3 Days in the Wilderness for Landscape Photography

- In this video I do some hiking, camping and landscape photography as I cross a 31 mile section of the PCT in Washington. I walk from White Pass to Chinook Pass with an aditional few miles added on to photograph Sourdough Gap. I manage to capture 5 images, 3 of which I am happy with. Spending a few days in the wilderness was refreshing and really helped with my creative process. It was time well spent and I encourage everybody to get out and hike even a couple of miles with their camera. I hope you enjoy this film.

3 years ago-ish, you said one of the most profound statements I ever heard re: photography: "A magnificent view does not necessarily make a great image". This video reminded me of that quote - which, incidentally, completely changed my thinking when traveling and "seeing" things.

Bought the calendar already. Love the fact that there aren't a million obnoxious ads in your videos, just nature and good photography (and squarespace, which isn't intrusive). If buying a calendar a year keeps it this way, I'm all for it.

Thomas, what an absolute treasure this series has been! It doesn't hurt that I was born and raised on both sides of the Cascades in Washington and hiked some of these same trails with my father and brothers. Such memories! We didn't have single serving spam though. had to carry the whole damn can. ;-) Didn't filter our water either. Just drank straight out of the creeks. Good old days, eh?

Hello Thomas.. have been watching you for quite some time, I'm an avid hiker .. nature lover! and nature and landscape photographer myself not quite to your level.. but love to see you in my part of the world and enjoying the BEAUTY OF THE PNW!!!!
Well Mr Heaton, for a man of many words (!) , I must say that you have captured some truly magnificent images. The kind that vastly deserve to be printed VERY LARGE. In this time of quarantine, it was nice to see this for the first time - to have a bit of escapism, so thank you for that.
.... NOTE: 1.5 servings is for the hiker who is doing the WHOLE PCT.... hiker hunger gets pretty serious by the time you get to Washington!!!! It would be easy to eat 2.5 servings of nice, warm eggs in the morning to start day 155 of a hike, trust me.....

You are so calming to watch. 41-minutes of relaxation.
Idea for you to lighten your pack more: grab yourself a camping tarp, and spend a bit of time learning how to set it up well. The reason I mention it is because I’m in the military, and spent the better part of a week recently under a tarp and I had a great time. I was surprisingly comfortable, adjusting airflow was very easy, and I was able to accessorize and modify the shelter to meet whatever new requirements I wanted. For example, by the end, I had it set up so that one side would open up to vent out during the day, I had a clothesline running right over top of it, holding my pants and my shirt for when I got out of bed, and I had wooden toggles attached so that everything could be very quickly buttoned up and detached without having to tie or untie more knots.
What you’ll need for this:
a camping tarp
A mosquito net
Sleeping pad
Sleeping bag, or blanket
A ground sheet only if the forest floor really bothers you
A bunch of paracord or other cordage. Ideally, the more you have, the better, especially while learning
A big beastly camping knife for carving tent pegs and other woodworking projects (and cutting your cordage)
You may also want a waterproof sleeping bag liner, but your new quilt seems like it should do.
Camping like this is a good learning experience that will help you to be (and feel) more self-confident, builds your competency and will lighten your pack since you won’t have to haul a tent with you.
Agreed, I never once backpacked with a tent. A tarp with my hiking poles or staff was all I ever needed and consistently was drier with that set up than anyone around me in a tent. also if bugs bad a very small net can be hung from the center line of the tarp and fit over upper half of body outside the seeping bag or quilt. No mater how light weight the tent is, this tarp set up will save over half a kilo. maybe a full kilo. Less material, fewer stakes and no poles needed. Also is much more flexible in terms of where you can fit in a place to sleep.

Yay light weight sleeping bags! They are a back saver, and so cozy. Love feathered friends.
So for my backcountry photo trips I take a Micro 4/3rds camera and 2 or 3 light lenses with an ultralight tripod designed for cell phones and light cameras. I am very interested in what you end up looking at!

To be fair, the hike alone would be worth it without any photography. It surely won't feel like you are just hiking to get a shot. It's more like you experience something amazing and then get some fantastic opportunities for photographs which you don't get anywhere else. =)
