I find it really sad that, probably halfway through the game, most of the roundtable becomes empty. They were all such great characters. Legends use to walk these halls.
Yeah, coincidentally I just thought the same yesterday. That and the manor. Basically every quest ends with the character helping someone and they either die, go mad or vanish
@@MrStatistx it's still an improvement over the dark souls games and bloodborne, almost every npc gets fucked in those. By comparison Elden Ring has a lot of triumphant/bittersweet endings: One gets his revenge and leaves a free man, two leave to make their own fate like children leaving the nest, three die, but they either complete their quest or go out on their own terms, and some just survive to the end or can be saved. Those numbers aren't bad for a game from this developer.
Most of them left no impression on me because they just disappeared between their introduction and the next time I entered the round table. Apart from Roderika, Fia and Hewg, I don't even remember their names. Pretty unlucky, since I doubt I'll ever return to the game.
i was fairly close to tearing up at this one. the round table was my home and safe haven through out my playthrough(with the exception of that one invasion) everyone was either dead/gone/dying by the time you reach the final boss. as soon as i talked to rodrika i stopped to look up if i had missed some kind of secret quest to save them

You cant save him. I tried, looked for clues in all the weapons and items. You cant save him. It's heartbreaking. At least Roderika, who started a coward, but became the only person to stay with him until the very end.
His first time talking about Roderika as his daughter and his last remark about how "man like him doesn't deserve a daughter". Damn. His relationship with her really reminds me of Godot and Erica from "Berserk". Though at least Godot had his happy ending as a one of the very few if not the only person shown in Berserk to die from the old age surrounded by people he considered family.
This is legitimately one of the saddest lines in the history of Souls games. Watching Hewg slowly lose himself and his purpose because of the actions of the character made me cry, and I'm not ashamed to say that.
It wasn't us that cause this. He was burdened with the task by Marika. If anything we brought him what he seeked as the weapon we beat the game with was likely smithed by him and we do indeed slay a god with it.
@@jonathannavarro6679 the game ends with us becoming an elden lord. My theory is hewgs will die if the roundtable disappear as the he is bound to it. So if you choose any ending apart from the Elden Lord ending, hewgs might die. He does not lose his purpose. His purpose is fulfilled. If not for us, the two that might have taken the throne were Vyke (who gave in to the Frenzied Flame, and would have destroyed everything) and Gideon (who, like Morgott, is dedicated to stopping anyone who tries)
@@lordofsandvich3630 I don't think Vyke would have been able to become Lord of Frenzied Flame as the player can. Almost every single character in this game made me almost cry when they got hurt emotionally or physically the lady In weeping peninsula is the reason I play punch out with misbegotten whenever I have trouble with a boss to ease my mind she is the reason I get back to fighting bosses as quick as I do and she only had something like five voice lines
I wanted to carry my master, my maiden, and my friends into the final boss. So without hesitation I walked in with a maxed out warhammer the travelers clothes, and momentos from my happiest moments in the game. I saw a god, the god saw me, and in that moment, our destinies collided, the God who had lost everything vs the tarnished who's allies while dead never left them. After emerging from the battle victorious, all I could say was "all this death and destruction, all this ruin, and for what? the gods may have betrayed us, but we shall usher in their ultimate demise" then i realized that going 30 hours without sleep is bad for your health and slept like a baby.

Weak Foe... Coward Dragon!
This actually broke my heart, He was the one I mostly interact with and I didn't see this coming. I joke around like telling him how I died everytime while I give my weapon an upgrade
Its weird how shaken his words are but his technique is flawless. He literally doesn’t even pause his smithing animation while dying. The sign of a true master crafter.
I really liked Hewg so I decided on my first ever completion of the game I would slay the final boss with only my maxed out Uchigatana. No power stancing no buffs or alternate ashes of war, just my katana and default skill. I slayed a god with your weapon Hewg.
Hewg calling me Lord is what made me turn away from the Frenzied Flame ending. I finished that dialogue, then spun the camera and looked at myself, eyes gleaming with malice, and thought "No. There has to be a better way."

Blacksmiths have a special place in my heart for every dark souls game. Andre, Vamos, the Giant blacksmith, Leingrast, McDuff, and even the Scupltor. All amazing characters that deserve better than what they got.
The fact he wished to call you My Lord is enough for me to say he earns the right to be up there with the likes of Siegward, Siegmyer, and Solaire as wholesome NPCs. Loyal to the end, even if he's lost his memories in the process. Edit: Yes, I forgot Blaidd, I know. I made this comment way late at night, so I wasn't thinking at my best.
That’s some really good voice acting, he sounded like he was actually struggling getting those words out, not as if he was doing it on purpose Bravo to the actor
Towards the end of the game I really felt hollow whenever I visited the roundtable. All the people gone, dead or dying with the place on fire and in ruins. Really made me question if becoming Elden Lord was worth it but certain things you can’t control. Certain consequences you can’t anticipate. Sometimes you lose a lot trying to achieve your biggest dream and especially when there’s people who’d give everything away for you.
Hewg's final words drive a spike through the heart man. But at the same time, it was like lighting a fire in you. Like hearing those words is all you needed to bang your head against the final boss to kill it.
Over 700 hours across multiple playthroughs, I check on Hewg religiously, we go fishing at least once a month, he is the godfather of my child, and I have never heard this dialogue.
This is one of those scenes where you don't know how much you are attached to a character until it plays out. It was written and executed with genius level precision. Like, Hewg is just kind of in the background as a utility character for countless hours. But subconsciously he's building a relationship with you. A relationship of trust, reliability, and necessity. His importance grows on multiple levels without you even realizing it. The importance of his utility in the game unknowingly manifests into emotional importance, slowly and over time. And you go to him for what seems like the millionth time and then, bam! It hits you with the feeling of loss of a deep-seeded bond. It's especially effective due to the mostly unemotional nature of most of the game, as well as the fact that it's not a loss due to death. It's a loss due to Hewg losing his mind and connection. Coupled with the fact that this whole time he was becoming your biggest fan, purely due to how you made him feel in his lowly state. This scene floored me much harder than I would have anticipated. It will go down as one of my favorite video game moments, because of the psychology that was put into it over the long-haul. I hope none of you see it prior to the game springing it on you when it's supposed to. Because that's how it shines the brightest.
The last time I talked to him when he was him, when i got this dialogue I upgraded my bloodhounds fang to max as a god slaying weapon, and u best bet hearing hewg ask us to slay a god with it was more motivation than i ever needed to carry that weapon to the end to kill elden beast.
I almost cried playing on launch day and seeing the poor lad winpper like that, I won't forget the words he told me, " I'm here to Smith a weapon that can kill a god" and he did... 😔

Hewg is honestly the best written smith in the series. Brilliantly written character with fantastic dialogue and backstory despite how little he actually does outside of his respective role as your smith.
"Allow me to call you this, just once, before it ends... My Lord, for that is what you are" That part right there when I saw this dialog really touched me... Poor master Hewg. I surely used your god slaying sword to slay a God!
I think Hewg has a special place in the Heart of everyone of us. He‘s a Character I always liked. He deserves better… Maybe the Devs will do some changes for NPC‘s like him. They will make additional Content I am absolutely sure. This will expand so many things. I hope some NPCs get better alternative endings. They are all very well written.
This is probably one of the most tragic story beats in the game and I was so sad to see him in such a mentally diminished state, Hewg is one of the most noble NPCs in the game
After you finish the game [spoilers ahead] and the world is literally coming apart, the Tree aflame... the Roundtable is burning and fading away, with such a sad music in the background... I could barely stand all that post-game desolation. :- ( I did what I had to and just went to NG+1.
This game is essentially just a more mature BOTW with much better and deeper combat, so yes they probably did take 1 look at this game and were like “yeah we need to redo this whole game if we want a slight chance of matching ER quality”.
I kinda hoped for Botw 2 to have a duo player characters. With either swapping between them or make Zelda and Link function a bit to how that one Prince of Persia game worked with the "prince" and the princess.
Just listened to this dialogue for the first time earlier tonight and it hit me hard. Most emotionally impactful interaction with a character I’ve seen in these games.
The ending cutscenes and dialogues for these NPC’s are some of the best From has ever done. Ranni’s final scene was absolutely amazing! Sellen’s fate, not quite so happy. But still so good!
You know, just for once it would be nice to have a character I grow attached to in a Miyazaki game not either die or go insane. Seeing everyone and everything I know literally burning down around me because of my actions makes it hard to feel proud about my achievements. I just end up feeling hollow. Pun not intended.
he comes off as so gentle hearted. im anxious to see what the lore miners dig up on hewg. he's gotta be one of the characters im interested in the most.
An absolutely tremendous performance. The (maybe ad-libbed?) additional stutters and extended consonants make this character feel immensely tired, broken, and pained. The softly-spoken "why does that girl weep for me" line stung.

@@MrStatistx Haha yepp. But yeah rannis quest too lol. That one was the saddest seeing Blaidd and Iji go
@@Slurpified I haven't even seen what happens to lji yet. I refuse to kill Blaidd.
@@MrStatistx it's still an improvement over the dark souls games and bloodborne, almost every npc gets fucked in those. By comparison Elden Ring has a lot of triumphant/bittersweet endings:
One gets his revenge and leaves a free man, two leave to make their own fate like children leaving the nest, three die, but they either complete their quest or go out on their own terms, and some just survive to the end or can be saved.
“I knew you’d be back” was one of the best lines I heard in this game.
i was fairly close to tearing up at this one. the round table was my home and safe haven through out my playthrough(with the exception of that one invasion) everyone was either dead/gone/dying by the time you reach the final boss.
as soon as i talked to rodrika i stopped to look up if i had missed some kind of secret quest to save them

Um did you not understand he was under a curse by Marika/radagon to serve at the roundtable for eternity? He loses his memories after awhile.
This is bcs the roundtable is created by the power of the grace from the ertwood tree, straying from the golden order would make these graces gone.
The description for his armour set states that he didn't take it off when he was embraced by the Three Fingers. As a result his armour was melted and instead of harbouring the Frenzied Flame, Vyke simply went insane.
Don't know how Miyazaki does it, less than 10 lines throughout the entire game. But still making players remember and care. Absolutely legendary
Due to how harsh and brutal the world is the moments you have friendly interactions feel more special to you
Almost every single character in this game made me almost cry when they got hurt emotionally or physically the lady In weeping peninsula is the reason I play punch out with misbegotten whenever I have trouble with a boss to ease my mind she is the reason I get back to fighting bosses as quick as I do and she only had something like five voice lines
He also pulls it directly from the manga berserk. Hewg and roderika parallel almost exactly like another character pair in the manga.
One of the few that didn't die but somehow managed to make me even sadder
Every npc in the game has a horrible ending except the turtle pope.

Thank you, the Ruins Greatsword +10 you made for me really did killed a god.
@@Smol_Eri really well written fellow tarnished
im in the proccess of maxing out the begginer long sword the lord smth longsword to slay a god with and so far its the only weapon i have ever used it has killed well over 40 bosses now and im getting closer by the day to getting his wish to come true. oh and its so powerful that i apporched a dragon and it killed itself rather than face me. Weak Foe... Coward Dragon!

I genuinely feel sad about what happened to him during my first playthrough
Even old lady two fingers lied to you.
This came so unexpected for me when it happened that I genuinely had to cry a little.
Its weird how shaken his words are but his technique is flawless. He literally doesn’t even pause his smithing animation while dying. The sign of a true master crafter.

Hewg calling me Lord is what made me turn away from the Frenzied Flame ending. I finished that dialogue, then spun the camera and looked at myself, eyes gleaming with malice, and thought "No. There has to be a better way."

Bravo to the actor
Towards the end of the game I really felt hollow whenever I visited the roundtable. All the people gone, dead or dying with the place on fire and in ruins. Really made me question if becoming Elden Lord was worth it but certain things you can’t control. Certain consequences you can’t anticipate. Sometimes you lose a lot trying to achieve your biggest dream and especially when there’s people who’d give everything away for you.
The voice actor did such a great job with this. It honestly broke my heart when I listened it in-game.
The voice acting is impeccable
It was at this moment i decided to kill everything that stood in my way to become elden lord. Because of this loveble BlackSmith. God i miss him.
the honor was all mine, master smith...
Hewg's final words drive a spike through the heart man. But at the same time, it was like lighting a fire in you. Like hearing those words is all you needed to bang your head against the final boss to kill it.
No other event or line of dialog in the game made me feel so hollow and cry as much as "I knew you'd be back" followed by this happening
Over 700 hours across multiple playthroughs, I check on Hewg religiously, we go fishing at least once a month, he is the godfather of my child, and I have never heard this dialogue.
Of all the NPCs in the game, hes prolly the one of the few who has one simple goal and helped the Tarnished the most.
Lucky enough to get this playthrough 1. And Miazaki has done it again, Be wary of tears in short Lord ahead *Points to Smith *
This gives me: “you come, we talk, i forge.” Flashbacks
James Doherty did an outstanding job delivering these lines
The last time I talked to him when he was him, when i got this dialogue I upgraded my bloodhounds fang to max as a god slaying weapon, and u best bet hearing hewg ask us to slay a god with it was more motivation than i ever needed to carry that weapon to the end to kill elden beast.
I almost cried playing on launch day and seeing the poor lad winpper like that, I won't forget the words he told me, " I'm here to Smith a weapon that can kill a god" and he did... 😔
As a person who went through a good chunk of the game not knowing a lick of lore and having no idea what was going on with most of the NPCs.......

Hewg is honestly the best written smith in the series. Brilliantly written character with fantastic dialogue and backstory despite how little he actually does outside of his respective role as your smith.
After my aunt passing with dementia this hold a somber feeling. An unfortunate end to one of the greatest npcs.

Gotta give props to the voice actor, absolutely superb work. Conveing an NPC in such deep way is not easy and boi was it done with such passion.

I think Hewg has a special place in the Heart of everyone of us. He‘s a Character I always liked.
He deserves better…
Maybe the Devs will do some changes for NPC‘s like him. They will make additional Content I am absolutely sure. This will expand so many things.
I hope some NPCs get better alternative endings.
They are all very well written.
this is almost word for word of godot's speech when guts returns.
This is probably one of the most tragic story beats in the game and I was so sad to see him in such a mentally diminished state, Hewg is one of the most noble NPCs in the game
Millicent: I am the best NPC in the game
Igon: no, I am the best NPC
Distant voice: amateurs
Igon: What was that, Punk?!

After you finish the game [spoilers ahead] and the world is literally coming apart, the Tree aflame... the Roundtable is burning and fading away, with such a sad music in the background... I could barely stand all that post-game desolation. :- ( I did what I had to and just went to NG+1.
Very loyal NPC, stayed with us to the end.
BOTW 2 has been delayed a year.
It better be because they heard the AMAZING voice acting in this game, and decided to amp it up a notch!
He's gonna make one of the saddest prepare to cry videos when Vaati gets around to it
also it seems to me he starts to smith slower (hammer hitting the anvil) the closer he get to losing his memory
master hewg and master iji two of the most respectable npcs imo
I love it when he says it’s smithin time
Just listened to this dialogue for the first time earlier tonight and it hit me hard.
Someone draw Hewg and Andre hanging out please, like comparing work or something
he comes off as so gentle hearted. im anxious to see what the lore miners dig up on hewg. he's gotta be one of the characters im interested in the most.
An absolutely tremendous performance. The (maybe ad-libbed?) additional stutters and extended consonants make this character feel immensely tired, broken, and pained. The softly-spoken "why does that girl weep for me" line stung.
Hewg is such an underrated character. Easily one of my favorite character dynamics in the entire FromSoft franchise
In the Golden Order ending assuming player does not loses their free will I like to imagine that our Tarnished goes to the reborn Blacksmith, kneels before him in thanks and sets him free.
I don't think we will, Godfrey doesn't lose it either or any other Elden Lord.
