I don't play much singles, but my success rate was transformed when I focused on disguising my passing shots. There's usually a way to use your feet to set up for one direction and then switch to the opposite side if you see your opponent starting to anticipate the shot direction. Maybe it's successful for me because I'm an older player whose opponents usually don't have the athleticism to cover all (or even 75%) of the court. Also, recognizing that there's a "chain-of-events" process, e.g. starting with a deep topspin serve to the body that requires a bit of extra footwork from the opponent, slowing up their approach to the net and opening up the angles a bit. At that point, it doesn't need much power - just a bit of accuracy to stroke the ball into the gap.
I use that change of direction shot to great effect against my 19 year old grandson. I am 63. When we first started, I could beat him at will. Two weeks ago he finally beat me 4 games to 3, and for the first time, every win was legitimate. We have been playing for 8 months. If I play ruthlessly, I think I can hold him off for another two or three months, but the kid has finally stopped trying to slam the thing on every shot. I have yet to play someone my age, but I think I would do well.
@@canucanoe2861 so fun! My youngest son, 24 yo and I am 61. He hasn’t beat me yet, but very soon. I play 4 days a week. He plays 1 time a month. lol! Must of felt good for your grandson to win!
I signed up for the singles event (plus doubles and mixed) at a big tournament here in Cleveland next weekend. I’ve never played singles (55+) but I figured Why Not!🤷🏻♀️ I'm watching this video so I know what I'm doing!😂
@@marcienjIt went well! There were 5 women in the 3.5 over 55 division. I beat one woman, scored 6 points on the gold medalist, 8 points on the silver medalist and 5 points my first time playing the woman who would win bronze. They didn’t like my crazy forehand slice!!! My singles DUPR is now a 3.55. All in all, a good experience for first time playing singles. Came in 4th in womens 3.5 over 55+ and won a SILVER in Mixed 3.5 over 55 - 18 teams from 5 states. Not too bad!!!
Thanks for this video, 99% of pickleball strategy tips are focused on doubles but I play singles more often so it’s interesting to see the differences. I like that it’s mostly the same but you just have to be more physical in the kitchen but you can be more flexible with passing shots.
This is a great video! As a former tennis player who has almost solely played doubles, I’m playing in my first singles tournament this coming weekend. I’ve found that actually practicing passing shots even in doubles will help your accuracy for straight side line shots since it’s harder to do in doubles
Loved this. Thanks so much. I am struggling when I go up if my opponent is former tennis and hits the ball down the line a lot. Of course we are seniors so maybe that matters? It feels like I should stay back to get them, maybe just more practice!
kind of a new player here, but in my experience, i generally throw hard shots near the edges just to keep them back/at the sides. this gives me a chance to move into the kitchen and minimize their shot opportunities. at the very least, i make them run more and tire them out more. as long as i dont let them set up in the middle of the kitchen, i'm in a good spot
Just starting pickle ball - I’m 60 and a decent wheelchair tennis player. I used to play table tennis pretty well decades ago - pickle ball is great for me as the balls and bat are lighter than tennis so easier on my hand and shoulder. I can move mostly well enough standing for doubles but we often end up two against one and the singles end is tough! I can really whizz a down the line pass and can mega side spin like table tennis. Pickleball is great for me!! By the way the wheelchair top spin backhand - reverse backhand - works really well for pickleball - give it a try… I’m enjoying your content - thanks.
I played singles this morning and realized I am much better at the angled passing shot than the down the line. I need to get more pace on my down the line shot, especially down the line backhand (working on it but it’s not there yet), but I tend to play with people who hang out at the baseline longer than they should (I think it’s a habit they developed in tennis) so the short angled shot, with or without pace, can get them sometimes if they aren’t that fast.
Best singles video out there! Thank you. One question-when I rush to the net, I always seem to get passed. I am small so I can’t reach that far to each side. How can I tell if I should over a little to one side or another to get to their shots? When I am in the middle I can’t seem to reach their shots.
Maybe there's a better answer, but my best guess would be watch their paddle direction before they make contact with the ball. Most of the time, that'll give you an extra split second to anticipate where they're going to hit it.
If my opponent rushes the kitchen I have no problem flopping one over their head. If they can make the return then their momentum is carrying them away and the next shot is a nice easy drop over the net. If you rush that kitchen line I’ll beat you every time.
I keep getting killed playing singles. Opponents just me around the court at will. Then I get discouraged and lose confidence, and the game's over pretty quickly. This video should help, hopefully.
My down the line backhand always swings wide - especially when the opponent is at the net... Maybe I am going for smaller margins. Any tips to rectify it ?
Lobbing is a bad strategy unless it’s very low level singles where opponents have poor mobility and power to hit strong overheads. The only time lobs payoff is to bail you out if it’s a shot on the move and you’re way out of position.
El oponente esta subiendo constantemente muy a un lado dejando mucho espacio para un passing. La funcion de subir a la red es cubrir el mayor rango posible pero si sube por un lado....el mismo oponente te esta diciendo donde debe ir tu bola

#1 down the line from either side, low, top spin
#2 slice low cross court, follow in
#3 drop shot, lose point, curse, go back to # 1 or 2

How did it go? I love singles but can’t find people 55 or 60+ to play much.

I love the full court examples. Keep it up!
I think the hardest passing shot for me is the down the line backhand. When I can get it in, it’s very effective
Needed this video- excellent content!

Great explanations on strategies and the mental approach.
Thanks!

This is a great video, one of your best. I needed this video. Thanks.
I really like down the line it's very effective for me
6:12-and they are the BEST!👌🔥💯
God bless ya, Mate. You are the best teacher on earth
Love your arrows and highlights on the court. Very helpful in getting your point across. Thank you.

Awesome video. Thanks for the overview of good singles strategy!

Awesome video as usual!!!
Glad you enjoyed!
Could y'all do a video on playing pickleball left handed for things like how to serve and more please
It’s literally everything reversed. Doubt they waste their time making this.
Great tips, yet I can serve and return deep when I advance to the nvz I loose a lot of shots fired down the outside line, any suggestions?
Yo it's lose not loose.
If my opponent rushes the kitchen I have no problem flopping one over their head. If they can make the return then their momentum is carrying them away and the next shot is a nice easy drop over the net. If you rush that kitchen line I’ll beat you every time.
I'm not so good with my lob shots, especially if I have the wind at my back. I think the lob shot is a lot tougher than people give it credit for.
change of pace by hitting it real hard directly at your opponent's right hip (if he's right handed), and only if used sparingly, and as a surprise
Just curious, what is your singles rating?
I keep getting killed playing singles. Opponents just me around the court at will. Then I get discouraged and lose confidence, and the game's over pretty quickly. This video should help, hopefully.
If your opponent is already up at the kitchen line, do you ever use an offensive lob?
What's the difference between the short angle pass and doubles-style drop shot? Seems like you're hitting them both low into the kitchen corner.
My down the line backhand always swings wide - especially when the opponent is at the net... Maybe I am going for smaller margins. Any tips to rectify it ?
Tennis player trying out pickleball here, how are lobs in singles?
weird question but if you swing a bat or golf club are you left or righty? i think i can tell by ur backhand that u are a lefty swinger
Down the line with topspin
On serve can your paddle cross the middle line?
Yes.
wish he would have covered lobbing in singles
Lobbing is a bad strategy unless it’s very low level singles where opponents have poor mobility and power to hit strong overheads. The only time lobs payoff is to bail you out if it’s a shot on the move and you’re way out of position.
Down the line and angle, and lobbing the player if he's quick to the net...
El oponente esta subiendo constantemente muy a un lado dejando mucho espacio para un passing. La funcion de subir a la red es cubrir el mayor rango posible pero si sube por un lado....el mismo oponente te esta diciendo donde debe ir tu bola
You forgot a passing shot. The lob.
It's called running around your BACKHAND not forehand.
How to serve *well

What does that mean lmao?
What program are you editing your videos in? I’m curious! And need a fun program to work with for my own videos ✨🫶
