stroke, as a paddle is shorter than a racquet, so the backhand is effective coming from your mid-section (as in ping pong), and does not have to be off to the side of your body and the chair.
      Cheers,
      Mark/TP

Thank you for asking. We had a wheelchair video on our project list but unfortunately the match schedule prevented us from getting the appropriate content. Hopefully we can get this out in the future. My best to you!
